  1. Boy, I've not been paying attention... I was wondering why the Astros would want either of these pitchers. Then I saw they are in first place in their division. Nice turn around for that franchise. I knew they had a good young core, but I'm surprised to see them put it together so fast.
  2. Its always hard for someone to follow a very successful person in that same position. So it may be best for Gard to step into that role. Then if he flops, they can pursue Bennett. Better for Gard to continue what Bo started. And if he doesn't have the stuff, Bennett comes in as the one to make changes.
  3. How are Jordon or Monroe on picks, passing and other off the ball activities? Certainly we want to avoid the Anthony Mason "black-hole" type that couldn't do anything without the ball in his hands and if he got it, forget about getting it back. The center doesn't have to be excellent at scoring to help out the team offensively. If he crashes boards and moves well with the offense, that could be enough. There is only one ball. If you have great scorers, the best thing the others can do is to free them up to score.
  4. *Waves hand slowly in front of face* This isn't the thread you are looking for....
  5. I've also been very happy to see Lopez's progress this year. We all knew he was young and raw when he started, but after a mediocre year at A+ (where the air favors the pitcher), I was starting to lose faith to see him making it. So, both moving up a level and stepping up his production is very exciting. MLB: Peralta, Fiers, Nelson, Jungmann AAA: Cravy AA: Wagner, Lopez No one looks like a #1 SP, but a nice mix of #2-#5 SPs. Sign Zimmerman next year and we have a pretty decent and almost home-grown rotation.
  6. Rivera's recent emergence could add some interest to our future INF, but otherwise I don't see anyone else of impact (i.e. someone worthy of playing on a WS contender) in the AA/AAA levels. Sardinas and Gennett still look more like stop-gaps to me than above average starters. So perhaps Arcia/Rivera/Segura (wherever they play) might work. It would be an excellent D, light hitting 3B/SS/2B combination. Although, if they averaged 750 OPS, that probably wouldn't be too bad. Or perhaps we find a 3B another way (Perez/FA/trade). My only comment on trading Lind is that we aren't going anywhere under his current contract. I'd prefer to trade him now and build for the future. Lind won't be our 1B in 2 years when our "next wave" starts to come up. So why waste him now?
  7. I think this is more of interest in the coming years than this year specifically: Improvement: #1: Ramirez retires, someone other than Ryan Braun steps in #2: Bring up Arcia, Move Segura to 2B. #3: Lind is replaced (traded, contract expire, etc..). At 31, he doesn't have a long term place with the Brewers. Although, is Lind really part of the problem here? After one or two years, our INF is going to look very different naturally.
  8. Jungmann was having a horrible year, gets a chance to start for the Brewers and has pitched well at the MLB level. Then you have a guy like Nelson who was nothing short of dominant in AAA, but has been mediocre in MLB. That is where scouting balances pure numbers. If it was based purely on "numbers" Jungmann wouldn't have gotten a chance. Some people are effected by the light air more than others. His start in the MLB is a bit surprising, but nothing that happened in AAA this year changed my impression that he was a viable MLB SP. And if you watched Nelson's career, you'll note that he takes some time to adjust to the next level. So early struggles aren't all the unexpected. And seeing how all the Brewer SPs struggled at the early part of this year, I wonder if there is something more systemically wrong in the system (advanced scouting, game planning, etc..).
  9. [sarcasm]Ah, that's too bad. And I had high hopes for both of them[/sarcasm]
  10. I have an office in Turin that I try to visit once per year. But I'm not sure how that will work this year. Sunday, I'm headed to Germany and I would normally hit Turin also, but won't be this year because of circumstances. But I'll keep it in mind if I get there later this year!
  11. That was kind of my point. Brewer fans think it only happens to us. It happens to everyone. No, Brewer fans think that it happens TO us far more than it happens FOR us. Seems like our all-or-nothing hitting style needs an excellent scouting report to help drive the offense. So much so, that it seems like we are better off facing Kershaw than a rookie. Great to hear that Jungmann will get another start! Too bad that I'll be sitting in JFK at that time...
  12. Do you see him as a starting OF? I think most people that have followed his career saw starting potential in him. But it was more a question of if he could fulfill it. Most prospect lists are simply ranking the probability of hitting a ceiling. Reed's knock was that he wasn't quite good enough defensively to be an everyday starting CF and not quite enough power to be an everyday LF/RF; At least as "prototypes" go. But when it comes down to it, if you can have an OPS that is greater than 800 and strong defense to go with it, you can start as a LF/RF. His 800 OPS might come with a heavy OBP and light SLG, but it still good enough to start. In the past, Reed has done "ok" but not enough to break out of the "4th OFer" projection. He just needs to continue around this level of play to get his chance at the MLB level. And not pull a Hunter Morris...
  13. Perry said he will forgo playing for Florida State and enter the professional ranks. Negotiations for a signing bonus were still being worked out. Hmmm... its normally better for the negotiating if you reverse the order of those steps.
  14. [sarcasm]It helps build his draft record. "Well, we scouted and drafted X, Y and Z, but couldn't sign them. So our scouting is fine."[/sarcasm] Honestly, knowing that you can find Mike Fiers in round 25 and Mike Piazza in round 48 (yeah, a long shot, but they are there), why bother drafting someone you can't sign? Maybe the key is to simply draft everyone named, "Mike" after round 20.
  15. Hmmm.. I used to live right down there, but the name doesn't ring a bell.
  16. I don't understand rewarding him with a callup for continuing to not take pitches. I would expect that its more a point of circumstances than forcing his way in... Which mean his hold on the starting role would be rather tenuous and tied to his BA exclusively.
  17. He played shortstop and second base, and he isn't at all the power threat you'd think of as a third baseman. Everyone wants power at the corners, but that isn't a common as it used to be. If you can get a solid 750-800 OPS 3B at this point in the draft, you didn't do too bad. He sounds a bit like Tucker Neuhaus.
  18. Who is M Molitor? Now Paul Molitor, I'd take.
  19. FYI, everyone on the 40-man was "on the roster" during spring training. When they don't make the 25 man, they automatically use an option when sent to the minors.
  20. He didn't have Screech with him as a body guard did he? I heard that if they ever have a Saved by the Bell reunion, Screech's new nickname will be "Blade".
  21. Apparently Walters has touched 95mph Touching it is nice. Living there is better.
  22. Actually, Brantley was pretty highly respected. Not a top prospect, but peaked at #8 (when we had Lucroy. Lawrie, etc... ahead of him) I'm as happy as anyone to see Reed's improvements. I've been watching him a long time. But at the same time, Hunter Morris killed AA ball also and has done nothing else since. Don't be too quick to crown Reed, either.
