  1. No, no, and a thousand times no. Makes absolutely no sense for the Brewers to sign him. Especially since he's going to be greatly overpaid because he had a couple hot weeks in the playoffs.
  2. With Cecil injured the Jays only have one LHP in the bullpen. They have to be judicious as to when to use Loup. They kept Price in to face the Royals' LH hitters Hosmer, Moustakas, and Gordon. Why hasn't Buehrle been added as a lefty out of the bullpen? He doesn't have "reliever stuff" but he throws strikes.
  3. Urias is probably the most untradeable prospect in baseball right now. With Friedman running the show now it's going to take a young, controlled superstar to get him. Trout and Harper are probably the only guys they would consider for him.
  4. In hindsight, yes, he should have been pulled but he was throwing strikes and they were all singles. There is something to be said about putting the ball in play. Taking walks and swinging for the fences is great when it's working but sometimes you just need to put the ball in play.
  5. I've watched all of 1 inning of the Tor/KC game and Laz Diaz has made MANY horribly, ridiculous strike calls. He called 2 on Bautista that were mid-shins. This is the best they can get for playoff baseball? Hasn't Laz consistently been one of the lowest rated umps by players?
  6. I don't think anyone is saying that Maddon isn't good or that Counsell is great, but the Cubs have a loaded roster. Any halfwit manager should have been able to take them to the playoffs this year.
  7. The drop in BABIP and strand rate (which isn't really all that much different) could have a lot to do with playing with an actualy defense behind him. Especially with Donaldson at 3B, where I'm sure a lot of the balls in play off of Estrada are headed. I don't have time to look it up now but in the middle of the year when there was a similar post about Gallardo being so much better I pointed out most of his rate stats were the same except for his H/9 which I said at the time was because he didn't have the Brewers defense behind him. Beltre/Andrus alone is a huge upgrade over Ramirez/Segura. If anything I think the success these two guys have had with different teams just shows how bad the Brewer defense has been and any upgrades there will help the pitching staff more than any coach could.
  8. SS is handled by Seager so Segura is of no use to them. He's not really of use to many teams. Peralta hasn't really been consistent enough for a playoff contending team to warrant him as an upgrade. I think they will open the bank to keep Greinke and when teamed with Kershaw, a returning Ryu, and Alex Wood that leaves one spot that is probably for Urias. I also think the Dodgers would just prefer to pay a free agent who could equal Peralta's output than give up a young player. I guess they could use Lucroy. They already have Grandal and having two good hitting catchers seems pointless when you have Gonzalez at 1B. Braun they could use for sure. They went from having massive depth in the OF to nothing but question marks. Crawford will never be healthy, Puig is looking like an above average player instead of the superstar he was, and Pederson fell off a cliff after starting out like gang busters.
  9. How does the expansion process begin? Does an ownership group need to apply for a franchise or does MLB just decide it wants more teams and then send out for bids?
  10. Stop starting the games so late and having them take 4 hours. That would draw more people in then what channel they are on. I don't blame network stations for not wanting to pay so much. The playoffs force you to not air your primetime shows which just started a few weeks ago. I imagine the ratings and revenue is better for those shows than playoff baseball.
  11. You can have all the geniuses you want on the payroll, but can they compete with the team 90 miles to the south that has both the geniuses and the revenue? My guess is Milwaukee is a stepping stone job in their minds. Duh. I doubt any of these guys other than maybe Stearns took the job with the idea that they are going to stick around for 5-10 years. They got the opportunity to come to Milwaukee, do a good job, and build their resume so they can go somewhere else and get a higher position and make more money. It happens in every industry.
  12. You guys are either grossly overrating Counsell or underrating Joe Maddon, or both. I'd wager there's not a single GM in baseball who would take CC over Maddon. It's like comparing Aaron Rodgers to Jameis Winston. The point isn't to compare Counsell and Maddon. The point is that it doesn't matter who manages a team with that much talent.
  13. Can someone explain what is happening in Toronto with the protest and all these "rules check" reviews?
  14. Somehow I don't think the Dodgers are ready to dump an .850 OPS outfielder for a guy who was one of the worst starters in the entire league last year. Ethier is a bad contract, but he was almost a 3 WAR player, so it's not like he doesn't provide something to the team he's on. Yes, the Dodgers have a glut of OF, but so do we, and getting rid of a bad contract to take on another big contract at a position that's not a need doesn't make a lot of sense. Crawford was actually negative WAR last year, and is owed more than Ethier. I'm not in favor or against acquiring a bad contract for Garza but there's no reason that acquired bad contract can't be "Arroyo-ed" to get a prospect or even Garza himself.
  15. I was going to add something similar to my post. If the Dodgers are eliminated before the appeal, his suspension should be increased. Two playoff games are not equal to two regular season games.
  16. Utley's appeal isn't going to be heard until the middle of the NLCS. What is the point? I understand the MLBPA asked for some time to make a case but over a week? Come on. His appeal should have been heard the day after so the suspension actually makes a difference. His suspension better be upheld and even lengthened, although I'm sure neither will happen.
  17. See, I don't want language like "butt on the ground" or whatever because there will be plenty of instances where that is too hard to call on the field and you wind up getting more stupid replays and having inconsistent calls like plays at the plate. Changing it to slide directly at the base is a good start but it also has to include language about barrel rolling and throwing forearms. Most importantly, though, it needs to actually be called by the umps. And I think that will be the hardest part to change.
  18. I'm 100% agreement with this. None of the NL teams do anything for me. However, I like all the AL teams. I guess I'm pulling for Toronto/New York the most.
  19. The Marlins should not move for at least 20 years. Yes, their fans suck but they just spent hundreds of millions of tax payer dollars on a stadium. To have that hardly even paid for stadium sit there empty would be a slap in the face to the citizens and I would assume lead to lawsuits against MLB, Loria, and probably even the city council. Obviously a problem with expansion is diluted talent but it would probably also lesson the amount of top prospects that are held down because of service time because they would be more beneficial to the organization by playing in the majors than some 5A guy.
  20. That is a big part of the problem. There isn't a clear definition for the judgement. Having criteria written that will say what gets called, and setting the criteria for reasonable player safety will help. The current unwritten judgement rules are not good enough. I agree this is the problem but I'm worried about how they fix it. The home plate collision rule is still not well understood by umpires and ruled inconsistently even with replay. I can see this turning into the NFL catch rule where there are countless scenarios for when something is a completed catch or not. NFL catches, home plate collisions, and takeout slides either are or aren't. You know it when you see it happen, there shouldn't be confusing criteria for these situations.
  21. (7.09(f)): (f) If, in the judgment of the umpire, a batter-runner willfully and deliberately interferes with a batted ball or a fielder in the act of fielding a batted ball, with the obvious intent to break up a double play, the ball is dead; the umpire shall call the batter-runner out for interference and shall also call out the runner who had advanced closest to the home plate regardless where the double play might have been possible. In no event shall bases be run because of such interference. Every takeout slide is a deliberate attempt to interfere with the fielder and break up a double play. There is no written rule about being able to touch the base.
  22. So why is David Price pitching in relief when the Blue Jays are up by 6 and Dickey is pitching fine through 4 innings?
  23. The rule states the runner cannot attempt to interfere with the fielder. Every takeout slide is an attempt to interfere with the throw. The way the rule is written, interference should be called 90%+ of the time but how often is it actually called?
  24. Financially, no one is going to lose money and the players are going to make money with 50 more jobs and more teams to bid on free agents. The local tax payers will get screwed but no one is going to lose money.
