  1. I don't care for espn either, but people have been throwing tweets, blogs and fan polls out there in their attempt to paint Yuni as the worst player in all of baseball.
  2. Depends what you are looking at - heck when you look at a guys 15 year career, essentially one season is worthless. But for this season, right now, we are 25 games in - not to far off from a 1/4 of the way - and in my book, we can look at what guys have done thus far and evaluate their performance. At what point do you evaluate players performance for the current season?
  3. You'll get no arguments on the OBP or poor range - but can people stop with the worst mlb player comment? He hasn't even been the worst player on this team this season, let alone in the majors and I've yet to see a game where the loss could solely be pinned on him. (let's leave his past 3 seasons with the Royals and M's where they are - we are far enough into this season that we can talk about what players are doing this season) Is he playing above his head right now? Maybe, time will tell if reverts back to career norms defensively - but if he continues to play the way he has, there is no reason to replace him unless you can get a clear cut upgrade. (i.e. Furcal, Reyes, etc.) His bat has been on fire lately as well.......... hot enough to ignore any defensive deficiencies. One thing I really wish this team had is a good glove guy to come off the bench that could be used as a late inning defensive replacement - this is where I think your suggestion of Punto would have been a great fit.
  4. I get both your points, but it is more important to have high obp guys at the top of your lineup to get on base before your 3-4-5 hitters. If you have a low obp guy, having him before the pitcher spot hides it a little better - for lack of a better way of phrasing it. Yuni's had a number of productive outs from that spot in the lineup as well.
  5. Gomez has been pretty hot this past week - not may not be the best time to criticize RRR for having him in the 2 hole and with that said, if Morgan were healthy he'd probably be taking a good chunk of that playing time anyhow.
  6. Thanks strawboss - I'll look that play up. I'm really not trying to be ass or play devils advocate - I just haven't seen him play poorly enough that it warrants the uproar around here. Some people are acting if he is playing as poorly as Suppan did. The last comment is where my gripe really is - there just isn't any other option. I know I probably look like a fan of Yuni at this point, and as I said, I am pulling for the guy - but don't think for a second I wouldn't welcome an upgrade with open arms, I just don't see one out there and really, Yuni hasn't given me a reason to look for one. Furcal just make me nervous with his injury history, if they make a trade I'd rather see them go for a solid glove or go all in for Reyes.
  7. Yes, and before the hot streak he had one of the worst BABIP in all of mlb - he was extremely unlucky at the start of the season.
  8. He was billed as the worst shortstop in the game. No, he doesn't have great range - but he does have decent range (see last game in Phillies series - not every SS makes that play). His offense is coming around - 8 game hitting streak with 5 multi hit games.......... he's been pretty damn unlucky on babip. I'm more than happy to change my opine, I'm just tired of hearing about his UZR and what a few bloggers had to say about the guy. I'm not seeing the worst MLB player when I watch him play, I'm seeing a slightly below average defensive shortstop who puts up solid offensive numbers. The reason I asked for specific plays is because I'm trying to see what you guys claim to be seeing.............. if it's bad as some of you claim, surely it shouldn't be too difficult to point a few of these plays. I know he has poor range................ not denying that, but let's see some of these plays that most other SS's could make. I don't love Yuni, I'd love to see a better option out there - but there isn't one, it's why I've asked people what they would do and I've yet to hear anyone name a clear cut upgrade that could have been had.
  9. No they don't, fans hated Punto: http://letmegooglethatfor...q=Punto+Worst+MLB+Player Heck the guy has facebook pages and forums setup he is disliked so much.................
  10. Rob Neyer: Really, a tweet is what we are pulling into this now? Really??? Posnanski lists him in his personal top 10................ then says he isn't the worst in the article. Not to mention he even admits of making the gaffe of tagging vernon wells as the worst player the prior season............. not exactly a great track record. Keith Law is just a little blurb promo for his insider piece about how he might be the worst player. Yup, Posnanski again - that's the one where he tagged Vernon Wells as the worst player. Remind me again what Wells did the next season? I could also really care less about fans scouting reviews - after this thread, I've soured on fan reviews http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Sorry, none of this is concrete evidence that he is the worst mlb player or even the worst everyday player - nothing more than a few backhanded comments here and there on internet articles, the only viable ones are Posnanski and even he admits he doesn't have a good track record. I'm going off what Betancourt has done for the Brewers this season - and he's been a pleasent surprise. I've asked multiple times for specific plays so I could go rewatch on MLB.tv - nothing. I've asked the critics who was a better option that has played better than him this season - nothing.
  11. The ONLY thing Punto does better is take walks. Betancourt dominates him in pretty much every other area offensively. Punto strikes out twice as often, can't hit for power and I've got to ask - why do we take Mariners/Royals fans words in argument against Betancourt but ignore what Twins fans have said about Punto? Nick Punto gets quite a bit of love as the 'worst mlb player' as well, google it.
  12. Make that 5 multi hit games in his last 8 games - seriously, how can anyone be complaining about this guy based on the way he played for the Brewers so far this season?
  13. Named by who? A couple of bloggers who worship UZR? Pretty sure a Brewers relief pitcher was a hell of a lot worse last year than any SS in all of baseball.
  14. He still would have been behind Betancourt and Counsell - same boat we were just in, he refused assignment. Cardinals signed Punto Jan 21st - he was injured mid-late Feb; Brewers probably would have done everything they could to dump Betancourt had they signed anyone. Let me ask the critics this, has there been any option out there that has outplayed Betancourt to this point in the season that the Brewers could have obtained after the Greinke trade?
  15. I never saw us landing Greinke, so who knows what could happen. It might not take an elite prospect - that said, if Betancourt can continue to play the way he has, I don't see any reason to make a move. I'd rather ensure that there is a power bat on the bench and make sure the bullpen is all set. Furcal would just make me nervous, so many injuries..........
  16. How would adding yet another SS to the mlb roster cause Doug to keep Cruz? Cruz refused assignment, he wasn't staying unless he was on the MLB roster - adding yet another SS ahead of him in the organization probably wouldn't have sat well with him. Ignoring that fact, rather than roll with what we have now, you'd rather have Cruz, Betancourt, Counsell and Punto to man the position? Apparently, Doug was not only suppose to sign Punto, but also have the foresight to know he was going to need hernia surgery early in the season and keep Betancourt and Cruz for insurance.
  17. Yup, the level of baseless dislike for Betancourt is turning me into a fan as well - especially since he is playing well (which, I'll admit, is about league avg defense and an above avg. bat for a SS).
  18. Seems like his Yuni is starting to turn it around at the plate: 7 game hit streak - including 4 multi hit games during that stretch.
  19. Also worth noting Punto had sports hernia surgery and has missed most of the season thus far - meaning Counsell would have had to start at least 20 games or so to this point..... but it doesn't matter because any upgrade he has oven Yuni on D is given right back with his lack of offense.
  20. Punto is not an overall upgrade - he's clearly better with the glove, but it's a wash when you factor in the bat. Punto has K'ed nearly 20% of the time the past 2 seasons, hit 2 HR's and hit about .230................. not to mention he turn's 34 this year, won't be long and he'll start to lose that range.
  21. Janish is playing far more for Cincy then Renteria - and if your into the whole uzr thing, his uzr/150 right now is sitting at -46.5 for this season....... would be a big downgrade at ss and really nothing more than a name upgrade. Cabrera is playing 2b this season, not short and he also had negative uzr values last season when he did play SS - again, only upgrade here is the name. Punto would be an upgrade defensively but he isn't much of a hitter...... I would have liked him as a reserve over a guy like Kotsay, that's for sure. There isn't a clear cut upgrade out there after the Greinke trade......... I'd understand all the griping if there was or if Betancourt had actually played bad thus far, outside of having poor range can anyone really say that Betancourt has played poorly? For a guy being billed as the worst major leaguer coming into Mil., I was pretty darn worried myself - but really, he has been fine. Not great nor bad - middle of the road, which is fine considering it brought us Greinke. I'm not trying to be a smart ass, but can I get some specific examples of Betancourts terrible defense thus far? Just would like to go back and watch again on mlb.tv - maybe it'll change my opinion on his defense thus far this season, but it just hasn't seemed bad to me thus far.
  22. Absolutely any statistic should be taken with a grain of salt when it is a small sample size - do I think Yuni is going to continue to play better defense in 2011 then Brendan Ryan? Absolutely not, but my point was that you can twist numbers a lot of ways and can say almost anything you want with them. I can also pull out quotes from players/analysts/etc. that praiser Yuni - here is one from Dave Cameron (uss Mariner and Fangraphs): http://www.tangotiger.net...g/scout2006_winners.html In that article he praises Yuni's defense and even goes so far to call him the Cuban Cannon. Per wikipedia, in 2006 he was voted one of the best fielding shortstops in the game in 2006. Ex teammates have also had good things to say about Yuni............. I think UZR is useful and will be even more so in the future but it's drastically overvalued at this point. It's in its infancy and is still being modified....... All that said, I'm by no means a Yuni fan and I've probably come out of this looking like one - but going off what I've seen (rather than what some flawed defensive metrics have told me about Yuni's defense over the past few seasons) and I've been pretty darn pleased with Yuni. If he can continue to play like he has and the brewers don't reach the playoffs, it won't be because of him.
  23. In 2011, there are 10 MLB shortstops with a worse UZR so far this season - including the defensive wizard that many thought we should have signed, Brendan Ryan. People put way too much stock in UZR - granted, there isn't much else out there - but UZR definitely has its flaws and should not be held as gospel. Betancourt has not been bad defensively this season - he has been average. There has been nothing in Betancourt's play to warrant the response that he has gotten on these boards. Betancourt made 2 amazing plays in that phillies series - the dp and then in the final game, showed great range and made a great throw on a ball he between short and third........ yet it barely got a mention in here.
  24. Yuni played some great D in that Phillies series - outside of the ball he Roger Dorn'ed the first night, his play was about as good as it gets this past series. As for his offense, I love the fact he puts the ball in play most of the time and rarely K's - seen it produce a few runs already this season and it's refreshing to see that. Let's also not forget that this is Betancourt's first shot at a winner, guy has been playing on last place teams pretty much his entire career................. not trying to say that will make a player better, but I think Betancourt has shown he is capable of playing good D when he puts the effort in...... hopefully the potential to be part of a winning team will provide him some extra motivation. I don't think he is anyone's ideal fit for us at SS - but given the circumstances, Betancourt has exceeded my expectations so far and I expect guys like Braun, Fielder, etc. to push him if he does starts to dog it.
  25. Furcal may be retiring plus the guy is as fragile as they come - I think you'd have to keep Betancourt as insurance if you went with Furcal.
