  1. http://www.fangraphs.com/graphs/1010978_1177___sgraph_%20_7_14_2011.png Fangraphs has a somewhat fun tool called a WAR Graph that you can use to plot player's nth best season against their WAR in that season. The above graph is for Pujols and Ripken. From the graph, you can see Pujols accumulated more WAR in his ten full seasons than Ripken did in his ten best seasons (combined). I'm not terribly fond of their use of defense on a season by season basis, as I just don't think it accurately measures a player's performance on a season by season basis. Numbers for purely offensive WAR are easy to find on Baseball-Reference as well.
  2. He wasn't exceptional, but he was above average and he threw an incredible number of innings. WAR doesn't say he was dominant, simply that he was a pretty good pitcher over the course of a very long career.
  3. Niekro threw twice as many innings, but Martinez still put up 79 WAR to Niekro's 98. Pedro was far more dominant than Niekro during his tenure in the majors, but Niekro stuck around for way longer. You see similar stuff if you look at all-time batting averages. Pete Rose has the record for hits, despite hitting "only" .303, while Ty Cobb hit .366. Again, the difference is simply in the fact that Rose had 2,500 more at-bats than Cobb.
  4. I've seen an incredible amount of Scheister Lawyer ads on TV recently. I rarely saw those when I lived in Ioway. Do Scheister lawyers actually have law degrees? They seem pretty thick.
  5. Thanks rawbecht. I'm really hoping it's not Gamel then. Ike Davis should have 1B locked up for a few seasons and he obviously won't be playing at 3B. Jason Bay is in LF and Carlos Beltran is in RF. Unless a Beltran trade is in the works (which is not at all unlikely) I'm not sure where he could play. So, Gamel is indeed someone who has been moderately successful in the majors but I don't know that he would be able to be a big part of the club unless Beltran were shipped out of town.
  6. Gamel's on the 40-man though, no? They can have Stetter as far as I'm concerned, I just don't want to lose a guy like Kintzler.
  7. I just remembered all the K-Rod drama from last season. Hopefully he leaves that crap in New York. While the incident certainly wasn't funny for the parties involved, I find it slightly humorous that the man he allegedly assaulted is named Carlos Pena. Perhaps that will garner a few chuckles out of the crowd when the Crew face the sCrUBS.
  8. Given an off season to work, he could probably be better than Yuni or the bottom tier of SS's. Really though I just don't see the purpose given that he has become a solid 2B and a very good overall player. I've actually joked about moving Gamel to SS simply because he probably couldn't be 30 runs worse than Yuni at SS while he probably would be 30 runs better at the dish. At least I thought I was joking...
  9. Didn't expect to wake up to this. If it's really just a couple of guys like Austin Ross and Lee Haydel, I think this could well turn out to be a good deal. With K-Rod in the 8th and Axford in the 9th the club should have one of the best shut-down combos in the major leagues. I'm assuming they won't even try to mess with offering K-Rod arbitration.
  10. I was hoping for a Jonathan Lucroy late-April type of base-running play. You know, like Castro gets into a pickle and Weeks just keeps running until Castro is tagged out and then Weeks gets tagged out halfway between second and third, all while playing that song from South Park they play during the "Animals Through a Wide-Angle Lens" show.
  11. Well, he's got to be the MVP so far, no? As much as I downplay the loss of Fielder in terms of the club's ability to contend, I'm really going to miss watching the guy hit. Dude can mash.
  12. That was the sense I got as well. Why can't they just enjoy a great baseball game?
  13. Heat index of 110'F here in NC today. I took my black tricolor Australian Shepherd out for a few minutes and used my infrared thermometer to register 120'F on his shiny black coat. I've been told that his outer coat insulates him from the heat, but I feel terrible for him on days like these.
  14. Yeah, without trying to sound like a Cardinals fan, I've gotta say that was pretty weak. Heck, Upton has only hit 32 HR's the last two seasons to Weeks' 46.
  15. Only a couple from Berman. There hasn't really been a true mashed ball yet though.
  16. http://argentina-futbol.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/carlos-valderrama.jpg Did anybody else think of Carlos Valderrama upon seeing Prince's older son's haircut?
  17. Outside of Berman, I love the HR derby and all of all-star weekend. There must be something in every red-blooded American that makes us love watching a guy hit a baseball 450+ feet.
  18. That makes more sense, but I'm still pretty surprised it was called. The Brazilian (Erika?) who literally sprinted off of her stretcher should be ashamed of herself. It seems to me like the officiating at the last couple FIFA World Cups has been significantly worse than the officiating you see at a mid-table premier league game. I watched a lot of Premier League football this last winter, and I can't recall this kind of garbage occurring very often.
  19. Kevin Correia will be added to the All-Star team. I can just see the business card: Kevin Correia, MLB All-Star
  20. That's actually an interesting thought. Chad Moeller came to mind first, but he only got 350 PA's in 2004. Ronnie Belliard was another thought for his 2002 season, but he only got ~300 PA's that year and was productive the two seasons prior.
  21. Perhaps us good folks at BF.net would be kind enough to get him a time share in the Maldives. From just listening to his comments on the highlights, I agree with most of what has been said. He doesn't have a great voice but he obviously has a good understanding of baseball. I also want to like this guy, which helps.
  22. I think they have a good shot. Just punching it into a binomial calculator with a .550 true talent level, the probability of winning 41+ is about 32%. It's really not even that unlikely for a .500 team to go 12 over .500 in that many games. Since I'm a Brewers fan, I'll let my irrational fandom drive me to say that yes, they will win 90 games this season.
  23. Clap. Clap. Clap. Let's give some much deserved respect to Kameron Loe for his solid two innings. That's huge in a one run game, as is evidenced by the result tonight. I'm really happy Cordero made the decision to go to Cincy for the extra $4 million. Of course, the whole Gagne ordeal never would have occurred...Still though.
  24. In Yuni's first three years, he contributed 3.6 WAR for the Mariners, who signed him to a $3.8 million, 4 year deal from Cuba. It was the extension that was laughable, and then one of the worst trades ever made to send him to KC. It's time for the Counsell/Wilson soft platoon. Those guys will at worst be slightly below replacement level together; Yuni is a replacement level player at his best.
