  1. Hopefully that is the plan. Very rarely do the five starters that come out of spring training actually make it all the way through.
  2. "anyone know how he went from 16 saves and a good ERA in Texas to just getting lit up in Boston? " Being a closer and pitching in the inconsistent role Gagne did in Boston are very different. He also only threw 18 innings. Leave it to the national media to blow it way out of proportion.
  3. When everyone was available in August in September last year, Linebrink was the seventh inning man. This spring the main thing to determine is whether Turnbow can handle the eighth. If he can, a Turnbow/Gagne combo would be pretty nice- and pretty intimidating too. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif That would allow Riske to be a seventh inning role like Villy had last summer, which would suit him best. Then Torres can fill in the sixth inning and gives Ned a pretty quality guy to throw out there when the Brewers are down a run or two late. Shouse is the LOOGY, and two (or maybe three) of Mota, Parra, McClung (?), Vargas, Stetter, and the loser of the last rotation spot round out the bullpen. That's definitely not a bad bullpen.
  4. The (Joe) Winkelsas Warriors have joined League Brewerfan. That makes an even ten teams again.
  5. He also trotted out the "clogging up the bases" line... It's already been torn apart by Fire Joe Morgan.
  6. Just like Prince Fielder, except Prince's phrase is "You know"
  7. <------- Brian Shouse/Jesus
  8. I still think one of Cappy, Bush, or Vargas will be traded, with Vargas being the most likely to go. In addition, Villy will probably at least start the year in the rotation until Gallardo is ready to go. I wouldn't mind Vargas being the long man, though- he could be made into a good reliever; he throws hard, works slow, and is effective at getting out of jams. As far as Mota goes, I would be pretty disappointed if he was on the roster instead of Villy or Parra. If there's room for Villy and Mota, then it is a decent gamble that he would pitch effectively enough to justify the roster spot. Remember, Elmer Dessens was on the roster coming out of spring training last season. I agree with you about the Riske/Turnbow situation, although unfortunately I think Turnbow will start the season as the eighth inning man. In general, bullpens are volatile. The group of 7 that leaves spring training will not be the only seven that pitch from the pen all year.
  9. Actually its a Brian Shouse/Jesus combination, courtesy of the Unofficial Brian Shouse Fan Club. Some people with a little too much time on their hands photoshopped Shouse's head onto prominent historical figures. And brewers19- words cannot express my gratitude for finding the audio.
  10. Has anyone tracked down the archived audio?
  11. Will Jim Powell be in Arizona for the broadcast?
  12. Depends if President Russell Branyan can control inflation...
  13. According to The Official Site: So Vargas is the only one that doesn't have one. I'm surprised by that.
  14. I'm not exactly a seasoned veteran at Brewer backing, but I remember the glory days of 2004 and 2005. When I saw the news of Branyan signing, I definitely smiled. I realize how far this team has come when I look at things like this. In '05, the team went .500 and there were stars like Trent Durrington, Chris Magruder, and Russel B on the roster. That's not mentioning flamethrowers like Victor Santos, Julio Santana (who was good that year), and Justin Lehr. It's all the more mystifying to me how the Crew only went 2 games over last year in a weaker division than it was in '05.
  15. Counsell bunted three consecutive times, and I think he took at least one pitch in there as well. To argue that he was trying to use the element of surprise is a bit foolish. Counsell probably was trying to bunt for a hit, because a sacrifice wouldn't have helped matters much there- it would have put runners on second and third with two outs. The way I looked at that situation was: What is the best way to get the runner in from third? Yes, Kevin Mench was slumping then. But I still think that Mench had better odds of hitting a fly ball and getting a second run- one that would have changed the game, and maybe the season- than Counsell did bunting. That was a clueless decision, one of many that hurt the Brewers during the last month.
  16. That line is from the Journal-Sentinel article. In that game, Ned double-switched Counsell in as a defensive replacement. It was a great game; it went to extra innings and Corey Hart hit a solo homer to give the Brewers a lead in the tenth. Then, with one out, Counsell was up with runners at first and third. There were several righthanders available, including Kevin Mench, to go against Royce Ring. Ned stuck with Counsell and attempted to sacrifice the runner to second base. He fouled three straight bunt attempts and struck out. That's just another example of the incompetence I've seen at times. Even if he had to stick with Counsell, the decision to have him bunting with two strikes was ridiculous. To answer the question, 2007 should have been Ned's last shot. I hope he changes things this year, and I'll be rooting for him, but I'm not optimistic.
  17. Dave Bush 2007 ERA: 5.12 Chris Capuano 2007 ERA: 5.10 Not saying that that means everything, but I don't think Capuano should be discredited too much for the losing streak. If he had won that game against Harang where he went 8 innings and gave up 1 run (Balfour gave it up in extra innings) this wouldn't be an issue right now.
  18. I do think that Vargas could be made into a very good short reliever, but the Brewers don't have room for him in that role. If you made a scouting report of him, you could draw some conclusions: - He works very slowly - Gets out of jams - Only throws 3 pitches consistently - Doesn't work deep into games as a starter - Throws hard: 90-93 Unfortunately, that doesn't help out his trade value very much.
