  1. You are comparing Rogers to Gallardo? A terrible comparison. Roger's showed his potential at the high school level. It is tough to project anyone until they play in AA. Gallardo dominated minor leagues and then for the most part has been great in the majors (his ERA going into this year was 3.02 in 134.1 innings). Even with that, Roger's hasn't worked because he has been injured. I realize trades like that are for the short term. Unless you are getting an absolute steal, I do not like that idea at all. Long term, the brewers are highly dependent on their farm system. IMO the value has to be ridiculous over 0.5 years for it to be worth losing 6+ years of good value. Just because a prospect is blocked, doesn't mean you should trade him for short term value...especially when the farm system is severely lacking pitching. That is my point.
  2. That is not true. We do not have many prospects that would be able to bring in a top young pitcher like the combo of Laporta/Brantley would have. Gamel would but IMO we need him to replace what we are going to lose from Fielder on offense. Escobar would bring a decent young pitcher but I am not sure we would want to trade him either. He is the only middle infield prospect close to the majors. It has been more than 2 starts for Yo, but you missed my point. The point is within reason Gallardo projects to be a top of the rotation pitcher. I would disagree it was one of the best trades in MLB history. Actually I completely disagree....but then again I am more of a long term thinker.
  3. Correct. Which is why I was disapointed that we traded some really nice prospects for 1/2 year of pitching. I know that 1/2 year was great but right now it is really limiting our options as far as being able to bring in another quality young arm long term. I think management looked at it as being Sheets last year so they needed to make a run...but what they failed to take into account is that Yovanni would replace Sheets and they would have just as good of team the following year.
  4. IMO if he keeps hitting like he is he will be up shortly after May 15th. If he plays as poorly defensively as Braun did after being called up than he will be moved to 1st baseman or RF. The thought of having Gamel, Braun and Fielder in the same lineup is pretty ridiculous. It is relatively easy to find a solid 1st baseman or right fielder so lets hope he can stick at 3rd. If not, I would not mind trading Fielder for some good young pitching. This team is in desperate need of it. It is to bad we used a really trading chip last year on 1/2 year of pitching. I know the pitching was great..but right now it is limiting our options.
  5. I agree his defense has not been close to acceptable. But I think if you are going to say there is no way he keeps hitting like he is I think it is also fair to say there is no way he will continue committing an error "every other game". Last year it was not close to that bad. Also, if he was hitting 1.000/1.000/4.000 this far into the season he would definetly be closer to being in the majors...maybe not at 3rd for the Brewers...but he would be closer to being in the majors. I know you were exadurating but in general you are just being negative.
  6. I would rather the brewers try to extend their contracts with a few of their younger players than to overpay for a free agent pitcher.
  7. Days like this make it really frustrating to be a brewer fan. It still annoys me so much that there is no salary cap. I have no clue how anyone could ever cheer for the Yankees. I am happy the Brewers didnt get him for that kind of money, it is just frustrating teams can buy players for such ridiculous amounts.
  8. So now the deal is done, what are we getting for draft picks?
  9. Technically, I think Melvin is right. The ability to score runs is the most important. It is difficult to score a lot of runs without a high OBP. So yes a high OBP is extremely important as well. You can have a high OBP but if you are as fast as Prince it doesn't mean quite as much as a leadoff hitter (yes, it is still important but does not mean quite as much if you have Ricky Henderson speed and baserunning skills). If your OBP is .015 lower but you are twice as fast and are a great baserunner, IMO that makes up for the OBP and makes you a better leadoff hitter.
  10. Can you show me a link or statistics that shows Rickie gets to far more balls than most 2nd baseman? Out of qualified 2nd baseman his zone rating is 9th out of 16. His range factor is also 9th out of 16. I am not an expert on those statistics by any means and I am not sure how accuratly STATS Inc. measures their typical "zone", but I am not seeing what you are talking about. If you are calling JJ's range terrible, than Rickies would be terrible as well because his zone rating is almost the exact same.
  11. And Salome and Gamels numbers in AA are way better than Fielders and Brauns in the majors. Any hitters numbers will be much better in AA. But yes, Brantleys numbers in AA are better than our 2 worst hitters on our major league team. I am not saying he is not good, he has a chance to be a good major league player, but at this point..he is still a prospect who may or may not improve enough to be a good major leaguer.
  12. Link? From what I remember when looking at minor league translations and other comments throughout the year Huntsville is not a pitchers park.
  13. Comparing Kendall and Counsell's major league numbers to Brantley's AA numbers in an extremely hitters friendly ball park will not tell you much. There were a lot of guys in AA that put up ridiculous numbers. Not all of them will turn out to be quality major league players. Also, there is a difference in running against AA catchers and pitchers and MLB catchers and pitchers. I realize Brantley had good numbers in AA, I am not sold he will in the MLB.
  14. I never said they would be, I was just trying to make a point that guys like that are not that hard to find and they do not have much value unless they have great speed or OBP ability.
  15. The Brewers already have 2 guys that do not strike out much, have more walks than K's, and have no power (Kendall and Counsell). Brantley does have good value if he has a BA around .300 and can steal 20 times a year in the majors, or somehow gets some power, but he is not a sure thing by any means.
  16. Think how amazing that rotation would be if Yo was 100% and Sheets was healthy.
  17. It is always easier to pitch through a little pain when it is a contract year and millions of dollars could be riding on being able to play. I expect him to come back. It amazes me how much a guy can get hurt, it really does.
  18. I can see why Corey would be frustrated but you can't take it to the media. I am an engineer and I hear complaints often during construction projects (that is part of life when dealing with people on a daily basis). In life, nomatter what you do, there are certain expectations people will hold (if they are fair or not it really doesnt matter). As a professional, you can't just be calling them out publically. You just can't do that and be successful long term. The guy makes a lot of money playing a sport. He is able to do it because of people paying to watch it. Essentially, the fans are his clients, and he just called them out. A lot of their expectations may be unreasonable, but deal with it and don't take it to the media.
  19. We have 40 guys on our roster now, I am sure someone knows how to sacrifice bunt.
  20. Well if the most 1 dimensional player in baseball history can't bunt then they should have brought someone in that can.
  21. I am not sure why that matters. If you are a majore league baseball player you should be able to bunt.
  22. We needed 1 run, not 2. He should have bunted in that situation.
  23. The problem with the estimates to begin with were people trying to be to exact. It is impossible to predict a players worth over 1/2 a season to a game or 2. The probability of his worth would have been better represented by something like this (I am making up the percentages, and am not going to get in an argument over how accurate the percentages are, but the probabilities were MUCH more spread out than the people saying "he is worth 1 to 2 wins"). -1 game - 3% 0 games - 5% 1 game -10% 2 games - 20% 3 games - 20% 4 games - 17% 5 games - 13% 6 games - 5% >7 games - 5%
  24. Assuming we would bring Gamel and Escobar up the middle of next year like we did Braun how much shorter will we have them locked in by bringing them up right now? 1 year? Also, assuming Salome wouldn't be starting until 2010, how much shorter will we have him locked in by bringing him up now? 1 or 2 years?
  25. No I am not implying he has gained 80 pounds since last year. He has probably gained about 10 to 20 pounds though. I am just saying that as an all around baseball player he is probably only slightly above average and I hope we do not put a lot of money into him long term...and a lot of that has to do with his weight. He probably played a little over his head last year on offense and struggled for a stretch this year...gaining 10-20 pounds might have hurt as well. His hitting ability is not really a concern to me. His all around ability as a baseball player is. His defense costs us a lot of runs each year and his slow base running leaves a lot of runs on the bases compared to a guy with average to above average speed. I just get frustrated watching a guy that has so much potential as an all around player limit himself to being 1 dimensional because he can't get in shape.
