  1. Once again people on here are over analyzing what RR said - I really think he is just trying to say that just because a guy has success at AAA, doesn't mean he will have success at the MLB level. Also, the decision to bring up Green would have to come from Melvin - not RR - shouldn't be pinned on him at all as he even alludes to the fact Doug makes the moves earlier in the interview. Reporter needs to step up and ask Doug Melvin why Taylor Green isn't up - not RR.
  2. Don't forget that they have Alvarez and Tabata coming back - those guys should provide a nice boost to the offense. I don't think they'll make the "all-in" move but I do see them shopping cheaply at the deadline and upgrading. They aren't going to away in a few weeks just because they have a few tough games (I'll again mention the 23-18 record against winning teams) - they've already won a series against PHI this year and PHI is probably playing their worst ball of the season now and as much as I hate to say it, this Pirates team can do something the Brewers can't: Win on the road.
  3. Plus, if memory serves, Lucroy only received limited playing time initially - he played well and thus earned the starting gig.
  4. Oh, and they are 23-18 against teams with a winning record - so the easy schedule thing goes out the window. Especially since that doesn't include a team like the Reds - who only have a losing record because the Pirates have owned them this year.
  5. They've also been without some key guys - Pedro Alveraz for a good portion of the year and Jose Tabata went down at the end of June. A number of people on here were saying they'd be in trouble after the break - well, they've won 4 out of 5 and are going for the sweep against the Reds today.
  6. Buster Posey and Neftali Feliz (2010 rookies and key members of each world series team) say hi. Rookies have had plenty of success in playoff runs and even the playoffs themselves - heck, you only need to look at Posey from last year to see how a rookie can not only perform during the middle of the race but have a huge impact on the race itself. There are plenty of other examples outside of Posey as well.
  7. I know you are talking in more general terms overall, but Lawrie at 3B would have been a longshot to stick - I'll admit I don't follow MiLB nearly as much as others, but from what I had read he wasn't exactly impressing at 2B. Melvin also traded for Marcum a few months before Rickie was locked up, the two moves didn't have anything to do with each other. Lawrie was expendable because he is projecting (again from what I've read) as a corner OF'er - for a guy who was drafted as a catcher with a power bat......... he loses a lot of value when he suddenly is an OF'er. Plus, the Brewers are set in the corners for years. Not to mention, I imagine the front office had a bit of concern when the kid they gave a check to, with six zeroes on it mind you, is duct taping 40oz bottles of malt liquor to his hand..............
  8. No, the Brewers can live with that bat at 3rd - heck they can deal with both those bats on the left side of the infield, IF - and I stress IF - they play good defense. Problem is, neither guy is producing like they were expected to at the plate. Too many people are hung up on what casey did over an 18 month stretch rather than looking at his entire body of work. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Betancourt is not the biggest problem in the infield right now. The sad thing is, there is an internal option at 3b - there isn't at ss - yet no move is being made. Green turns 25 this year - it's time to see if he can hack it in the big leagues....... if your not planning on giving him a shot soon - especially when he is producing at the level he is - what is the point of even having the guy in the system then.
  9. I agree - I think people are sleeping on the Pirates. Their pitching staff is due for regression, but if they make a big trade...... you never know.
  10. dlk9s post on the first page is pure gold...... sorry, I know these types of posts are frowned upon but that one really had me laughing out loud.
  11. The real head scratcher is that it took RR until July to get McGehee out of the 5 hole.
  12. For a guy that only has a 1.5 seasons of success at the MLB level, I'd say nearly 100 games is ample time. It's not like we are in May anymore folks - this isn't a knee jerk reaction. Some have been waiting for the floor to fall out on McGehee since 2009 - not because we don't like the guy, it's just that his minor league numbers indicated that his level of success at the MLB level was not going to sustainable.
  13. I think people are being overly critical of the pitching staff - Wolf has been absolutely exceptional. Yo has been a bit of a disappointment - but it's not like he has been bad. Marcum has also been great but did seem to slow down since the quick exit in Boston. The only disappointment has been Greinke - he's been solid outside of getting blown up in NY and Chi - but not dominant. Seems like he is a just a bit off from putting it all together though as his peripherals are pretty darn good. Narv dog is the narv dog - most teams would love to have him as their 5th starter. 6th starter (Estrada) has been better than a lot of teams regulars. I understand people are looking for a scapegoat for the Brewers not having a 5 game lead in the division at this point in the season, but the starting pitching shouldn't be anywhere close to that list.
  14. Rollins is on the downside of his career and I think he'll come with a pretty hefty price tag - they shouldn't have a problem finding a decent SS on the market this offseason if needed.
  15. I don't see why they wouldn't if they have the rights to - no way Boras would accept it.
  16. I'd also be interested in Mike Aviles - he can play SS and 3rd - having a down year at the plate but the guy can rake.
  17. A is not happening at this point - out best option was with the Mets and eating all of K-Rod's contract as a bargaining chip. B is where my money is, I have a feeling it will be Furcal in a similar type deal to K-Rod's - i.e. eating money, not giving up much in prospects. C/D would be fallbacks if Furcal's asking price is too high. Bigger question, what about 3b?
  18. All correct and in the most recent issue of SI, K-Rod is quoted as saying he doesn't mind being traded to be a setup man as long as it is a contending team.
  19. Not that surprising, but still great news - Boras wants K-Rod to be a FA and he just gave the Brewers the opportunity to use him however they see fit and thus maximize his clients value in the process. Will only increase K-Rod's value from here on out and now it looks like a lock the Brewers will get the comp picks unless there is some agreement within there that the Brewers do not offer Arby. Huge, huge win here for the Brewers - like Christmas in July.
  20. No, I don't know what would happen for sure - but Boras/K-Rod would have a darn good case: all they need to do is show the Brewers made the move to avoid paying his option next year. Going with a lesser player would do that. (and I'm not going to get drawn into a debate of Saito vs K-Rod) Point is, that there is risk there and it could go badly and leave the Brewers in a very tough spot financially next season - heck, what if Saito went down again in addition to Ax? You can't stop playing players to avoid paying bonus/option salaries and you can't avoid playing players at their natural position to avoid paying them a bonus. K-Rod is a closer, if there is no better option on the team and they continue to avoid using him in the closer role (again this would only be if Ax was hurt) he would have a very good case if it went to that. Personally, I think if it came to that - Boras would work out a buyout with the Brewers to cash in on K-Rod being a FA.
  21. Saito has K-Rod has 125 saves the past 4 seasons - Saito has 20, not to mention K-Rod is 12 years younger. Brewers would lose that grievance within 30 seconds, there is no doubt that K-Rod is the better closer today. Let's just hope Ax keeps up his production and stays healthy - then this trade is a huge win, especially if they can pull off the arby/picks. My only point was, is that it is a bigger risk than some people are giving it credit for and that's why the Brewers were able to get him on the cheap.
  22. I think you may be the only one. Casey has at least had two good offensive seasons for us to fall back on to pin hopes on a turnaround. Can we say that YuBet has ever had a "good" season?Casey is Yuni at 3B - except he is even worse this season. Above average offense and below average defense for the position - neither players have lived up to what we expected offensively this year. It's time to make a move at both spots, but imo 3b is more of a need considering McGehee bats in a far more critical spot in the lineup (where he shouldn't be - but that's for another topic). We don't have 2 full season for McGehee at the MLB level with success - we have one and maybe 2/3rds of another. We also have a lot more data of what he did in the minors previous to that and it suggest that 2009-2010 was an aberration and while Casey shouldn't be as bad as he is now, he probably is close to this type of player rather than what he gave us previously.
  23. $17.5 million reasons why they got him so cheap - Axford gets hurt, Brewers are basically on the hook for that contract next year. No way they can legitimately have anyone else close without that going to grievance. Fangraphs has a good write up on it, this could blow up in the Brewers face and leave them in a bad spot next season. Not many teams wanted/needed to take that risk.
  24. Furcal will be much cheaper, he's also more talented - although he is a bigger health risk...... but then again, JJ isn't exactly a sure thing health wise either. Honestly, I'd rather see 3B upgraded - even internally - before SS.
  25. We are not getting Beltran or Reyes or Wright - if we were, it would have been part of the K-Rod deal and we would have ate more salary to make up for the lack of a top prospect. Would have loved to see it, but I just can't picture it happening - eating more salary would have been very attractive to the Mets too.
