    As it stands, Phillips is wasted on the bench on big league team. Might as well have him play everyday in AAA. Unless Braun is a disaster at 1B, Aguilar is the odd man out in all of this. I think he's out of options so someone probably claims him. Cain and Yelich will play everyday. As much as I hate his defense, Santana should play almost every day only because Braun can't nor should he. His body just can't take it. Thames gets most of the starts at 1B platooning with Braun. Broxton becomes your 4/5 outfielder/defensive replacement/late inning pinch runner. In my mind, Braun should getting the fewest PT of all these people except Broxton only because he can't stay healthy for a full season. I'd rather get 400 healthy PA's from Ryan instead of 600 and him gutting it out through August and September at 75%.

    It's more about VORP than OPS/OPS+. The glut of corner OFs/DHs - and good ones - has reduced the delta between him and the average available corner OF/DH. Put those numbers on an athletic CF with good defense... very different story. CF and corner OF are two very different positions so those aren't really comparable. Of course a 900+ OPS, gold glove CF is going to make bank but there's only 1 Mike Trout and he's signed for a few more years. There was no free agent hitter on the market even close to JD in terms of hitting ability. Cain, Hosmer, and Moustakas were the next best free agent hitters and the best OPS+ they ever put up between them was 132. Most were in the 100-110 area. JD is well above average. Hypothetically speaking, not considering team finances and who else is on the team, I would take JD on the contract he just signed over Cain on the contract he signed every time. There just aren't many hitters in baseball that will give you that combination of above average BA, with great OBP, and great SLUG.

    Overall this year's free agent class was very underwhelming but I can't understand why everyone was so down on JD. You can argue about how much he "deserves" all you want but he's the rare complete hitter. Since he went to Detroit and turned his career around he's slashed a pretty awesome .300/.362/.574. That's a great AVG, OBP, and SLUG. The defense is definitely a knock but he was portrayed as a HR or bust slugger, which he is not. I felt he was the star of this year's free agents and it wasn't even close. Certainly age and defense need to be considered, but next year's FA star Bryce Harper has an OPS+ of 148 since 2014 when JD went to Detroit. JD's is 149.

    Thank god. It has gotten terrible the last few years. Although I'm not sure how they'll enforce someone other than a coach or catcher as a "mound visit". An infielder bringing the ball back to the pitcher can talk to him at the same time. Is that a mound visit? As someone posted above, a lot of this is on the umpires for letting it get out of control. They have to power to not grant time and keep the game moving. Aside from that one time Joe West wouldn't let someone (Yadier I think) go to the mound I've never seen an umpire do anything about it.

    I wasn't trying to say he should have been DFA's but just pointing out that while his overall 2017 numbers look good, he was flat out awful in the second half.

    Dickerson First Half OPS - .903 Dickerson Second Half OPS - .690 His first month OPS was 1.015 and final month OPS was .596. His OPS each month was worse than the one before. The 2017 numbers look good because they were propped up by an amazing first 2 months.

    I agree that it's the main job of an agent to get the most money possible for his players and Boras has been good at this, that's why he gets so many upper level players. Then again, even though Boras generally is effective, he often employs a risky strategy and sometimes his clients get burned by this. Just this offseason, it's been reported that Holland and Boras turned down 3yr/52 million from Colorado because they pushed for a 4th year and the Rockies instead gave that same contract to Wade Davis. Now Holland looks like he may need luck to get half of that 52 million or get stuck taking another one year deal. Gonna be interesting to see how things play out for the rest of his unsigned clients because i don't think anyone really knows right now. The thing about Boras is that it really doesn't matter to him if Holland or any one particular player doesn't make bank because Scott has 4 or 5 guys that will get paid. That's where he'll get his money and headlines. He gets to spread out his risk and make outrageous demands for all his clients knowing only a couple will get ridiculous contracts, some will get "fair" contracts, and others will get left picking up the scraps in February. I feel a little bad for those guys who could have gotten modest, multiyear deals but gambled and get the shaft before spring training, but they knew what they were getting into when they signed with Boras.

    Unless they ask you or dig into it, there's no way for them to know. And if it's something they bring up in person and make a stink about it you should probably unfriend them in real life too.

    Why do people say that guys like Miley are insurance? Insurance for what? It would have to be an absolute catastrophe for him to appear in a Brewers uniform this season, and we have plenty of guys that deserve a shot before he does. Insurance to me is when you have a guy like Sogard to back up Villar if/when he falters. Wade Miley is far from insurance, he is a bum that truly serves no purpose. None. This. If things get bad enough that Wade Miley needs to be an important part of our rotation, Suter or Wilkerson should be getting a shot over him.

    You can just unfollow or unfriend the people you're sick of. I did that during the election and cleaned a lot of negativity out of my life. It's a shame this is what social media has come to as I actually enjoy staying up to date with people I rarely see in between the posts of people saying they hate everyone who doesn't agree with them.

    Exactly why I wish it was explained more. Who are all the other outliers on that graph and what is the theory that the information means anything?

    Because it's February 15th? Why would the Brewers offer it though? This late in the offseason, the teams should have all the negotiating power, especially with the bottom barrel free agents. All the incentives are what makes me think Stearns anticipates Miley coming north and hanging around for awhile.

    Looks like the Orioles didn't get the collusion memo. Cashner isn't supposed to get paid that much to be less than mediocre.

    I read the article and I still don't understand how him being an outlier when looking at two random stats shows anything. I think there's is correlation between hitting the ball to center field and high BABIP. But not in this case which is weird. As for Clark, I love him as a prospect. Can't teach those OBP skills at that age. Obvious swing-and-miss problems, but I'm optimistic he'll turn the corner there. I get that but is the writer pointing out that Cody Bellinger was an outlier too and therefore Trent might be good like him?

    Every year the Brewers bring some crap veteran from Arizona and play him way too much. They've got too many of those options this year.

    I figured seeing what BF.net had to say could convince me this wasn't a totally crappy and pointless signing even for a minor league deal but nope, you've only reaffirmed my beliefs. You can say minor league depth all you want but Miley would not have signed here unless he had very good reason to believe he would make the roster out of camp.

    That's true but I also think they don't want people to see that none of the big free agents are there or how few overall came. I'm sure it's only bottom tier and 4A guys that will go to this camp. Everyone else has their own trainers and offseason workouts. Why would JD Martinez risk getting himself hurt for free and take away whatever payday he's going to get? Missing spring training time will mean absolutely nothing for the majority of players, it may help them if anything keeping the pointless wear and tear off their bodies.

    Every NFL game is broadcast nationally on the same couple networks so their TV deal is with the league. Most MLB games are broadcast only locally on local stations so the deals are negotiated with the teams individually. I agree that is where the income disparity comes in but you can't really compare the NFL to MLB in that area because they aren't the same. I'd guess MLB TV deals work almost the same as the NBA or NHL but I know nothing about them. Maybe someone who does could explain how they work.

    Every year many guys that had decent seasons the year before end up getting replaced by younger options. There's also generally a top down approach keeping middle-class guys like cashner from getting contacted. I'm sure he's talked to teams, but the Brewers/Twins/Phillies/other teams are targeting Cobb/Lynn/Arrieta/trades first with Cashner as a backup plan. Also, I'm not sure why a team needs to discuss anything but money with an agent. These teams have information coming out their ears on every single player, they know every single stat and attribute of every player before they call an agent. I love the quote from Boras, he's seeking what players deserve, that gave me a good laugh. Not once in his life has he ever seeked what a player deserved. I'd feel for the players a bit, but I'd somewhat enjoy if some of his players remained unsigned into May/June/July and fired him for better representation. That guy is a prick, and absolutely terrible for the sport. With those middle to bottom tier free agents, the only thing you're paying for is certainly. For example, why would the Brewers pay $5-10M a year for Andrew Cashner when they could possibly get the same production from dirt cheap Brandon Woodruff. Woodruff could be a total disaster this year and Cashner is probably a guaranteed 4.25-4.5 ERA with middling K numbers. Is Cashner's production worth 10x the cost of taking a chance on Woodruff? I'm sure the Brewers and most other clubs would say no.

    First off, I think Harper would have reached minor league free agency before age 26 had they not called him up. Secondly, the union would have thrown a well deserved fit if Harper spent 7 more years in the minors than he did. I agree with your general premise about trying to keep guys for their prime years rather then having them hit free agency during their prime years but that's just not going to happen. And other than Arcia, I don't really feel the Brewers are aggressive at all with promotions.

    Signing Darvish does not stop the nose dive to back of the rotation starter that Lester is on or magically make Tyler Chatwood the mid to upper rotation starter that advanced stats and scouts seem to think he will be despite not putting up numbers like that. Does it make the Cubs better this year and for the next couple, provided Darvish stays healthy and effective? Yes. Does it make them "OMG they're going to win a million championshipz!!!11!!1" No. Not at all.
