  1. That game had it all. Monster dinger, back and forth scoring, maddening baserunning mistakes, great defensive plays, and a dramatic game-winning 9th inning 2-out home run. If you weren't entertained by that then you don't like baseball.
  2. That was one of the ugliest baserunning innings I have ever seen, and amazingly neither Carlos Gomez nor Jonathan Villar were involved. Would've been more appropriate if Shaw got thrown out at 3rd to end it.
  3. Always been curious about late games on getaway day...is there a rhyme or reason as to when home teams decide on a late start when one or both teams are leaving town right afterwards? My first reaction was that it seems very unclassy of the home team to have a late game when the Brewers need to get on a plane afterwards, but then I noticed the Classies are actually getting on a plane as well to get to Baltimore tomorrow.
  4. Point is simply that every Brewers fan wants to win, they aren't fearful of it. If anything the franchise's history makes us more starving than other fans for it. Many fans are fearful of giving up prospects that could help build a true top-5 NL playoff contending team in a couple years. But they are fearful of that because they want to win badly, and think 2-3 years down the line is a better target for it. This team could certainly make the playoffs this year, and another bullpen arm would help. I'd agree with many that I'm ok with trading some lower prospects for one if we are still contending. But I'd argue that even with another arm, the Cubs are still a better team and more likely to win the division, the Cardinals less so but still as likely as the Brewers, and the Brewers are already a ways out of the WC. So trade prospects for a shot at what many think would still be a less than likely division title, or keep them for a team in 2-3 years that will hopefully have more of a true top-5 NL talent base? I'd vote for the latter, but not because I'm afraid of winning.
  5. No one is fearful of winning, that's ridiculous. It's about planning and investing wisely. Many believe it better to plan and invest in the team 2-3 years down the line rather than sell some of the future to invest in this current team. It's all about which team you think is more likely to win. Nothing is for certain, this year or in the future. But most would say the odds of fielding a true contender are higher in a couple years than it is right now.
  6. There are few sets in all of professional sports that are worse than the Diamondbacks uniforms.
  7. Always amazed at how we can clearly see at home in seconds what a call is and it still takes an extra minute or two for the umps to come to a conclusion.
  8. I'll complain about instant replay as much as anyone, but automated balls and strikes just seems so logical. Takes a split second to determine and make the call, and gets it right without slowing the game down one bit. And can still have an ump back there calling out balls and strikes to preserve the tradition, he has to be there anyway for all the other calls at the plate
  9. Pleasantly surprised by the resurgence of our starting pitching, but save for 2 guys this bullpen is garbage.
  10. Also Domingo Santana started his career going 0-7 with 6 K's in his first 7 at bats. His one non-K he reached on an error. This really contributes nothing to this conversation...
  11. Ken Gerhart (1986), Sam Ewing (1973), and Lee Bales (1986) were all position players that went 0-4 with a Golden Sombrero in their MLB debuts. Don't know if it counts as a "debut," but looks like Ray Jarvis holds the record for most strikeouts in his MLB batting debut. He was a relief pitcher for the Red Sox in 1969, and in his 4th career appearance (0 ABs in his 1st 3 games) entered in relief after the starter Ken Brett only went 0.1 innings giving up 3 runs. At the plate Jarvis he went 0-5 with 5 K's, on the mound he went 8.2 IP with 1 ER and got the win. Side note: Davey Nelson was 1 for 5 with a GIDP that game. Oh boy I tell ya what.
  12. Since May 4th, Arcia is batting: .260/.311/.323/.644 He's looked better, but not exactly tearing the cover off the baseball. His average is over .300 over the past 15 games, though still not walking much nor hitting for power. Just throwing some stats out there as I agree - let him play, the kid's glove is special and think the bat will come around to at least be serviceable, which would be plenty given his defense.
  13. Hard not to love this as a 4th player in this trade. He may very well end up being nothing, but he may develop into an MLB player and/or nice trade chip. Love the way Stearns is building the farm system, and this is one of the many benefits. Less pressing need to go after "major league ready" talent with minimal upside, instead can afford the risk of buying low on young, higher-upside prospects. With a deep system including good talent at the top, he has the luxury of being patient and missing on some guys like this for the payoff of hitting on others.
  14. Don't get me wrong, that was a terrible play, but it was still followed by walk, single, walk, homerun. We lost because of terrible pitching.
  15. I feel like I should be really pissed, but I'm not. It's the Brewers, why should I expect anything different?
  16. This is on 1. Torres, obviously 2. Counsell. It's not like Torres is a closer/reliable. How you don't have someone else near ready when a crappy reliever has loaded the bases and walked a run in is inexcusable. I don't care who it was, Torres made it clear he didn't have it today, and he made that clear batter after batter while Counsell just watched.
  17. There you go - thanks for the research. Turns out with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs this year we are actually...really really good. People seem to assume you should score at least 1 run 95% of the time in that situation, but the actual norm is far from that. Would be curious how that compares to the rest of MLB, but I'd figure pretty favorably.
  18. This is what I'm curious of too. Stats with runners in scoring position likely generally parallels overall offensive production. Getting runners in from 3rd with less than two outs is a bit different. Or...maybe it's not?
  19. Any stats to support this? Always feels that way but I wonder how the numbers actually compare.
  20. I share the frustration, but this is the same team we were lauding for their great collective approach at the plate just a couple weeks ago. They are slumping, it happens, and it will get better. They are better than this and probably not as good as they were. Doesn't make it less frustrating, but such is baseball.
  21. Not saying they should've gone full teardown and trade everyone starting midway through 2012, but as Stearns is currently showing you can make moves to improve the MLB club while not spending money, draft picks, and ignoring the farm. It is certainly more difficult, but at least don't target guys that handcuff you for the future because they are at their peak market value a la Lohse and Garza.
  22. Fair enough - minor league pieces were traded away for 2011, which again I was ok with, but no concerted effort was made to restock the system for years thereafter when the writing was on the wall that the team was not the contender it once was, especially after a bad first half of 2012 and the Greinke trade. Instead they subsequently held on to pieces of value until that value was all but lost or trades were forced by free agency, spent money and draft picks on aging free agents, and largely ignored the minors to put together teams that weren't so much contenders as they were teams which many of us here would say "boy if everything breaks just right we might contend." After 2011, the Brewers spent 3+ years trying to compete in the majors at the expense of not bolstering the farm. After those 3 years, they had no playoff appearances to show for it, didn't finish higher than 3rd in the division, were clearly on the downtrend and started the next year 4-17, and had the 26th rated farm system out of 30 with just one top 100 prospect (Arcia). Call that a delay if you wish, I call that a pretty bad situation.
  23. This. There is nothing wrong with making a big trade to upgrade the MLB roster when the team is ready to compete for the playoffs/WS, and I was and still am all for the Sabbathia and Greinke trades. But after 2011 the Brewers were shortsighted and continued to sign aging free agents, trade off minor league players from an increasingly thin farm system, and refused to sell high on their MLB pieces (Gallardo, Ramirez), opting to play for now with a team that wasn't a real contender while largely ignoring the future. That ended in a predictably bad situation for the franchise that DS was brought in to fix. It's a tough balancing act, but you can build the MLB team while still planning for the future. DS has proven that to an extent already in his short time here. No, I don't think the Brewers can compete for the playoffs annually, very few MLB teams can. But if they are smart, they can have multiple-year windows to compete, while being at the constant ready to infuse the club with new talent from the farm and compete 1-2 years after a down year, a la the Rays, A's, and Twins of yesteryear. In the MLB, where truly any team that makes the playoffs can win the WS, the goal should be to sustain success and get to the playoffs as many times as possible over years, not necessarily build that one great team to "go for it" for one year. I have faith that is the plan for MA and DS.
