  1. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/jon-heyman/20838908/top-40-free-agent-hit-list-projected--for-greinke-hamilton-bourn--37-more In Heyman's (I know, it's Heyman, but still timely fodder for discussion) Top 40 FA list article from this evening, he predicts Jackson gets 3/36. Close to what I was projecting. Greinke 6/150 Sanchez 5/70 Loshe 4/70
  2. Completely agree on Lohse, but with Greinke, Sanchez, & Jackson on the market, this actually seems like a stronger SP class to me than most seasons. You are right...I don't know why I keep saying thin/weak, teams do have some options. I guess because Cain and Hamels signed their extensions, and it took 2 more elite names off the FA market and that's why I keep saying thin market.
  3. Monty - TLB and I were talking about this very thing in a different thread. Full disclosure; I've always considered myself a Jackson fan...going back a few years, and was secretly hoping the Brewers made a play for him last summer. I think he's one of the most underrated pitchers in MLB. That said, I've often wondered why he has a problem sticking with one team, especially considering he's (well, at least I consider him to be) a top of the rotation type of pitcher. I've often wondered if he's bad in the room, or if there is some personality conflict. I found this article that was written back in Feb, after he signed on with the Nats, that tries to explore why he's bounced around. It's worth a look: http://mlb.sbnation.com/2012/2/3/2767775/edwin-jackson-washington-nationals-trades I would love to see the Brewers go after Jackson, although now that he doesn't cost a team its first rounder, I'm concerned that the price might be prohibitive. The highest I would go for Jackson would be 4/$60M. I think there's a good chance he could get 5 years from someone, though. I could certainly see the Yankees being interested, along with basically any club that misses out on Greinke (or doesn't want to meet his asking price in the first place). Jackson & Anibal Sanchez are pretty clearly the co-second-place SP on the market given their age, and the bidding could get crazy on them once Greinke is gone. Good stuff TLB. I am with you 100% on this one. And given the thin crop of quality FA SP, just like you said, I am afraid teams that lose out on Greinke are going to overspend for someone like Jackson.
  4. Greinke is far and away the best pitcher in this year's crop and will likely get a deal similar to Hamels extension 6/144. The Angels are going to go crazy to re-sign him. No chance the Brewers are going to get Greinke back. TLB - I wanted to ask you this last night...given the fact the Nats didn't QO Jackson...how do you feel about the Brewers now possibly making a play for him and what would you realistically offer?
  5. Yeah, Lohse is fool's gold in a weak FA year for SP. (IMO) Not saying Dempster is the way to go either. I honestly have no idea where these salaries are going to shake out. Just when you think you have a line on how the salaries will unfold, some crazy GM who is under pressure to make a move does something silly to throw it all out of whack...especially in thin FA years like this one, and especially with SP.
  6. I just checked twitter after I read your post. Adam Kilgore ‏@AdamKilgoreWP The Nats extended Adam LaRoche a qualifying offer, as @evandrellich first reported, and did not give one to Edwin Jackson. Expand Adam Kilgore ‏@AdamKilgoreWP I would expect that cuts the cord between Edwin Jackson and the Nats. If they don't want to give him 1/13.3, then they're not getting him. Expand Reply Retweet Favorite Well, that's step 1. Knocks that draft pick compensation wall down. Would be so psyched if the Brewers signed Jackson. Does 3/33 get it done? Does that deal make sense for the Brewers?
  7. So the Nats announced they QO'd LaRoche, but no news on Jackson either way. Cardinals QO Lohse.
  8. Yeah, the Yanks QO'd Kuroda this afternoon.
  9. So the Rangers QO'd Hamilton, which is no big surprise...so not only will his signing team have to give him a bloated and overpriced deal, they'll also have to surrender a top pick.
  10. Per Tom: Loe declines and becomes Free Agent Brewers claim RHP Arcenio Leon off waivers from Houston. 1B Travis Ishikawa out righted to Class AAA Nashville.
  11. I loved Nyjer's (brief) time with the Brewers. Getting to see him everyday and subsequently getting to "know" the real Nyjer Morgan, he was nothing like his reputation that preceded him. The ugly incident(s) in WSH and all the clubhouse stuff is well documented. I tried to explain to my friends how likable of a guy Morgan was and how much of a positive catalyst he was for the team's success in 2011. Thanks again Nyjer for the fun and for you honest contributions between the lines. I wish you well and continued success wherever you land. You made that 2011 playoff run a blast and the subsequent T Plush interviews were always so much fun. As an aside, although not politically correct (or sportsman like) to admit, I'll always enjoy you tossing your chew at Chris Carpenter and dropping the "Alberta" blast on Pujols.
  12. Yeah, not totally unexpected. Thanks Plush for the memories. You made it fun and we had a good time.
  13. From the transcript: On Alex Gonzalez possibly returning: “We’ve gotta make that decision yet. Alex is a free agent so he could test the market too. When it comes down to asking players, when you’re a free agent, he’s gonna want to know his playing time. How much time is he gonna play or do we view him as an extra guy and are we going with Segura. We have to answer that question. Jean is playing winter ball right now and is hitting almost .400 and he hit very well the month of September for us. We’re pretty high on (Segura) at this point. We can go with Jean Segura. We just want to make sure that is the right thing to do. Alex would love to return to us but it’s probably going to be about playing time. ‘Are we the right fit for him?’ And if you do bring Alex back, what impact does that have on Jean Segura? We haven’t made that final call yet. Right now we’re probably leaning toward Segura and just letting Jean do the job because we do think the resources are going to be needed for pitching.”
  14. Melvin specifically mentioned the SS position yesterday in his time with reporters and gave the sense they were going full time with Segura.
  15. Nice, thanks for the expansion on those blurbs BNowell. Good stuff.
  16. Guess these aren't for sale any longer? Did you receive my PM? Thanks
  17. Royals landed Santana: The Royals have acquired Ervin Santana from the Angels, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports (on Twitter). It's not yet clear what the Angels are obtaining in return for Santana. Read more at http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/10/royals-acquire-ervin-santana.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter#Qi8UXFZGFK1G6frr.99
  18. Some tidbits from Melvin via Brewer Nation: "There's a few names out there. We've talked about adding a starting pitcher. . Mentioned Edwin Jackson by name. "We need to add to our bullpen though, too." "I don't think that's going to happen." -Melvin when asked if there's any chance Greinke could return to the Brewers.
  19. I like your conservative approach in these offers. I definitely don't want to see the Brewers dealing away anyone like Peralta or Thornburg unless they're getting someone of Shields's caliber for more than two seasons. Is Hart+Gomez too slight an offer for Shields? I realize each guy only gives you one guaranteed season, but Hart would also net you a comp pick. That's not bad for two seasons of Shields... probably wouldn't be enough, but I don't think I'd want to move any young SPs right now unless it's the perfect deal. I worry about the bidding for Shields and honestly I feel like it could have the potential to get silly. GM's see the dependability with IP and Starts, and the improvement of SO/W, and fall in love. After Greinke and Sanchez are signed I can potentially see a GM that loses out making a panic trade and sending something silly to TB for Shields. In this context and in this vacuum (and I'm not using this as a platform to beat the Jackson drum again) I'd feel much more comfortable giving up that first round pick for Jackson than giving up a huge package for Shields and creating a different hole in the lineup. And, as TLB mentions above, I also worry about moving one of those young arms in a deal, especially when the return is only 2 seasons (or less) of a SP in return.
  20. Rosenthal had this column late last night about the Angels aggressively pushing Haren and Santana hard around the league, which is common knowledge, but the one interesting nugget I gleaned from the entire piece is how 'other teams are already in serious discussions involving trades for SP' EDIT: And for the record, I don't endorse Melvin going after either Haren or Santana (especially staying away from Santana), just posting for conversation sake regarding the quote below. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/Expect-Los-Angeles-Angels-to-make-trade-Ervin-Santana-Dan-Haren-103012
  21. Excellent post Nate, and outstanding breakdown of the pitching FA market. Great read. I know this is (re) stating the obvious, but those QO's are going to shape a lot of how this plays out. (IMO) To Monty's post above about adding a vet stop-gap type in the rotation - one guy I keep flip-flopping on in that spot is Joe Saunders. Part of me thinks he'd be a good vet stop-gap, but then part of me wonders if he's really that much of an upgrade over what we'd have in house.
  22. I'm with you Torts. I'm pretty jacked for the Hot Stove season. Very interested to see how Greinke's FA situation develops.
  23. I couldn't be more firmly entrenched on the side of NO when it comes to the Brewers signing Hamilton. It just has no basis in reality as the team currently stands. Aside from the reasons I previously mentioned, I also agree with the poster that said the agent is planting it with guys like Olney (who is a notorious shill for certain agents) just to get some buzz generated. I thought this was an interesting read, and sorry if already posted, I didn't see it: http://disciplesofuecker.com/josh-hamilton-brewers-rumor/7176
  24. It's an interesting facet of his career, no doubt about it. It could be something behind the scenes. But maybe it's just that he has the kind of arm & stuff that make scouts' eyes bug out, but ultimately his results are lg-avg. or lg-above-avg. In other words, enticing enough for teams to want, but 'meh' enough that teams don't wind up viewing him as a centerpiece. All great points. And also thanks again TLB, Logan and Monty for providing that CBA info and clearing up the picks situation. It makes complete sense. I don't know what player would be there at #17 but I'm sure (as mentioned) the pick in that slot is more valuable to the Brewers than surrendering it to sign a pitcher. The market is going to be inflated this offseason given the dearth of top of the rotation guys, and there's no way in [heck] I'd give up that pick for a guy like Kyle Lohse. No chance in fact. IMO, he is fool's gold and I've read various things over the years that he's not that great in the room (especially during his time in Philly). While I might still be inclined to think about it regarding Jackson, in the end I guess I am hanging onto that pick.
