  1. He waited about as long as possible to get rid of Hall. Should've happened earlier. It's the managers call on removing Gagne and Hoffman. And he also waited WAY too long to get rid of Suppan. So I would tend to think that he'll hold onto Gomez for too long as well.
  2. There's no way Gomez will be non-tendered. That would mean that Doug would be admitting his mistake. Won't happen. Especially with Roenicke as our manager now. He likes guys who can run.
  3. If we sign Hinske and Counsell, we might actually have our bench set already, like it or not. Hinske, Counsell, Dickerson, Gomez, Kottaras.
  4. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/110166619.html Looks like Doug put in an offer. Also has offers out to Counsell and Capuano.
  5. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/109982774.html Doug signs another off the scrap heap. This time out of the Yankees organization.
  6. If Prince and/or McGehee are traded, Hinske should only be signed in the event the Mat Gamel experiment fails. I'd rather Gamel get the playing time at either 3B if McGehee is traded or 1B/RF if Fielder is dealt. Anything else does a extreme disservice to the long term success of the team in my opinion. That's what I mean. If McGehee and Fielder are both traded, Gamel will play third. And if Gamel and Fielder are traded Hinske still plays 1B. So why would we not sign Hinske if Gamel is playing third?
  7. I wonder if Doug is looking to trade either Fielder AND Gamel, or Fielder AND McGehee, so he's looking at Hinske as a stop-gap at 1B.
  8. I think Hawkins can be good for us next year if he stays healthy. We could really use him as a consistent set-up man for Axford.
  9. It's obvious that the time to trade Fielder was last off-season. I know that Doug knew that just like we do, but I doubt that Mark A would've signed off on trading him at that time. No Doug is just stuck in a no-win situation here. People will be pissed if he trades Prince for anything less that a top starter, people will be pissed if he keeps him into the season, people will be pissed if he's traded for whatever Doug can get at the deadline, people will be pissed if we just let him walk and take the draft picks, and people will be pissed if we overpay to resign him as unlikely as that is to happen. There's really nothing Doug can do anymore in this situation. He might as well just take what he can get for Fielder right now and deal with the consequences.
  10. I don't think it would take 4 prospects, but it might take 3. I wouldn't be that upset if that was the case. I could deal with maybe Lawrie, Rogers, and someone else for him.
  11. Why does signing Weeks to an extension have anything to do with getting Greinke? I'd get him no matter what happens. We can find a 2B if we have to.
  12. I don't. This smells like a Suppan deal to me. He's fine as a 4 or 5 (at a lot less money and fewer years than he'll actually command), but if you're hoping for more than that then I fear you'll be disappointed The reason I have mixed feelings is because I don't know how long, or for how much, the contract will be for.
  13. I've got very mixed feelings about this. I think Pavano might end up being a better signing than Wolf, but still another signing like this isn't something we need right now. I'd rather pick up a younger starter with some upside, or go after a guy that comes cheap with little to no risk.
  14. Well, I know that, but then why is Melvin even talking to Fielder? I guess I can see trying to "go for it" by getting Greinke. However, I have to think that our chances of getting him are very slim. Especially, seeing as there are reports saying that we were on his no-trade list last year. Really I see no point in even thinking about keeping Fielder unless we get someone like Greinke. We won't be able to resign Fielder, and I really would rather get a return for him now than at the deadline. I just don't understand why Melvin would even think about keeping Fielder into the season at this point. The only time he should entertain that thought is if it gets more toward the season and he hasn't received any good offers for him yet. With Gonzalez likely off the market for now, I can definitely see some teams making good offers for Fielder.
  15. The thing that doesn't add up with all this is the fact that Melvin wants to get Fielder resigned. If he's planning on doing that just hypothetically speaking, there will be no money for any young pitcher that we might acquire, or any pitcher for that matter. So if he wants Greinke and to keep Fielder, the plan would have to be to let Fielder walk, and to me that doesn't seem like something he's content doing. So I just don't see why he won't just deal him now instead of messing around with what happens if he doesn't.
  16. If we decide to keep Fielder right now and don't even try to deal him or listen to offers, I think that's a mistake. Melvin would likely go hard after Greinke with prospects as everyone has mentioned, but I'm not so sure he'd succeed in doing that. If he doesn't, we'd then be sitting here to start the season with virtually the same team, and be completely screwed. Then we'd have to try to trade Fielder at the deadline anyway, and we'd have pretty much no leverage, so we likely wouldn't get as much as we want in return. If we were guaranteed to get Greinke, then I'm all for it. Since we aren't I think we're better off trading Fielder for pitching at this point, because we have no chance to resign him. Keeping Fielder will make no difference at all if we can't find any pitching. It just makes no sense to me really.
  17. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/108740909.html TH also reporting this, citing Heyman as a source. I sure hope they get this done ASAP.
  18. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/108740909.html TH mentions this at the bottom of this article. Good move to protect these guys from the Rule 5.
  19. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/108503184.html TH is now reporting this also. Says we also are in on De la Rosa. I don't really want either to be honest.
  20. Mlbtraderumors says that the Brewers are one of 5 teams interested in Francis.http://www.mlbtraderumors...ted-in-jeff-francis.html
  21. If Fielder reached an agreement on a contract extension with the Brewers I would be in complete shock. I just really don't see any way how that would happen. Based on past experiences with Melvin, the Brewers, and Boras, it just doesn't add up. I guess they must be talking though, because I don't see any other reason for them to be there. He only has one year left in arby, so I doubt there's anything to talk about there. Melvin does have to do his due diligence now though, because he needs to know whether or not he needs to get to work on trading Fielder at the Winter Meetings.
  22. I really don't see Doug just trading away our whole farm system for pitching, but I could see him trading a guy like Lawrie if he has to. No matter what the situation, I don't see Doug trading away too many prospects just for the sake of doing it.
  23. Yeah, all this really means is that Melvin isn't gonna go around from team-to-team shopping Fielder. He never said that he wouldn't deal him. He'll just sit back and let other teams make him offers, and if a good offer comes across he'll take it. This is just what I expected to begin with, so nothing new. If nothing good comes along, then he'll likely just hold onto Fielder until the deadline.
  24. Trading Lawrie, and possibly other prospects as well, is something Melvin may need to do to get the pitching we need. Mainly because we won't get a big return for Fielder or anyone else at this point.
