  1. Of course, had it been a US Open they would have likely just played #11 the same way but labeled it par 4, and played another par 5 (maybe #2) a few yards shorter and labeled it Par 4, giving us a -12 champion. Conditions were good for scoring, not sure how much rain they got on Friday but it seemed to be a good amount, with very little wind. I do wish the course had played a bit firmer, but so it goes.
  2. I've been loving NBC's coverage of the premier league. Fox also has coverage of the Bundesliga this season, looks like a few games each weekend on either FS1 or FS2. So, we can decide between watching Julian Green not play for Bayern or Deandre Yedlin not play for Tottenham. I caught some of the Swansea-Chelsea game and was pretty impressed with how they looked. West Brom looked horrendous in the first half of their game which I caught yesterday, completely outclassed.
  3. I suspect much of the difference in fan behavior between Segura and Gennett is due to expectations; most of us were hoping Segura was a lock-in at SS for six years, but the past two calendar years have been very disappointing. Gennett was always sort of tough to evaluate for me.
  4. Old Town Club is where Wake Forest's golf team plays and that's supposed to be a fantastic track if you can get on.
  5. What type of batting line are we expecting out of Reed? It seems a bit lofty to expect lead-off production out of a guy putting up a .278/.379/.422 in Biloxi. I don't really see the reason to rush him unless he mashes in Colorado Springs (for whatever that's worth...). That said, bringing up a borderline prospect in a non-competitive season wouldn't be the worst stop-gap.
  6. Anybody know what the plans are defensively with these three? I'd have to imagine Castro could be supplanted at SS if they feel Russell's talents are better employed there. If Bryant can stick at 3B, even if Schwarber moves to the OF they're well-set defensively.
  7. Incredible depth on that list. Even all the way down at 31, you have WOAH SOLVVVRS
  8. It's often easy to forget in years like the past few where the cupboard has been so dry what a truly overpowering prospect can do in AAA. Weeks at age 22 in Nashville: 249 PA's, .320/.435/.655/1.090 Fielder at age 21 in Nashville: 441 PA's, .291/.388/.569/.957 Braun at age 23 in Nashville: 134 PA's, .342/.418/.701/1.119 I'm just going to enjoy the fact that there are a few guys in the system who make MiLB box-score tracking worthwhile again. Got my MiLB app ready to go this morning.
  9. Unfortunately I just think this is the nature of Ryan Braun 2.0. I haven't watched him closely this season, but if he's really just a .280/.340/.480 type of player at this point, I'd imagine having one or two month-long stretches of .725 OPS baseball in a season will be typical. Looking at his batted ball stats, I'm surprised to see his Pull% a shade below 30%, this was around 40% for his first few seasons. So there's certainly something about that feeling that he's not getting around on the ball like he used to.
  10. From Fangraphs pre-2015: "23. Malik Collymore, 2B Video: Collymore was an overslot 10th rounder that got $275,000 in 2013 as a Canadian prep standout that came on in his draft spring. He’s surprisingly well built for a 5’11/190 second baseman and has double digit homer raw power if his line drive game stroke allows him to get to all of it in games. Collymore is an above average runner with a below average arm that fits best at second base and is making progress there defensively. He had a big year with gap power in the GCL last year and, while he isn’t Mookie Betts, there’s feel to hit and a good shot he steadily moves up this list in the coming years." Sounds like a bit more than a guy you completely forget about. From the stats, it looks like he has some patience at the plate and a bit of pop in his bat.
  11. Well, perhaps the Orioles had some leverage here realizing the Brewers really had little reason to keep Parra around, and perhaps they were the only ones going hard after Parra. Who knows, maybe they'll get a throw-in too.
  12. You've got to imagine Santana has a very good chance of playing his way into the opening-day lineup next season. I'd guess Phillips won't be rushed so 2017 seems more likely if all goes well. Given this i see no reason to move him there before 2017 barring the impending three-way trade of Parra/Lohse for Harper/Trout. Braun's perfectly fine in the OF for now, so if we're just looking for a stopgap it's likely easier to find a 1B than move Braun and find an OF for a year or two.
  13. I'm in the Durham/Chapel Hill area. It's a nice spot for golf with the three University courses nearby (though the red clay is really bad for drainage during the winter), and the Southern Pines area about an hour south. You can find great golf in that area outside of the tourist seasons; Mid Pines is supposed to be a fantastic old Ross design that was recently restored and will run you about $150 during tourist season but can be had for $50 at times, same goes for Dormie Club, a Coore & Crenshaw design that tried to go the ultra-exclusive private route but opened to the public due to the housing bubble. I've never played in the Myrtle area, because usually when I go to the coast I go to the NC coast mostly to fish. If you really want to lose distance on your drives, there are times after a few rainy days in early February where drives will plug in the fairway.
  14. Needless to say, this team needed has desperately needed a good restocking of the minor-league system for a while. I don't keep up with this stuff as much as I used to, but this seems like a good haul, with Phillips, Santana, and Hader looking like guys to follow throughout the rest of the year. I always liked Fiers and Gomez. Hopefully they get a chance to make a playoff splash this season.
  15. http://stream1.gifsoup.com/view1/1333309/homer-simpson-cant-eat-o.gif How I feel reading interwebs, growing hopeful, updating to be reminded nobody like make trade for Brewer.
  16. This is what I get for going to bed early. Given that I'm on the 'complete reboot' team I'm still hoping they can find something decent for Gomez. Gomez has been one of the more fun players to watch in recent memory, but I just don't see them competing next season regardless of his presence.
  17. That basically makes sense -- per round, typically 4 par 3 chances at holing a shot from 125 - 225 yards, whereas per round there are probably at least 4-5 wedges/pitches into par 4's, and 2-4 pitches/chips/putts for eagle on par 5's. I've always wondered about the extent to which ball flight dictates hole-in-ones, as I feel like I hear about 10-20 cappers who have played for 20-30 years and have a few hole-in-ones. It seems like older golfers in particular, who are more likely to roll the ball past the hole as opposed to sticking it, may have a deceptively high chance at holing out mid-irons. I found that I probably lost 15-20 yards of driver distance in Wisconsin on a recent trip, as opposed to my typical days in the NC piedmont, basically due roll difference between the softer/greener Madison area courses I played and the firmer/browner NC courses I typically play. It's funny, growing up I always thought of lush green as optimal condition, but I've found that my favorite time to play down here is during dry times in the late fall when the Bermuda has just gone dormant, or in the summer when it's a bit baked out, and really requires creativity around the greens.
  18. Anybody have an idea of the typical ratio of eagles per hole-in-one for a scratch-ish golfer? Just a curiousity, certainly PGA data would not be too difficult to use but I'm more curious about non-insanely good golfers. I've never had an eagle, though I just started playing again a year ago, got my handicap down from about 12 when starting to about 7, and hoping to get into low single-digits by next year by actually getting in shape. In the last five or so rounds I've played, I've had 3 or 4 putts in the 15-30 foot range for eagle, but missed them all by a grand total of about 12 inches. Oh well.
  19. From what I understand the players were trying to get as many holes as possible in before tomorrow morning, which may see even worse weather. Groups were allowed to either play or stop at their discretion; Tom Watson clearly wanted to end his Open career this evening rather than at 7AM so it was a nice move of his playing partners to continue through #18.
  20. St. Andrews is just such a fantastic venue. 11-12-13-14 might be one of the most strategic, thought-provoking stretches you ever see. I'm looking forward to logging a half-dozen hours in front of the iPad tomorrow with the BBC feed!
  21. Screwy lineup tonight for USMNT with Yedlin, Brooks, and Johnson out and Mix, Garza, and Ream in. Granted Yedlin was sloppy vs. Honduras but Brooks and Johnson made up for the Chandler-Alvarado struggle. Must just be a rest for those guys, but they haven't looked overly convincing vs. Haiti thus far...
  22. Printers, in general, are the worst. Out of all of the pieces of office equipment I can get frustrated with (computer hardware/software, tablets, projectors, copiers, etc.) it's always the printer that I want to smash a la Office Space. My (new) home printer won't recognize half of our devices. We replaced our old one because it wouldn't recognize half of our devices.
  23. Braun's sitting at a 125 wRC+ right now, and just skimming the NL OF leaderboards there are about ten players right around him, along with McCutchen, Harper, and Joc Pederson. So, it would seem that Braun would fall into the category of 'not a snub, but not a bad choice had he gotten in'. A-Rod has been one of the ten or so most productive AL batters this season, so I'd imagine that omission has to do entirely with the fact that he's A-Rod.
  24. I wouldn't have imagined the team that looked like they might get shellacked by Australia in the first half would go on to win the tournament in such fashion. Great to see the US women return to their rightful place atop the world. The quality of play in the womens' game has improved so much over the past 20 years that to me this victory is far more impressive than the previous ones. Now, with the pipeline of young talent on the Mens' side, we can start to get excited about 2018 and (moreso) 2022. Julian Green, DeAndre Yedlin, John Brooks, Gideon Zelalem, Emerson Hyndman, Christian Pulisic...The USMNT could legitimately make a run to the semi-finals in the next decade. But first, a Golf Cup victory can assure the USMNT will put them through to the Confederations Cup, which would be nice.
  25. I have no idea why, but I basically became a Brewers fan at random on opening day in 2004 when I decided to turn on the game. Having watched literally zero start-to-finish Brewers games before that season, I would guess I found a way to watch or listen to nearly 1,000 innings of Brewers baseball that season. Watching them implode that season wasn't so bad; I was still learning the intricacies of the game and enjoying learning about the league, the players, the metrics, etc. The 2005 season was probably my favorite season of Brewers baseball since becoming a fan, knowing that the team was solid, and only going to get better as guys like Weeks, Fielder, and that Canadian singer guy made their way into the lineup. Oh, and next year, Sheets will stay healthy. I watched that game against the Twins, and later would see Fielder hit a 2-run walk-off vs. the Pirates (while proudly sporting my Derrick Turnbow shirsey -- closer WOAH SOLVDD). I miss those days of foolish optimism.
