  1. PretendAstronaut, I'll assume that's Craig Counsell at 2B and Yuni at SS. Of course, I wouldn't mind just leaving 2nd wide open and having both Counsell and Yuni play short (/blue). Here's to another afternoon of listening to Len and Bob complain about the Brewers.
  2. Well, I hadn't realized he was considered to be a "defensive whiz". His bat should be painful, but if he is an elite defender it should be offset by his glove work. Having never seen him play before though I'm hesitant to comfort myself with that reasoning. Can anybody attest to his defensive abilities?
  3. If he's only out a few weeks, I'm not sure. If he's going to be out the rest of the season, I'm not sure. This very well could be the season that defines Melvin's tenure with the club. Luckily this happened before the trade deadline.
  4. Ueck made that sound like he'll miss a good deal of time. Weeks might be the worst player for the Brewers to lose. I'll be happy if it's just 15 days.
  5. I haven't read through the actual methodology, but JC Bradbury found this a few years ago: "I looked at how pitchers performed with and without Duncan, controlling for factors such as age, parks, and pitcher quality. I found that Dave Duncan’s pitchers improved their ERAs by about 0.35 runs—yeah, he’s pretty darn good. " I'm not sure what he did to account for defense though, and you've obviously got to take these things with a grain of salt if you haven't read the actual studies. I do think there might actually be something to this "Dave Duncan Effect".
  6. Do they realize that most Carlos Zambrano MLB games are rated PG-13? I'm not one to tell other people how to raise their children, but this could seriously affect that girl's childhood.
  7. At this point I largely agree that Counsell has to turn it around immediately or he should go. While his bat is comically bad at this point he still has a bit of value as a 3B/SS defensive replacement. It's hard for me to argue that his value as a defensive replacement is worth that 25-man roster spot anymore. Also, where all of Kotsay's skills are redundant (worse offense than Carroll/Morgan/Braun/Hart, worse defense than Carroll/Morgan/Braun/Hart), Counsell is still a better defensive infielder than anyone on this roster outside of Weeks.
  8. Well, given that the Brewers still have an outside shot of catching the Braves in the wild card race, this is like a double win for the Brewers. I'm always curious to know how much cash comes in these deals. I mean, who in their right mind would pay for Wil Nieves? That would be like my garbageman paying me for the opportunity to take my garbage.
  9. I know there have been rumors of a Kenny Williams fire sale, and he's certainly a guy who has made some boneheaded moves in the past (see: Rios, Alex). Ramirez is owed a bag of baseballs and nachos this season, and from 2012-2015 he's owed only $32.5 million. He's an average hitter who is usually good for a ~.270/.320/.420/.740 line; he's above average in the field and on the bases. If the Brewers could get Ramirez for Gamel I'd be thrilled. Not going to happen, but it would be sweet, and Kenny Williams is Kenny Williams.
  10. This seems like a win for both sides, although I don't know a lot about Wheeler. With Beltran that lineup suddenly looks a whole lot better. Philadelphia is still the better team, but San Francisco is clearly making a strong push to repeat.
  11. Looks like he was pretty nasty. 10 K's to only 1 BB, got it done in 105 pitches.
  12. I like it when division rivals get rid of "cancerous" 3-4 WAR center fielders with 4 years of control left for a half a season of a #2/#3 SP. Perhaps given that Jackson is actually somewhat nasty the whole "Cardinals" effect wont occur.
  13. I thought I could pretty clearly see Lugo's pantleg ruffle when the tag was laid on him. After watching it a few more times though, I agree that it was not as horrendous of a call as it seemed. I'm confident that replay would have overturned this call though.
  14. If they get Green for K-Rod while McGehee continues to struggle this will be a horrible trade. I'm really starting to wonder if Green is part of the deal, and I have a bad feeling he is in the deal.
  15. I just saw the umpire's comments on Sportscenter. He basically said something along the lines of "He might have got him on the shin, I don't know". Look, everyone does something stupid. Just have the guts to say "Yeah, I completely blew that call and cost the Pirates a chance to win the game".
  16. I'm not sure where those comments are coming from either. Hart has been pretty productive. Perhaps part of it is just that he is what I'd term an "ugly" ballplayer. He's tall and lanky so he looks slower than he is, he takes some terrible swings on sliders away, etc.
  17. I've always felt like good Pilsners have really lovely hop flavors but they're pretty subtle and they just fade into astringency when they aren't fresh. I was never a big Pilsner guy until I had Sam Adams Noble Pils and Victory Prima Pils both fresh, and they were pretty excellent.
  18. Since the break he's hitting .220/.319/.439/.758. A player like Weeks will have quite a few stretches like that in spans of ~50 PA's.
  19. Normally I'd say this is a great spot to bring in K-Low for an out, but I'm nervous about this...
  20. I thought that might have been Plush trying to bunt for a base hit. Obviously I could be wrong though.
  21. Boulevard Double-Wide DIPA tonight. Pretty solid brew, but I think it might have been a bit old since the hop flavors were somewhat muted. Not overly bitter for a DIPA, lots of caramel/toffee sweetness up front balanced it out. On a side note, I hate it how most breweries don't put "bottled on" dates on the bottles, especially with IPA's and Pilsners. I don't care what freakin' batch number it is. Just tell me if it's fresh!
