  1. Over the past three years, they've both put up an OPS+ of 98. I agree that Furcal has a higher upside, but I also view him as a far riskier target. Carroll would be a pretty clear upgrade over Yuniesky, even if he isn't anything special. He's a solid MLB player, which Betancourt is not.
  2. Come on now, this isn't really fair. If we're just talking this season, Furcal is hitting .176/.240/.218/.458 and Carroll is hitting .285/.357/.353/.710. I'm not sure what you have against Jamey Carroll. I know you say you don't like a hitter whose greatest asset is drawing a walk, but what of his .277 career batting average? He's hitting about .290 over the course of the last two seasons. Just because the guy can draw walks doesn't mean his only skill is drawing walks. He can't hit for power, but he does swing a decent bat.
  3. I know zips doesn't account for the platoon advantage, but zips projects the following numbers for the rest of the season:Carroll: .211/.282/.408/.690 Boggs: .218/.322/.376/.698 I think a .750 might be a bit optimistic. I don't think the platoon would be as productive as Hart, but I could go either way on the $9MM. Those are not platoon projections. Players hit better with a platoon advantage.Which I said in my post...and why I said .750 might only be "a bit optimistic" for two guys who have struggled offensively in the majors and have hit AAA pitching well but not exceptionally well.

  5. I wonder if Maller knows how to calculate ERA. It does require knowledge of 5th grade math. The Mariners are horrible. I was one of those foolish nerds who thought they would be awesome a couple years ago. At the time, I must have forgotten that scoring runs is important to winning baseball games. They just gave up a 2-run lead in the 1st, and trail 3-2. This could be 14 losses in a row.
  6. Well I won't complain about the lineup too much. It's amazing how much better this lineup looks with Plush. 4:05 start times on Sundays suck.
  7. MJ, your story made me think of the only time I was written up during my two years of dorm life. My floor Freshman year had a really awesome RA, the type of guy who would pretty much just let things be as long as students weren't bugging anybody outside of their rooms. A few huge trees had just been cut down outside our dorms, and there were several cross sections of the trunk, about a foot tall and 2-3 feet wide. A couple of my friends and I rolled the logs up to our floor (only a half flight of stairs) and stacked them up to the ceiling in front of his door. As we were about to finish, some RA from another building who was doing rounds wrote us up. I'm still bitter about that.
  8. Understanding platoon advantages is one thing I think Ron Roenicke does reasonably well. Of course, a lot of the platoon cases on the Brewers are pretty obvious (Morgan vs. LHP, Kotsay vs. LHP, McGehee vs. RHP, McGehee vs. LHP)
  9. Amazingly, after going 0 for 25 last season vs. LHP, he is 5 for 10 this year against LHP. Is it wrong of me to be scared that Roenicke will start using Kotsay due to his ability to "make an adjustment to LHP's over the offseason"?
  10. whizkid, I think that's accurate. This season, his wRC+ is 121; he has been an above average hitter this season and his defense is probably slightly below average but not bad. I think people are overestimating Gindl, if he becomes the type of player Corey Hart has been I will be very happy with him.
  11. He pretty much has to be the Chorizo, right? Known for its zestly flavor, but really a sausage that doesn't get the respect it deserves around the Wisconsin sausage eating community. Really he's more of a Spanish Chorizo than a Mexican Chorizo though. When he's on your side he's wonderful but when something goes wrong he'll give you a gut ache, just like a poorly cured Spanish Chorizo. Corey Hart would have to race as a Slim Jim.
  12. She had a hit? I'm not trying to be smart, I'm just pretty out of the pop music loop and I knew the name but I don't think I've ever heard anything she has done.
  13. Listening to the Fox broadcast and the broadcast team showed the following statistic as an example of how good Brian McCann is: Brian McCann is the 7th fastest catcher to 500 RBI's. Seriously? The guy slugs almost .500 for his career and that's the best you can do?
  14. Cozart is on the ground injured right now. Something with his left arm. It doesn't look good. I'm not a doctor and I'm terrible at determining how bad these injuries are, but this could be a broken wrist. He's leaving the game now with his wrist wrapped.
  15. I'm going to go ahead and nominate this for post of the week.
  16. I would call that gesture borderline offensive, but not really obscene. It is very similar to the grade school "suck it" gesture that kids used to do in the 4th grade lunch room. Talking to the fans like that was stupid, but hopefully it will just blow over.
  17. I agree that it's an overstatement to call Hart's contract an albatross. Even if he is just an average player, paying $19 million over two years is not bad. I'm okay with what Hart is: A mediocre outfielder with decent pop. He's a nice piece to this team.
  18. I agree about Giants fans. This is getting pretty ridiculous. It's amazing to see the parallels with the Cardinals (see: McGwire, Mark; Bonds, Barry). As for charging the mound, I'm happy Braun and Weeks haven't yet. I'd rather see them do damage with their bats than their fists. If Plush gets on base via a HBP, the best punishment would be steals of second and third, and home plate on a passed ball.
  19. His DRS is -10 (-7 at 3B). His UZR is -4.4 (-2.0 at 3B). Man, those are rave reviews.
  20. Well, hopefully this little misunderstanding doesn't escalate against the San Francisco Cardinals. In defense of the SF fans, I probably would have thought it was some kind of gesture too; all the more reason for T-Plush to get his name out there!
  21. Thanks for the PM, I really appreciate the suggestions. One of my favorite things about him is that when he crashes after exercise, he crashes hard.
  22. Surgery isn't typical for a collarbone, is it? This must be a pretty serious break.
  23. I think one of the big differences is that the Brewers were legitimately a very good team while the Pirates are most likely a slightly below average team playing way over their heads. I still would have to be offered 20:1 to pick the Pirates to make a playoff appearance this year.
  24. Uhh...Actually pretty much anything you want to look at says he sucks in the field.
  25. Any other Eastern Timers want to see who can stay up the longest? I'm going to be really proud of myself if I can make it past the third inning.
