  1. Yeah and he's been throwing in a 10 foot window for 20+ years. I'm not trying to turn this into an anti-McGehee thread or anything like that, I love the guy - but if people are going to nitpick and blame an entire loss on a throw by betancourt that was off the mark by inches and not even mention some of the other gaffes last night.......... seems like the only intent in a post like that is to bash Betancourt just because he is Betancourt and they have heard he isn't very good.
  2. Yup, Gomez making an out on the bases with Braun coming up........... Narvy walking in runs.............. Prince hesitating and making a bad throw (worse than Betancourts's) none of that matters. It's all Betancourt's fault............ If we want to be fair, it's on both of them - Betancourt's throw was a little off, however 99% of 1b make that catch. Prince also had a chance to make a playoff moments later that could have kept the game alive. McGehee has been worse in the field thus far and hasn't done squat with the bat and is suppose to be protecting prince.......... don't hear anyone calling for his head.
  3. Tried to delete it because I didn't want to get into it. Stats say Betancourt has played well defensively over 11 games - to suggest that those stats are invalid because it's only 11 games...... well, don't agree with it. Fine if you want to say that it's a small sample size and his prior history suggest he won't keep it up, but to suggest that the stats are inaccurate because it's a small sample size is wrong imo.
  4. Pretty sure fangraphs does not include defensive shift plays in it's stats - could be wrong on that, but I swore I read that somewhere in the past.
  5. It's either a Benz with a flat tire or a 78 Volvo (i.e. Suppan) with nice new tires that aren't broken in all the way yet but have the potential to be great tires.
  6. Per fangraphs Yuni is 2 runs above average in the runs saved dept. on defense this year.... obviously very limited statistics available thus far but his defense really hasn't been that bad, I think people are still going off what they heard rather than what they are seeing.
  7. Maybe after 08, but there was no way in heck that offer was on the table in 09
  8. This is the best summary I've read - but realistically, Betancourt is the best option out of the two at this point and as we sit right now, there are only 2 options:- Go with Betancourt, see if he can put up great offensive numbers and deal with his defense. - Go with a FA plus defender who offers little to no upside - I love 'em to death, but another Counsell type but maybe a bit better on defense..... that is pretty much are only option at this point. I'd rather wait until closer to June and see where a team like the Mets are - if they are out of it, Reyes will probably become available.
  9. Hardy has plummeted since 2008 - He had major value then (after hitting 50 HR over 2 season with solid avg/obp) and could have brought back some very, very nice talent, but it's easy to sit back and say that now. Did anyone really want to deal Hardy after 2008? I really don't understand the manlove with Hardy around here - don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed his play while he was here but he was terrible in 2008 and has done absolutely nothing since he has left that made me miss him. People need to realize that the 2011 version of JJ Hardy is not the same as the 2007-2008 version. Yuni has been solid - better than what I thought in the field and it's far, far too early to judge anything at the plate. For those that are into it, he has been above average defensively according to fan graphs. That said, I'll admit, I haven't been able to watch as much as I normally do at this point in the season but from what I've seen, It's been better than I expected as I anticipate his offensive numbers will come around.............. it sure seems like some are still judging him based on what they heard rather than what they see and are splitting hairs in their criticism.
  10. Obviously the ideal number would be 0 - but based on population, that number is fantastic compared to WI. Latest census had OC population at 3 million and the state of WI at about 5.5 million, yet WI had 208 fatalities in 2008 and that was by far the best year on record. Every other year in the decade was in 300's and was often in the 400's during the 1980's........... Annually, alcohol plays a role in about 50% of driving fatalities in WI, just sad when you think about it.
  11. RIP Nick CA is pretty strict on DUI laws, especially when compared to Wisconsin. Sadly, it takes something like this to get peoples attention and I fear that Wisconsin will never change until something similar happens in this state......... I don't want to start a debate, but I just don't get why this state refuses to make a change when it is such a huge problem here.
  12. I think their favorites to win the NL central - they won 77 games with one of the worst rotations in all of baseball and had Hoffmann and Hawkins blow 7 or 8 games early in the season. Assuming the Ax man keeps it up and Greinke and Marcum stay healthy, they should win 90+ games.
  13. I'm fine with Gomez in CF - as long as he continues to play good defense, I can live with him out there. SS on the other hand.............. hopefully we sign Renteria, don't like the idea of Betancourt out there every day.
  14. Escobar was the #12 prospect in all of baseball going into last season - a poor rookie season at the plate doesn't erase all his value.
  15. The rumor last week was that they were looking for middle infield and CF prospects in return for Greinke.
  16. Really hope this is true............. Greinke/Yo/Marcum/Wolf isn't too far behind Halladay/Lee/Oswalt/Hamels
  17. 2 of Lucroy/Escobar/Cain 1 of Braddock/Jeffress/Rogers Would hate to see Lucroy go, but we could see a Rivera/Kottaras platoon, Gomez in CF and maybe sign Renteria.
  18. Cleveland is apparently shopping him - sounds like it would be a cheaper alternative to greinke and possibly garza or shields. Contract: 2011: $6.1 million, 2012: $7 million club option, 2013: $9 million club option, 2014: $12 million club option, 2015: Free Agent
  19. I'd love either one of them - Shields numbers look bad at face value from last season, but he had a pretty unlucky BABIP of .354 - highest in the league, next highest was .340. (which coincidentally was Yovani) Lot of encouraging things to see when looking at his numbers (highest k rate of his career, averaged 1 MPH more on his fastball than any previous season) - only thing that really concerns me when looking at shields numbers is the spike in HR's.
  20. Garza isn't worth paying $17 million, giving up fielder and some of the remaining top prospects - I'm not sure I'd even do that trade straight up for Fielder with the Rays taking on his full salary. Not to mention, if you give up Fielder, it takes a huge bite out of the offense and thus the "go for it this year" feeling I'm starting to get from Melvin - it simply doesn't add up. If the Rays were going to trade for Fielder, it would have happened at the deadline last season when they needed an upgrade over Pena. If a trade is going to happen, I'd rather deal for Greinke and have the package centered around Escobar.
  21. That "logic" really makes no sense at all. The point of the original post was to give us an idea of what type of numbers we could expect from pavano - simple as that!!! I'm not saying pavano is going to win more games in the NL, I'm not saying he is going to give his team any better chance to win games than what he did for the twins last year - everyone else seems to understand what I am saying, but you seem intent on arguing it - it's simply an idea of what we can expect from him numbers wise next season. Adding to that: Since those numbers are a drastic improvement over what was here previously as a #3/#4 pitcher, it does improve the teams bottom line and chance to win. Yes, injury history, age and everything else should factor into a contract - those things should factor into the length, but I digress - performance is the ultimate deciding factor in determining if he is worth the risk. Pavano has performed well over the past 2 seasons and is worth the risk of a short term contract imo. Not gonna bother with the rest, agree to disagree. On another note, Melvin clearly has learned something since he has drawn the line in the sand at 2 years.
  22. I just don't see them being able to land Garza unless they part with 2 of the top 3 pitching prospects and gamel - I'd rather see them sign a guy to bridge the gap to the young guys. After Pavano, it looks pretty bleak on the FA market for SP's.
  23. I'd prefer Garza over Pavano - but I don't think he'll come cheaply. Outside of Gamel, what upper level hitting prospects do we have that would interest the Rays? I think the only way it could work with the Rays is if they wanted to bite on the Cain/Upton swap someone proposed in here to save money.
  24. I said regress slightly - if he pitches like last year without any regression (which would be a best case scenario) I think a fair estimation would be an ERA in the mid 3's - I think a projection of 4-4.25 ERA is in the middle of best/worst case scenario. At worst (other than injury) I would expect something similar to what soup gave us in the first year or two in his contract. (High 4's I believe) As for the Brewers defense - is there any site that has stats for team defense, I'd like to compare the Brewers/Twins to see how much difference is really there. I also don't think we should be avoiding pitchers based on that reasoning.
