  1. If we're trading Gennett, moving Segura to 2B is a lateral move at best, probably a downgrade. Scooter has consistently outhit Segura during their careers to the tune of 80 more OPS points and 21 more OPS+ points. If you look at WAR, Scooter has 4 in his career to Segura's 4.8, despite Segura playing almost twice as much. I'll give you Segura would be a defensive upgrade but that won't make up for the amount of offense lost. Also, why keep the guy with less years of control who's going to start getting expensive? I personally wouldn't be disappointed to see Segura non-tendered this offseason.
  2. This. I've always thought a traveling minor league team of free agents would be a good idea. Guys aren't signed to an organization but still get the opportunity to play. Sort of like the NBA's D-League. They already have this. It's called the Independent League. Except the talent level is so much lower than affiliated ball. A guy like Jim Henderson could sign a minor league deal with some team and never get called up because they don't have a need for him, regardless of how well he pitches. Or he could play for the AAA "Free Agent" team and be signed by any organization when they need a BP arm.
  3. Which is best done in games. A coach hitting fungos isn't even close to the same thing.

  5. I guess that would be the Brewers of the late 90's and early 2000's, so the answer is: they would do pretty bad.
  6. Off the top of my head, Alfonso Soriano, Dante Bichette, and Adam Dunn would strongly disagree with you. It is pretty simple to be bad outfielder, I'll grant you that. Hanley Ramirez, circa 2015... Aside from Hanley, those guys just weren't athletic guys, they could hit the ball and had to play somewhere in the field. No amount of practice was going to make Adam Dunn a better outfielder. He just didn't have the physical tools to be good at it. You get better in the OF by playing it. There just really isn't much to practice. With infield play, the repetition of taking ground balls, turning double plays, knowing where/when to take cuts from the OF, cover bases, look back runners, and follow trail runners are things that you can get better at with practice.
  7. Ya, Miller merging with Coors had no effect on either park.
  8. There really isn't much to "learn" about playing the outfield. You run after the ball and throw it to the cutoff man. It's pretty simple. Certainly there is experience to be gained by playing there in games such as reading balls off the bat and communicating with other fielders but it doesn't take a whole lot of "learning" to be good at it. He can work at 1B before games and then play OF during them. There's no reason to tie him to one position right now, especially one that is so stacked in the organization and when he's still 2 or 3 years from the bigs.
  9. Good point. I'm all for the rebuild, but that doesn't mean putting young guys on the MLB roster if they aren't ready. If they don't have a good option for 3B next year, and can't find a long-term option in trade, I have no problem with them picking up some journeyman on a 1-year deal to cover the position until a better option arises. We are not going to have high-upside young players at every position... especially early in the rebuild. Rivera has some promise, but if he isn't ready for the big leagues, it isn't going to help his progression to throw him to the wolves. Let him develop a little longer in the minors until he is ready. What exactly are the projections for Rivera? I've never seen anything about his bat being anything special but his defense should be good. If he projects to be a utility infielder then what's the harm in breaking camp with him and rotating him around the infield? I'd find it hard to believe that his bat is going to get that much better by spending more time in the minors or that his development is going to be hindered by being brought up early. Sure, he might put up a .650 OPS but that's what got from Segura and Perez anyway.
  10. A few months ago weren't we all excited about Wainwright getting hurt, and then Holliday and Molina? Ya, that didn't stop them at all. Whatever deity that controls the universe is a Cardinals fan and they will always win games no matter who they put on the field.
  11. There's no reason he can't play both, right? Work him at 1B a little next year and a little bit more the year after while still spending most of his time in the outfield. I really hate how all major league clubs have this idea that a player can only play one position at a time. Your minor league players should be playing a position or two. In the long run, that flexibility is a great benefit to both the player and the organization.
  12. I thought it was pretty good. I saw it with a friend who read the book first and said the movie followed pretty closely to the book.
  13. I wish I could even do a pushup. Because of an injury my left arm is completely useless for holding anything more than about 25 pounds.
  14. Looking at his career numbers, the only teams that should have any interest in giving him significant playing time at any position are bottom feeding rebuilders like us, Reds, Phillies, and Rockies. Those other teams have 3B settled though. I wouldn't be surprised if one of those teams with a history of signing random no-name players and turning them into utility superstars signs him like Pittsburgh or Tampa Bay. No matter where he goes I just don't see him being anything more than a 25th man/infield depth. I think we have players in our minors that could come up and out perform him right now.
  15. I thought I remember reading about some implications regarding Wang's control because he was taken off the 40 man this year. Is he a free agent or was it just that he can be taken in the rule 5?
  16. Isn't that the case every year anyway? Once the Packers start, baseball isn't even an afterthought. It's a no-thought.
  17. Whatever you give up for Plouffe now, you won't be getting equal or greater value for when you trade him unless he goes gangbusters. Doesn't make any sense to do it.
  18. What is the problem? Are teams afraid he's going to have more issues in the future or because of the issues of the past? Ray Rice and Greg Hardy are talked about all the time. I have never heard anything about KRod's situation (other than here) since it happened. And even then it was barely even mentioned and it was weeks after it happened.
  19. Agreed. I see it posted all the time that patience can be taught. It probably can be slightly improved upon but guys don't go from a .280 OBP to .330 because of an increase in walk rate.
  20. Because people realize that Ray Rice and KRod are two completely different situations and I highly doubt any MLB GM has reservations over acquiring him because of it.
  21. Leake is just oh so average. Career 101 ERA+ and a really low k/9 and he's going to get $12-15M or more a year. Not a great investment at all for the Brewers.
  22. Both teams agree to a deal. If the acquired players fail, it's not the other GM's fault.
  23. Interested to see what happens with Henderson. I was never a believer in him but he went from closer to never talked about minor leaguer pretty quickly.
  24. I've always been surprised that the Freedom From Religion Foundation hasn't made a stink about God Bless America being played at games. Maybe they will now that it's known that the government is paying for it.
