  1. Too many unknowns about what happened when 2016 trade talks hit an impasse to have strong feelings either way. When I consider Braun these days, I merely hold out hope that he'll come through with a game winning hit in a key playoff game. There's too much pure hitting ability there not to think he'll go on some future tears. Hopefully he'll come through in some big moments.
  2. Not only is he tough to pick up out of the hand, he has two different grips on his fastball which make it react in very different ways. So while yes he threw 90 fastballs out of 98 pitches, those 90 fastballs were comprised of 2 different pitches. It's more than simply hiding the ball well, guys and gals. I am once again blown away by all the scouts here making predictions and determinations without knowing these things.
  3. Amazing how quickly people get high or down on players here. Saladino has one 2 hit day and I've already seen him propped up as a possible answer at 2B for 2018 in multiple places. Two weeks from now there is a high probability his numbers will have settled in around his career averages. This is a .232 career hitter with a .281 OBP and .610 OPS and a 4/1 K/BB ratio. Eric Sogard beats him in every category. Neither should ever be counted on or even be proposed as an answer. Let's pump the brakes on Tyler Saladino just a little bit.
  4. The system has been producing better pitching than it previously was. I'll take a system that produces major league arms over one that produces bats any day of the week. And obviously you'd love to see them churn out bats and arms for the "why not both" crowd.
  5. At the very least, the progression of Hader and Jeffress should allow Counsell to avoid stretches where Knebel is called on to close games 4 out 5 days like he did four times last year. And 3 consecutive days can probably be avoided as well. I wouldn't rule out Knebel in the 8th and Hader in the 9th some nights if the opponent is RH heavy in the 8th and LH heavy in the 9th. Granted, both those guys are pretty immune to splits, but every little advantage counts.
  6. This is such an amazing level of humility that it has to be pointed out and commended. Even though some of the ideas you were promoting haven't worked out as you expected, I've always found your comments to well thought out. It's funny because I've seen you defend yourself in response to posts I've made about bold statements and how they tend to backfire and you weren't even one of the 2-3 people I was referring to. Even when you've shared a critical "hot take" its usually accompanied by a caveat that you hope you're wrong. Not that my opinion means anything, but I think you're a good poster.
  7. It's possible Stearns didn't address 2B because it's a short term opening and stopgap options weren't any better than what they already have. Actually I'm damn near sure that's the case.
  8. Miley has to be added to the 40 man, doesn't he? If so, optioning Woodruff alone does nothing.
  9. All anyone is saying is that Stearns correctly didn't force a trade just because we have more starting caliber, everyday players than we can field at once on any given day. Some here were very loudly saying that not trading excess depth was a huge mistake. Our GM understands that it takes around 50 players to get through a season. Any yes, in a very direct sense, that IS "predicting injuries". Those of you saying he missed the boat this offseason by not shipping off excess depth and also by not breaking the bank for a free agent SP are clearly being proven wrong. Maybe next time those same people won't be so loud about it. Examples "we must sign Cobb", "we have to trade Santana for whatever we can get", "we can't waste roster spots on this many first baseman".
  10. I made it pretty clear what I expect. 8-9 wins and terrible defense. You're all over the place. Your most recent forecast called for a season similar to the 4-12 season they had with a healthy Favre. In a previous post you call for 9 wins at most. That's as clear as mud. Sorry I can sift through all of your hyperbole.
  11. Let me get this straight, you're expecting a 4-6 win type season from the Packers with a healthy Aaron Rodgers in 2018? My goodness
  12. The silence is deafening from those who inundated us with literally hundreds of posts how Stearns erred badly with "excess" depth and not breaking the bank for a starting pitcher. I don't want to go too far out on a limb here, but it sorta seems like the Brewers GM knows what he's doing.

  14. Are umpires told to stay away from players in those instances? It struck me as odd the way the catcher and umpire just ignored him as he lay there. They started towards him like they wanted to offer some comfort but then just shied away.
  15. It was Nedly who prompted the Russian Roulette analogy from me years ago. He would use 6 guys when it was apparent that 3 could have gotten them through 9 with the win. He'd inevitably bring in the guy who would implode at some point when it could have been avoided simply by sticking with the guys who were being effective.
  16. Love the 2 inning saves, and multiple inning relief appearances in general. I hope the Brewers are at the forefront of a new trend. Been advocating fewer is better for years even if it means a pitcher is completely unavailable the next day. It's like Russian Roulette. If you fire enough bullets you're bound to find the guy who doesn't have it that day (the bullet). If one guy comes in and is sharp, stick with him. Nothing worse than seeing a guy breeze through an inning and then trot out a new pitcher because of some fallacy that relievers are 1-inning guys. Getting through a game with 3 pitchers (SP, RP, RP) each going multiple innings is much better than using 5 or 6 and increasing the chances you find the one who isn't sharp. Yes it takes 1-2 RPs out of the picture for the next day but you still have 5-6 guys rested.
  17. I've been saying this for months now. It's why I wasn't worried that they didn't sign Cobb or Arrieta. They pretty much have to make a big multiplayer trade between now and December. And I'm sure they're targeting starting pitching.
  18. Nottingham could probably bat .400, throw out 50% of runners, and carry a 1.000 OPS and still get sent down once they have health at the position. Maybe he pairs with Pina once he's back and Bandy gets cut. But they're not cutting Vogt and Bandy. Because depth and all.
  19. I stated in multiple places that I didn't think he's a difference maker long before this start. Stated that directly to you in fact. Keep digging.
  20. No, my goodness. I'm saying those blanket statements are those the likes of which I made the comment you quoted and threw back at me just now. My comment on Cobb was nothing like those. I said it was not a good start (as in not a good start to his 2018 season) and how can that be argued. And how the heck can such a comment lump me in with the panic mongers and bridge jumpers we have around here. It's absurd. Getting back to Cobb, zero strikeouts IS concerning. Runs and hits don't look good, but everybody has days like those, even Kershaw. But no strikeouts is kinda eye opening in nearly 4 innings pitched. But heavens no, I'm not saying the guys is a BUM or will make Baltimore rue the day they signed him. I'm merely saying this start doesn't help those who thought he was a MUST ADD or the KEY to putting a playoff caliber rotation together. I just don't think he's a difference maker. Why that's so offensive or over the top to you is beyond me.
  21. Per McCalvy via Counsel, Yelich is improving but won't be activated tomorrow. They want to give the injury more rest.
  22. How the heck do you equate "zero strikeouts is concerning" to "this guy is a bust" or "waste of $80 million" or "we're going to regret not doing whatever it took to get this guy" or "we're not even trying in 2018 if we don't add this guy at that price"? Equating "zero strikeouts is concerning" to comments like those blanket conclusion drawing comments is such a reach it's beyond laughable. I take back my "good try" comment. This attempt is mighty weak. Seriously, take a look and think this through. You're beyond reaching.
  23. Don't believe I drew any conclusions. Do you see me calling Cobb a bust? Just said it wasn't a good start. Hard to argue with that. Good try though. In fact, I'll go so far as to say I think he'll wind up having an average year. It wouldn't surprise me at all if this winds up being his worst start in 2018. My stance on Cobb is (and has been) that it's no big deal we didn't get him. If you're going to invest, invest in difference makers, even at premium prices. I don't think Cobb is a difference maker. At least one person here clearly pegs Cobb as a difference maker, which to me is very odd.
  24. He has absolutely lost a step. He returned two punts for TDs his rookie year. I saw a highlight of one of them yesterday where multiple would be tacklers had an angle on him but he overcame the angle on sheer speed. He lost that speed long ago but make no mistake it was once there. Granted he played faster than he timed, but he's nowhere near what he once was. Yes, he could surely benefit from a more accurate passer throwing to him, but when he came out of college he was the total package not just a big target. Given that the missing element to the Packers receiving core is speed, I'm not sure how much of an upgrade he'd be over what we have. Adams, Cobb, and Graham bring the things Bryant now does at this stage in his career. He only makes sense if it's cheap imo.
