  1. Time to try something else out there - we know what we have in Counsell, so I'd rather give a few unknown guys a shot and if all else fails platoon the two of them with Wilson also getting some time vs righties...... maybe trade for a has been prospect, something needs to be done at this point because Betancourt has been terrible at the plate. Even I can't find a silver lining at this point...........
  2. How much value does Beltran have with his bounceback season? I know he isn't what he used to be, but he does have some value - would the Brewers maybe have to give up less if they ate all of Beltran's contract in a deal for Reyes? Are Mark A's pockets that deep?
  3. I really want to agree with this - but the home/road split is just so glaring right now that it has me worried about this month. Things have to get better on the road though, don't they?
  4. I know I'm probably in the minority, but I'd rather leave Gamel alone right now - bringing him up for 24-30 AB's probably isn't going to make a difference anyhow. My guess is that we'll see Kotsay and possibly Hart DH with Morgan drawing some starts, not saying I like it but that's my guess on what Roenicke will do.
  5. 1 @ Reds 4 @ Marlins 3 v Mets 3 v Cardinals 4 @ Cubs 3 @ Red Sox 3 v Twins 3 v Rays 3 @ Yankees 12 Home / 15 Road Hopes are high after this home stand but that is a tough road schedule (Marlins have been flying under the radar a bit). My prediction: 14-13
  6. Didn't see this one coming - hopefully they can carry the momentum on the road trip. June is gonna be a tough month with trips to Boston and NY
  7. Curious if we will start to see more of what we saw last night in the Brewers game - i.e. catchers initiating and seeking out the contact.
  8. Is it me or does it seem like Nyjer plays every game like it's his last? The guy just always seems like he is giving it everything he has - really fun player to watch.
  9. Well, which is it?
  10. You can call him a stud when he does that at the MLB level - many Angels fans on other boards are already wanting at least a platoon with Branyan. Angels want to win now - Long term, without a doubt you take the younger version. However, as of right now he has a sub .300 OBP - Angels aren't going to let him work it out if that doesn't change fast.
  11. Trumbo a stud? http://www.fangraphs.com/...-as-a-full-time-starter/
  12. He could easily end up with the full time gig at 1B for the Angels - isn't Morales out for the season now?
  13. I like the soft platoon idea with Gomez possibly getting some additional PT late in games as a defensive replacement.
  14. The point is there is a difference, how about the fact wOBA doesn't take into account park factors, or speed in general (one reason why I specifically mentioned Braun and Ortiz earlier) - the stat has it's flaws. Brevity? Based on the length of some of the posts and the fact this has back and forth has been drawn out so long............... well, I'm sure you see what I'm driving at. Just a difference of opinion on evaluating players - I don't like using a single stat to compare 2 players under any circumstances unless I'm forced to. Also, just an FYI - fangraphs wOBA does not include rboe, I only mentioned this because you specifically mentioned rboe within woba.
  15. Option 2 - this team hasn't been healthy until recently and with Hart starting to show signs of life plus Greinke looking better each time out...... I like the chances of this team having more than 81 wins at the 150 mark.
  16. K rate was the tip of the iceberg - and it is not invalid, hardball times recently did an article about incorporating k rate into wOBA - besides that, there are other issues with wOBA. Don't get my wrong, overall it is a good tool when evaluating players but bottom line is wOBA is not all encompassing and I'll stick to my original point, there is no reason to use a single stat when comparing 2 players when we don't have to............. that's all I've really been trying to say.
  17. That sounds nice but trade what and for who? I'd love Reyes, but I just don't think the Brewers have the guns unless they want to completely drain what little is left in the farm. Reyes is a difference maker and will not come cheaply since the Mets could just sit on him and take the picks.
  18. I get it, your a big wOBA fan, but I'm pretty sure we aren't talking about wOBA anymore but rather the value of a K vs a ball in play for an out. Yes, from a past perspective you can look at stats that determine such things - but the problem is, too many people get caught up with these advanced statistics and forget the simple fundamentals. Putting the ball in play gives you a chance to score runs, regardless of the situation - striking out does not. Anyone good enough at math knows that you can get numbers to say pretty much whatever you want them to. On the bolded part: Does wOBA take into account productive outs? If the answer is no, then wOBA does not take into account every advantage a contact hitter has. Really at this point it's coming down to what you value you more - a high k/HR guy or low k/avg guy. Probably best to just agree to disagree at this point as we are probably never going to see eye to eye on this.
  19. Yes, but nothing good can come from a strike out, absolutely nothing. So when a guy strikes out 35% of the time (dunn), over 1 in 3 of his bats have absolutely zero value other than eating up pitches. Anything can happen when a batter puts a ball in play, even outs can have a positive value - Doesn't one of the sites have a stat for % of productive at bats?
  20. Looks like the door hit Cruz in the ass pretty hard on the way out - If there is truth to any of this, I'm guessing the Rangers aren't going to be pleased with him............. maybe he'll be a FA again soon?
  21. Looking back, I probably took you too literally at times but with that said, your the one that is trying to make the claim that Punto is as good as Betancourt offensively. You need to provide the proof that is the case, saying that they are equal because they have similar wOBA's is just cherry picking a stat to fit an argument in my honest opinion. We have vasts amounts of other data available to compare the 2 players, why do we need to limit the comparison to a single stat? Also, can I ask why you keep banging the Punto drum? The guy just got put on the DL for the 2nd time this season and hasn't exactly been effective when he is on the field................ and the last time he logged significant innings at SS, his advanced stats were good but not great. It would be one thing if he were outperforming him, and it might even be worth discussing if he were healthy - but 2 DL stints at a the 1/4 mark isn't a good sign and had he been signed to play SS, we would be in a far worse spot than we are now with Counsell manning the spot and whatever else we could find to back him up.
  22. Yes, because if I don't agree with your view point that Betancourt and Punto have equal value because they have similar wOBA's - then I must be misinterpreting something. Like I said, not worth my time anymore.
  23. Read the posts I was responding to rather than singling out one of my posts - might make more sense. Poster on the previous page made it seem like a given that Kotsay's projections were going to happen................ stated he was a bad OF because of his projections. Maybe I took him too literally.......... Let me be clear - I'm all for upgrades over Yuni and Kotsay, but where I differ with people is the level of badness that we are getting from said 2 players and what constitutes an actual upgrade. Some posters have labeled me as defending said players, no - I'm not defending them, I'm simply not agreeing with the type of thought process that leads to statements like 'nick punto is an upgrade over Yuni'. I'm done arguing this stuff as it keeps going in circles - probably best to just stay out of these threads and agree to disagree.
  24. Sit here and tell me you want to have an honest discussion and make a backhanded comment at the same time................. nice. I am familiar with the methodology in formulating wOBA and I'm not going to get into a debate on sabremetrics with you - people seriously overvalue them on this board - My whole point from the beginning was, it makes zero sense to compare 2 players offensive worth with one single statistic. I don't care what the stat is - unless there is a specific reason we can only use one stat, it makes no sense to unless you are trying to paint a specific picture (i.e. Punto is just as good offensively as Betancourt). Done with it at this point - I'm sure there are plenty of people that will jump at the chance to debate sabremetrics, I'm not one of them though.
  25. If all you said was they were below replacement level, we wouldn't have a problem. It's your constant ridiculous exaggerations and the constant straw men arguments........... for instance, I never said they were above replacement level yet you want to argue about that. Heck , I never even said they were good players. Really not worth my time anymore.
