  1. the force is with you skywalker
  2. --------------------- As I said, it MAY be. Maybe there has been no improvement. Maybe the something different I point out is less coffee. What are you saying?
  3. Great summary. There does seem to be a little something different this year with ned, and as someone pointed out earlier, it may be the 'simmons effect'. (fixed code --1992)
  4. Part of the manager's job today does include off the field work, including game preparation, reviewing scouting reports for opponents, talking to the media, and more. talking to the media is a p.r. thing that is part of the job. This p.r. thing may have an effect on the entire organization. Yost has had some issues, and has had some good moments. This topic is for a mid-season grade, and since talking to the media is part of the job, it may indeed be part of the grade. Grade on a curve if you like. Or give talking to the media 10% of the overall grade...whatever. A winning manager can get away with a 'lukewarm' approach to the media. Losing he may not. Lets watch this unfold more as this season goes on. I am not a Yost supporter and I think his media response have kept his grades lower, for me a B- to C+ as stated earlier.
  5. ---------------------------- I agree with you here. This may be the big, unspoken secret this year. Ned may be influenced simply by his presence or by his advice or both. Great point.
  6. please add the ozzybourne family into the drawing. thanks
  7. i think this is accurate, and i believe i have seen yost do this at least one other time this year (if you believe he was trying to send a message to melvin). but please, please ned do not do this in a one run game, and put the team out of position to win. this is one reason why he does not grade out higher with the majority of the posters on this thread. (fixed code --1992)
  8. my wife wants to know why yost keeps a 2 out pitcher in for 2 outs plus hit-hit-hr-hit-hit before coming out. grade back to a solid average C. again, i think we need a B+ manager to get into and win in the playoffs.
  9. i have not been too active the last 6 weeks as the weather has gotten better--but i do look through these posts with some regularity. as we move towards the all star break, and the brewers are competing for a playoff spot with max interest and attendance, i wanted to find out about our opinions about ned yost at the halfway point of this season. i will say now, and have said, i am not a yost supporter, but he has done well so far this season. my opinion is that the team has stabilized after the following has occurred-- 1-the hall/hart lineup switch was stopped 2-the pitcher is hitting 9th 3-hardy hits 2nd 4-more players are less 'untouchable'. that is hall, weeks, cameron, and hardy all have some sort of competition/platooning. i do believe that players respond to a stable situation that is obvious to those players in the clubhouse. now, what has still not happened is ned yost has not lost his stubborness about certain pitchers. the history of turnbow/gagne/ and now mota is indescribable. the game tonight is another example of an unexcusable managing decision to use/keep mota in the game. overall i give yost a solid B-. but we need at least a B+ manager to get to and win in the playoffs. Edit: Prettified title.
  10. Pitching on the Olymic team proves he loves the spotlight? Then why would he have re-signed with the Brewers once already if Milwaukee wasn't a big enough spotlight for him? ---------- I was referring to the spotlight of the big games--like the World Series--not the spotlight of a big market. As for his initial resigning, well i dont know--but it certainly does not mean he'll resign again.
  11. Keep Ben for the rest of this year. I thought about a "hometown" discount, but Ben is a pro and close to Suppan--he knows players move around and make new friends on different teams--he will not give the crew a discount. With his history, I would not sign him if I'm DM. But here is the bottom line for Sheets--how badly does he want to taste the World Series? I believe he will go to the team that can do this for him, and the money will follow. Big Ben likes the spotlight (Olympic gold) and has been out of it for a long time. Maybe he is being nice to the Brewers in saying 'he will test the market', instead of saying 'I'll have a better chance of making the playoffs with a different team'.
  12. lets petition cox to retire and buy ned a plane ticket.
  13. thanks for the help casey. the gas pump in miller park is so out of place--i brought friends from the cities to a recent game and they thought the gas pump should dispense beer... ...miller park.... wierdest thing in MLB
  14. okay semantics--but it keeps track of HR"S so it is a bit more than an ad.
  15. the answer must be travis hafner
  16. how about an award for the dumbest promotion in MLB? my vote goes to the brewers and the "citgo gas station hr pump". not only does it look foolishly out of place inside miller park (esp with gas at $4+ gal), the whole chavez the ruthless dictator thing seems a bit offbeat to me--why are we supporting him? and people complain about the sausage races???
  17. as a 'yost must go' guy--this strategy of keepng mota in, not keeping cv in, and not putting cameron in for def reasons--wow. you can only see this for so long. it is easy to manage an 8-1 win, but this thinking of 'we win some, we lose some' and 'we are battling-this is baseball', is getting very old. lets play for tomorrow. and every game counts.
  18. ---------------------------------------- exactly. the cv move, giving mota some work is possibly understandable--but he was left in too long. but the lack of using cameron as a def replacement is the most puzzling. this is a classic yosty.
  19. jj--would not the position changes equal your definition of agreeable 'excuses' for bill hall? c'mon--after his great year at shortstop, and 2 years in a row of changing position, and now the platoon, dont you think he has a right to vent? and it was his agent that did the trade talk to TH. i'd like to see how long it would take for weeks or hardy or anyone to complain if they were in hall's situation. frankly i think hall has been rather stoic about the whole thing until now. jazzy-point taken about trade value. also the value would go up if he were actually playing. but then he would't ask for the trade. its catch-22.
  20. jazyy- you are right that outright trade demands, and players expressing their indignations to the press does not help team chemistry, but also may not hurt it. it is part of the game these days for players to be a bit more vocal--some questioned braun's recent remarks and as you point out, fielder's contract comments. overall i think that most of the players on the brewers (not branyan) sympathize with hall. and i feel that hall is getting a raw deal right now. he was starting to hit with some consistency a few games before branyan was called up--this is what may irk him the most. perhaps these comments by him may actually help him/brewers through this situation.
  21. agreed. insulting to hall not to do it. but would it be insulting to hardy if he did? hardy and weeks seem to be untouchable. if the crew is trying to shake it up a bit, i say play hall at ss or 2b as well as 3b. his bat will come around, then you can bench anyone of 3 players. (fixed code --1992)
  22. marc your 4 points are valid, and imo correct. and branyan/dillon could be a nightmare, hitchcockian in fact. to all the posters ready to hang hall out to dry, remember your battlecry about many postings on prince and weeks--the season is still early, it's only 33% over--dont give up on them. but throw hall to the wolves. well i think hall has been made to look bad on this years team by the DM signing of cameron and the below average play of hardy and weeks, and now he is the odd man out again. and if he is in a platoon, why not tell him he can play a little shortstop too. maybe competition is good for more than one position on the brewers. face it, hall has been ripped off by the brewers since their love affair with j.j. he was a natural at ss with 35 home runs, while hardy was hurt. how many ss have hit over 30 hr's since the 2006 season? or in the last 10 years? and with all the slumping, HALL STILL HAS 9 HR'S. good luck billy on your next club. there are some things this brewer organization just does not get. (pared back long quote --1992)
  23. the brewers will not trade the prince this year--especially with him having an off year and laporte/gamel a year away. they just wont get as much for him. i believe they will trade him after the '09 or '10 season, trying to break the bank for him to an A.L. team where he can play 1b/dh. but for prince's sake, and the brewers, i hope he gets this weight thing under control. then he could make a lot of $$$ doing one of those mike golic/dan marino weight watchers commercials.
  24. i believe you have hit a home run with this overweight viewpoint--although +50 lbs is probably too much. i was thinking 30-40 pounds. it also is quite obvious that his footwork around first base is a bit more clumsy this year--yo! when they traded the big o to open up first base for prince(ss), i was surprised that he actually looked pretty nimble in his fielding, especially scooping low throws--not now monty. this must be affecting his mechanics at the plate, as well as defensively. bottom line--until he gets in better shape physically, he will not reach his potential again. (pared back long quote --1992)
