  1. I heard what Phillips had to say as well and he made it seem like Cleveland was waiting for Laporta to be offered to accept. It also sounded like Phillips didn't really know what he was talking about and was just saying something just to say something.
  2. I agree Peavey, I am just saying that if it doesn't work out nobody should be upset at Melvin for not making it work (not saying anyone is or would). IMO right now Cleveland is looking for someone to overpay and IMO that is not worth it.
  3. One of the rules in investing or in this case trading for a player is you can not get emotionally attached. That leads you to give up more than it is worth. If they do not want to give up CC for what we offered (what it is worth to us), than move on. All this means is we still have the pieces to either keep or use in the future for a different player who will be around longer.
  4. The more I think about this trade the more I think it might be better to hang onto Laporta and Green and use them to trade for someone in the offseason. I am all for trading them for pitching but I am not sure this is the best time. We really limit what we can do in the offseason if we get rid of both Laporta and Green as our prospect depth will not be there like it is now. Basically, here are the 2 options (not counting the option of just keeping everyone): 1. Get CC, make a playoff run and lose both Sheets and CC in the offseason. This results in a great shot at the world series this year but leaves us somewhat thin with prospects and our starting pitching for next year would be really shaky. 2. Trade Laporta, Green, or another top prospect in the offseason for a good young pitcher who will be around for 3+ years. Instead of going for CC bring in a guy like Maddux or a solid reliever this year for depth this year that will not cost us much. You still have a chance at the playoffs this year but the chances of really doing something this year really goes down. But with the added young pitcher we would get for Laporta in the offseason could somewhat replace Sheets. Then with the return of Yovanni next year we would still have a really good chance of doing well next year with Yovanni, Parra, and the pitcher we traded for at the top of the rotation. When the rest of the AA prospects come up in 2 years our offense would be loaded and we would then have a very good rotation as well as Jeffress may be ready then as well. I am not sure which option is better, but my point is this does not have to be "the year".
  5. The brewers better not give in and offer more. If someone offers more than Laporta and Green then more power to them. If nobody does and the Indians do not want what we are offering then let them keep CC. We will just save our guys to either play for the Brewers in the future or use as pieces for someone else in a trade that we would have longer.
  6. I feel like some of you are overrating LaPorta. Even though he is a top prospect he is not a sure thing, he is still a prospect. His power is already there, but if you put him in the majors right now he would probably bat around .240-.250 with pretty good power. Solid, but he still needs to improve to be an impact player. I am all for getting rid of him for the right price as he is blocked but once you get rid of him you no longer have that piece for future use. Laporta, Green and Cain could be valuable pieces in the offseason to get a real good young pitcher in the offseason to replace Sheets. Getting rid of these 3 guys gets rid of a lot of our depth and ability to do a big move like that in the offseason. Instead of using them on a great rental (Sabathia) you could use them on a good pitcher who will be around for awhile. Melvin has obviously weighed these options and feels this is a better opportunity. Having said all that, it would sure be great to have CC, Sheets and Parra at the top of our rotation to end the year. I see a lot of people talk about this being the opportunity to make the playoffs and that is why we should get him. That is true and it will help get us there but an additional big time value that I do not see talked about much is what he would do for our chances to make or win the world series after we are in the playoffs. Considering you only need 3 starting pitchers in the playoffs a starting rotation of Sheets, Sabathia, Parra/Suppan, Sheets, Sabathia, Parra/Suppan would be as good as any team would be able to put on the field. No team is going to want to go up against that.
