  1. McCarthy didn't see value in hanging on to a 27-year-old rookie as his developmental QB. I don't think this is true. I think they felt comfortable (MM & TT) with stashing Hill on the PS for a year and keeping 2 QBs as was their norm at the time. I think everyone was pretty shocked that Hill was claimed immediately. Frankly, Boyle makes me think of Hill (at least the ball he throws) with less of the scramble option. But I do think Boyle will be decent. He has a nice arm.
  2. I was wondering if this is Gard's swan song too. The team looks very undisciplined -- a key attribute of a Bo coached team. Gard just doesn't seem to be getting the most out of his players either. Frankly, I've never been a huge Happ fan. He is smooth and passes well, but the post offense is pretty dated. And that hack-a-happ is just too easy to succeed. He also hasn't really improved (much) in his college career. He is about the same player he was 2 years ago.
  3. I was actually hoping for Defillipo. He was shafted in MN. Plus, you combine two major offensive coaching chains...
  4. I wonder if Moore would actually make a decent slot guy. His cone and shuttle speeds were excellent but Pro Day 40 yd dash was just OK.
  5. Similar to 2009 when the Packers drafted Raji (9), Matthews (26) and Lang (109) with their first three picks. Followed by 2010 with Bulaga (23), Neal (56) and Burnett (71), not to mention Super Bowl star Starks (193). Granted, I don't remember Neal doing much his rookie year and Burnett tore his ACL.
  6. the struggle bus Pina was. Is that a typo or ??? I've never heard of a struggle bus. Is that a thing?
  7. And a few into more than just starters, but All Pro's. Bahktari continues to amaze me. I thought he was a nice surprising stopgap LT, not a franchise LT. Glad I was wrong. Sitton, Lang, both 4th rounders from small schools, Linsley a 5th. And while the OL hasn't look good relative to the past, given the restrictions on practice time has impacted the offensive line more than pretty much any other position. He was a rock, a guy who played here and coached here for 15 years. That's a major loss. And ironically, that was exactly what Campen was as a player too. Sad to see him go since he was a Packer guy, but not overly surprised
  8. It would need to be an obvious overpay for me to ship him out. Kratz was a nice story last year, but was being exposed at the end of the season. Grandall and Pina is a nice duo. Kratz is a good AAA backup.
  9. I think the point isn't slot=small. More that you need quicker (as opposed to fast) guys that can cut and change direction easily. Cobb was never fast, just shifty.
  10. FYI, I just read a Packerswire article that said something similar.
  11. And Wang promptly went to Taiwan and had a 4.26 ERA/1.48WHIP in the KBO league in this 26 yo season. More often than not those guys don't pan out. But occasionally you find gems.
  12. That is kind of funny that Greinke liked him. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for Grandal being Mr. Welcome Wagon. [sarcasm]Maybe this means we are planning on bringing Greinke back?[/sarcasm] Regardless, with a one year contract if that does become a problem we move on. Nice lease before buy option.
  13. Pitching is worth rolling the dice on, hoping to get a player turned around, especially in a rebuild. That's my point. Why go through all that and then just dump him? Seems kind of dumb from the Royals perspective. The only thing worse than making one mistake is holding on to it. They only traded away cash, so its not like they gave up a player. At 29 this year, KC obviously didn't see enough last year to bother.
  14. At minimum, it gives the Dodgers more leverage. I personally am hoping the Marlins end up holding Realmuto. I want them to get punished for their obscene asking price. And because then we can trade for him this next offseason when Grandal leaves. This was my first thought also. The Marlins don't need to trade him in the offseason. Although, I'm sure (despite being a catcher) that he will be a hot commodity a the 2019 trading deadline too.
  15. If we had hired McDaniels, I'd expect we start signing/drafting smaller WRs as that seems to be the Patriots MO. Anyone have an idea what LeFluer might be looking for? One concern that I had about hiring him was that he never was on one spot very long.
  16. As others have said, I think the main root cause was lack of talent. Great coaches can do nothing with holes on the team. That goes on TT. Whatever happened with him, his career as GM was certainly bipolar. Great early, horrible late. Capers and the rest of the coaches "lost" the team a couple years ago and his firing last year was long overdue. But then it was very evident that MM lost the team (at least by) this year. But his offensive approach was stale for a couple years. Like so many players, I'm guessing he is refreshed by starting new somewhere else. And I'd be surprised if he doesn't get another shot.y Similarly, I'd assume there will be a resurgence on the Packers simply by there being something new. LeFluer will need to ensure the team cohesion remains, but new coaches get a honeymoon period (generally) where people will follow just because he is new. I don't think the Packer's talent is all THAT lacking. Its just that the difference between winning and losing in the league is small and playing as a unit is critical. A ProBowl team of individuals will still lose. A key few FAs and another good draft will have us back on track as the most important part of a super bowl team is already here... the QB.
  17. Jennings has two problems with Packer fans: 1) He peaked well, but burnt out quickly*. 2) He left for the Vikings. Not only giving the feeling of being a traitor, but it was quite visible when he bombed there. *fact checked myself. He lasted longer than I remembered with five 1000+ yard seasons and two 900 yard seasons bookending those 5 years. But his drop-off with the Vikings was pretty stunning. And it was the Vikings...
  18. Looking at his peripherals, he wasn't all that good then either. ERA was nice, but BB rate and WHIP have always been high. Ironically, he improved BB and K rates the last two years, but has been hit harder, keeping his WHIP about the same.
  19. [sarcasm]So has Grandal ever played 2nd base?[/sarcasm]
  20. Clancy would've loved me as a senior in HS. My OBP was over 400. Too bad I couldn't hit a lick...
  21. Worst kept secret of the offseason: Ron Zook won't be retained...
  22. Yep. Walsh's field goal was only 27 yards, and missed it by 10 feet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HSvWf4R5DY Holder didn't put the laces out. [sarcasm]And the common thread? Michael Bennett played on defense both games![/sarcasm]
  23. Agreed. I'm sure PFF's ratings need refinement as 7th seems very high to me, but they are simply trying to normalize rating a position where there are no objective stats (sacks and hurries aren't always the fault of the OL). So normalizing at 2.5 seconds isn't perfect, but a way to measure everyone objectively. Frankly, I think Rodgers needs to do his OLine a favor and hit the RB open in the flat every now and then instead of dancing back there waving people around trying to get 20 yards when he needs 5. He should be watching Brees' film this offseason.
  24. My only caveat with Tennesse was that he had one year with a young QB and no real offensive tools to go with him.
  25. Except MM stopped being creative and lost his team (or at least the QB). I like the hire personally. I had him or McDaniels as my top favorite, but McD had me worried for some reason (probably a combo of Denver and Indy issues). I'm also happy to see Pettine retained. I think there is a better chance to bounce back next year with an established D concept.
