  1. Odds are that Parra goes to AAA for awhile when Gallardo comes back, unless Bush is really struggling. Then he can be called up in case of an injury or if Villy would need a few starts at AAA, like last year. Suggesting Bush could be traded has no reason behind it. They'll need a minimum of six starters at all times. I think they're fine with Narveson as the #7, but Bush will be here all year.
  2. When Yo comes back, where do we go? - Keep Parra in rotation and watch his innings and maybe skip some starts, Bush (or CV) to the pen. -Parra to AAA to limit innings and have on call when needed -Parra to pen to limit innings I'm guessing that Parra and Villanueva will be starting wherever they are this year. So the logical conclusion would be to send Parra to AAA for awhile until someone is injured or Villy needs a break. That's probably how the crew will play it. Heck, even with the lack of pitching depth now, we could still find ourselves in a situation where a major league caliber pitcher is blocked at AAA.
  3. Now I will have to find somebody equally slow Yet another reason to love the Brewers this year. Every starter works pretty fast. No more Claudio "The Human Rain Delay" Vargas. Yes, there are ways this could have been handled better. But overall, I think the front office realized: He wasn't good enough to be in a contender's rotation He couldn't go to the minors He would be a good long man, but there are guys that could do what he could do just as well for less money, or (speculation) he told them he would rather be traded/released than start the year in the pen Given that, I'm awfully glad they didn't just bite the bullet and put him in the rotation. And considering that Ned said today that Narveson got some votes in their discussion about who should be in the opening day rotation, I think they have enough confidence in him to step into the rotation for a few starts if needed.
  4. It's kinda like yelling uncle that first series. Well, they'll be facing Lilly and Dempster against the Cubs. The Bush vs. Dempster advantage would go to us. How sweet will it be to have a series of Villy, Parra and Sheets?
  5. From a Brewers.com story just posted a little while ago: Narveson drew votes... I don't know what to say. I guess that means they have confidence in him as a possible fill-in, which is good, but that also means that there are some crazy people voting at these meetings.
  6. Nothing unexpected, however, following Ned's comments about having a veteran pitch the home opener I thought Bush and Villy would be flipped. Parra is in the 5 slot so he doesn't have to pitch as much, as was expected. 1. RHP Ben Sheets 2. RHP Jeff Suppan 3. RHP Dave Bush 4. RHP Carlos Villanueva 5. LHP Manny Parra The blog says the 4 starter is Vargas, and that isn't right. I expect it to be changed soon. EDIT: They fixed it now. Villanueva is listed as the fourth starter. http://blogs.jsonline.com/brewers/archive/2008/03/25/rotation-is-lined-up.aspx
  7. How many games did Rivera catch Yo and Parra? I can't be sure, but I'm guessing he caught Manny's perfect game at AAA last year. Unless he had that day off. He's obviously caught them more than Munson, of course. Regardless, he's about 31 now and if he's going to get a chance, now is the time.
  8. When Gallardo comes back, the most likely move is to ship out Parra to the minors for a few weeks and have him pitch very sparingly down there, keeping Bush in the rotation. Then, if someone is hurt or ineffective (or Carlos V needs a break like he did last year), Parra comes back and we don't have to worry about juggling the rotation all the time. I doubt Parra or Villy are in the pen at any point this year. They're either starting at AAA or in the majors.
  9. Watch the Cubs sign him and he'll throw a no-hitter against the Brewers sometime this season. He could throw about six no-hit innings, but his pitch count would be in the thousands. A no-hitter maybe, but with about 30 walks.
  10. ...from the Cub preview on SI.com. That Ted Lilly is sure powerful. First of all, his last name is Lilly. Second, I have never seen him top 90.
  11. The problem is that 3-ish mil is a lot for a long man in the pen, and I guess that's what he was going to be if he wasn't released.
  12. Quoting my own post here. They only owe him $900,000.
  13. http://blogs.jsonline.com/brewers/archive/2008/03/25/brewers-save-2-7-million-on-vargas.aspx Apparently they can save $2.7 million, to clear up the money issue.
  14. It's possible that Vargas refused to go to the bullpen. That, and the salary reasons, are the only reasons I can think of for this.
  15. With those comparisons, I was more just trying to go with guys that have gotten long-term, arbitration-buyout contracts that could be in line for Fielder, Braun, and Hart. It wouldn't make much sense to compare Fielder and Cabrera otherwise- Howard and Prince are almost identical players, but Howard hasn't gotten a long-term deal. So, to clarify, the deals those three got would be similar to what our guys are probably expecting.
  16. Alex Rios is apparently going to sign a six year, $65 million deal. He has two years of arbitration left. I think Corey Hart could get a similar contract in a few years, when he is in the same position as Rios. We're getting templates for contracts all over the place now. Fielder=Cabrera, Braun=Tulowitzki, Hart=Rios.
  17. (Nashville has 2 fewer days in April) Does that have something to do with daylight savings time and/or time zones? I thought that was February... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Anyway, Villanueva will be starting wherever he is this year. The thing is that he isn't perceived to have durability or innings issues like Parra does, so some think that he should be in Milwaukee's rotation all year, with Parra filling in for Gallardo until he returns and then sending Parra down to limit his innings for awhile. In that situation, Vargas is the long man in the pen and starter in case of emergency. This scenario, of course, would be dependent upon Seth McClung not being the long man, to bring it back to the issue at hand.
  18. You really can't do much better than Vargas in terms of a #6 or #7 SP. We can only hope that's how he's actually utilized. Exactly. It sure is nice to have him as an option. He has value to this club, just not as a full-time starter.
  19. The Brewers have never tried to put Vargas in the pen. We as fans think he's a candidate for long reliever. Vargas 2008 Games: 29 Starts: 23 McClung wouldn't bring much of/if anything. How about we trade him for that one guy who tore up AAA last year... what was his name... Grant Balfour?
  20. It come across like nobody here wants that guy to succeed. I don't think that's the case, it's more that people here realize his limitations. He doesn't hit for power, and hasn't proven that he can get on base consistently enough to warrant a starting position. To nitpick, I don't know about Stetter and Dillard. But overall, that's an interesting list.
  21. VINNY ROTTINO is hitting great and a great all around catcher with speed this guy is a gonna be the future hopefullly... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  22. Sanity! Good post Don. I like the idea. It wouldn't be the worst if they had Parra on a normal leash early and then sent him donw to the minors towards the middle of the year for awhile... but I think your idea is much better- there is less potential for problems.
  23. 3. Jenkins pulls a Daryle Ward and clobbers a sausage. First, that was pretty funny. Nice work. However, it was Randall Simon, not Ward. Just for the sake of factual correctness.
  24. The NL won't win the all star game so the Rays will be the home team. Oddly enough, I thought of that but went for the dramatic and predicted a "walk-off" ending. I didn't think anyone would bring up the fact that the NL never wins the All-Star game. Never again will I underestimate Brewerfan.net posters...
  25. You'll be getting Yosted? That happened to the Brewers last year, and I don't think it was a good thing... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
