  1. I've been fascinated by Abreu since looking him up a few year ago: .399/.555/.822 in 89 games in 2009/2010. Hit .453/.597/.986 in 2010/2011 in 66 games. Those are MVP Baseball 2005 numbers! But, I don't think he's cut and dry that much better than Hamilton. It's sort of like the old Cabrera vs. Trout debate; Abreu is head and shoulders above Hamilton at the plate, but Hamilton does hold his own. Hamilton is exceptional on the bases and very good in the field at a premium position, while Abreu is a mediocre defender and baserunner at 1B. Add in Abreu's injury, and I think it's pretty reasonable to argue that Hamilton has provided similar value to his ball club this season. Back to the topic, I see three teams who've put themselves in striking range of the Brewers; odds are one of those three teams will put together a strong end of the season, and with the Braves/Nationals and Giants/Dodgers being the only two other wild-card threats, I'll be surprised if the NL Central doesn't capture at least one spot. Just looking at the playoff odds it looks like we should see a NL Central club in the play-in game.
  2. I'm not sure if Neuer was yelling at Ozil for failing to finish, or for trying to finish in that situation. Normally I'd welcome an 8th goal, but that just seems a bit cruel on Brazil's home turf.
  3. Brazil were just awful. Germany ought to just clear out there bench at this point.
  4. Rumor is that Yedlin is on a delayed transfer to Roma. He'll apparently finish the year with Seattle but then may move over there.
  5. Really unfortunate to see James Rodriguez and Neymar both bow out of the tournament. Hopefully Neymar is okay long-term, I don't know what the implications of a broken vertebra are, but it doesn't sound too good. It looks like Colombia should at least get one more four-year cycle out of most of this group of players; Rodriguez will be fun to watch over the next few years and especially in 2018. There's nothing that can be said about the U.S. tournament that hasn't already been said. As far as the future goes, I'm curious to see how much European interest there will be for guys like DeAndre Yedlin and Matt Besler. I'm hoping Julian Green finds a good spot to develop; he's probably graduated from Bayern's reserves but he won't touch the field with the first team, so perhaps a loan is in order to another Bundesliga club. Gedion Zelalem would be a great addition for the USMNT, so it will be interesting to see if he turns out.
  6. Does Segura have an option remaining? At this point I just wonder if sending him down for 10 days to work on his approach is a reasonable option. He's struggling so much that at this point Bianchi isn't even a major offensive downgrade.
  7. .239/.271/.326/.597 I wonder how long this continues before the Brewers' front office starts to seriously question Segura's value over the next few years. Over the last calendar year, Segura is dead last in MLB with a wRC+ of 65 and a wOBA of .269 (500+ PA's needed to qualify). Just looked up Orlando Arcia and he's started to hit a bit; now boasting a .278/.333/.405 slash line in A+ (wRC+ = 114). Probably still looking at 2016 at the earliest though...
  8. Lucroy getting some love from ESPN for his pitch framing. http://espn.go.com/espn/feature/story/_/id/11127248/how-catcher-framing-becoming-great-skill-smart-teams-new-york-yankees-espn-magazine (Also, some of their new web design is horrible. I don't need to read your articles in size 84 font with bright lights and colors.)
  9. Gennett has faced LHP in about 15% of his PA's. Not sure what league average is, but Braun has faced LHP about 25% of the time for comparison. So even if Gennett truly is this bad (.350 OPS) against LHP, I don't think his numbers would look miserably worse if he didn't have this large of a platoon advantage. Perhaps we're looking at a .290/.320/.460 player if he'd faced LHP...still a very solid line from a 2B in this day and age. It's probably not enough to get him into the ASG over the likes of Utley, Gordon, Murphy, or Altuve, but regardless of his platoon bias, he's had a very solid year.
  10. USA! USA! USA? Yup, beers at 12:00 mean nothing's getting done today. Belgium is a pretty good draw for the knockout stage, all things considered. Obviously they'll be the favorite, but it wouldn't be a shock to see USA go through.
  11. 9 games/4 months...that's pretty soft. Odds are only one or two of those games is meaningful.
  12. Mike Trout just keeps being ridiculous. Putting the ball in the air more so his average is down, but he could approach 40 HR's this year. 2014: 323 PA's, .307/.399/.607/1.006, wRC+ of 178 In his career, he's averaging 10.4 WAR/162 games.
  13. What I'm more curious about is how do you miss that as a referee? You have to be aware of Suarez's history, and the bite mark was pretty clear. But, I suppose you can't show him off if you don't see the bite but only see the imprint of his teeth? Just a completely weird situation. I mean seriously, who bites a guy?
  14. Should still go through...but that one does hurt.
  15. Two or more points should almost certainly get them through (unless Portugal win both and make up the goal differential). A loss today and they still go through with a win vs. Germany, but those are pretty long odds.
  16. Career splits for Gennett are pretty incredible. RHP 405 PA .349/.384/.532/.916 LHP 72 PA .147/.171/.162/.333 It just seems like long term the club would be better off with some type of utility IF who could play Weeks' side of the platoon and play a bit around the infield too. I can't imagine Gennett is truly this bad vs. LHP but this is a cut and dry case of a player who needs a platoon partner.
  17. Can we please have a GhostOfQuantrill amnesty day? IIRC, it was about two years ago that this poster named after a dead confederate general ranted about how the Cardinals were so great at getting hard-working, gritty folks of a certain skin tone, while the Brewers had so many problem players. Yeah I want that guy to come back.
  18. I'm betting many teams would look extremely good on paper if you did this same exercise. More interesting would be to look at just the players who truly came up through the Brewers' system. You could either define that as Milwaukee-drafted players, or something like players who came to Milwaukee before they reached AA. But I'm too lazy to do either! Fielder has really struggled. Scooter Gennett has a higher ISO than Prince Fielder this season. Never thought I'd see that.
  19. If it's a blowout they should have somebody plunk a DBack with an eephus pitch.
  20. World? Dude could star for the Monstars in Space Slam.
  21. As far as all-star voting attack-ads go, this is my all-time favorite: The Lucroy one is nice, and obviously done by official folks, but it's not really a Yadier Molina attack ad without some umpire spitting and cursing.
  22. Just saw it. It's almost hard to think of a situation where it would be more obvious the HBP was intentional. It's just stupid, and Gibson really ought to sit out a few games for this.
  23. Much of this just has to be a matter of plate discipline. His out-of-the-zone hacking has been well documented (39.4% which is 10th highest in MLB). But his Z-Swing percentage is lower than most other hackers. Thanks to Fangraphs' handy excel export, I defined (probably unoriginal) Rel-Swing% as the likelihood of swinging at a pitch in the zone, relative to an out of the zone pitch (z-swing/o-swing). The laggards are... V Martinez 1.57 J Segura 1.60 C Johnson 1.64 R Braun 1.66 P Sandoval 1.67 If you re-define this as Z-Swing%-O-Swing%, you get basically the same thing. Really this just tells us what we already knew, but I thought it was interesting nonetheless.
