  1. Let's look at it this way. Say the trade never happens, forget about not having Yelich, we could be getting next to nothing production from guys who were supposed to be our top prospects and the future of the club. Would have been interesting to see how Huira/Diaz worked out with both being 2B. Maybe Keston gets moved to first sooner. Maybe Isan gets moved to 3B or the outfield.
  2. 5 Pandemic Mistakes We Keep Repeating This is a bit of a lengthy read and doesn't really have any new information but as someone who has hovered in the middle during this whole mess it was quite refreshing to read something that wasn't so firmly either "how many grandmas have to die so you can go out to eat!?!?!?" or "if you wear a mask you're a sheep".
  3. Some of you seem to really like to rag on the Brewers for this but did they have any other options? Were there any other networks out there making legitimate offers for broadcast rights?
  4. The team knows what Arcia can do at SS so there's not much to gain from him getting anything more than the minimum reps there so why not try him somewhere else in spring training? And if Urias wins the SS job there really is no reason for Orlando to even be on the team unless he can play a bunch of other positions. There's probably pitchers I would rather pinch hit before him.
  5. Pitching velocity is really what dictates the game right now. It leads to the all or nothing approach at the plate and on the mound that results in mostly K's and BB's with some HR's thrown in. Maybe moving the mound back would negate some of the advantages of velocity. I know the Atlantic League experimented with that a few years ago but I don't remember hearing if it made any difference.
  6. If guys haven't made that change yet, they're not going to now. They'll just swing harder. Guys who are shifted against because they are big pull hitters don't change their approach at all, they just try to hit it over or through the shift.
  7. I'm going to guess that the deadened ball isn't going to lead to drastically reduced homeruns but will drastically reduce all other hits. It's going to take an even more perfect pitch to hit it hard now and I think the players are going to swing less because of that. Walks will probably go up too. I don't think strikeouts will change much. Mistake pitches will still be hammered for homeruns but guys are going to be swinging even less at pitches around the edges because they won't be able to hit those pitches as hard as before. It's almost like players going from a metal bat to wood. With either bat you can hit it hard if you square it up but with a wood bat you need to shrink your strike zone and be more selective because the end and barrel are not as forgiving as with a metal bat.
  8. https://arstechnica.com/science/2021/02/covid-precautions-no-match-for-the-common-cold-and-its-ready-for-a-comeback/ To sum the article, it speculates that as COVID becomes less of a threat and restrictions are eased that common illnesses like the cold and flu will explode because our immune system hasn't encountered them in so long and will have lost some effectiveness against them. I too have wondered how our immune systems will handle not having much to do for a couple years. Especially for young children that haven't been exposed to all that much in their lives. Because he's never been in daycare, my almost 5 year old has only been sick twice in his life. He had a bad cold when he was about 1.5 and then had the flu when he was 2. He's in preschool now but it's a very small class and he wears a mask so I can't imagine he's getting a whole lot of germs compared to what he would have gotten sans-pandemic. I'll just make sure he eats even more dirt and licks everything for a little boost.
  9. Wouldn't it be $42 higher to make up for it?
  10. I don't think streaming services, as they are currently setup, are the future. Pretty soon every network is going to have their own service you have to pay for. I see people already rebelling against having to pay for multiple services just to be able to watch a handful of shows because it adds up to more than the cost of cable. And as others have pointed out, streaming services keep raising their rates and taking things away, just like cable/satellite.
  11. He has to be looking at a one year deal now that P&C's have reported, right? For one year why not. Cain can't play everyday anymore. Yelich out there almost everyday and then a rotation of Cain, Bradley, and Garcia between CF and RF should work out fine.
  12. It appears there might be some regret on Counsell's part with their decision to let Shaw go to begin with. Obvious hindsight, but his pedestrian results with the Blue Jays last year were still significantly better than what the Brewers got from the 3B position in 2020, especially after Gyorko started playing 1B nearly on a full time basis. I hope there's no regret. He was putrid before the Brewers released him and then not very good last year.
  13. Some team would want to pay him to play baseball for them next year first. I don't see that being very likely.
  14. People do realize he's not getting a $340M check today, right? Haven't seen the breakdown yet but he's most likely getting only a few million a year the first couple seasons then probably settling in the $30-$35M a year range the last 10-ish years. And in those year the Padres will spend less money on other players and will be called cheap and greedy at that point. There's only two outcomes from this contract. 1. In about five years, he'll be the superstar player everyone hopes he would be but then he'll complain that the team sucks because they can't afford anyone to surround him with so he's traded to the Yankees. 2. He goes total bust and turns into an albatross that keeps the franchise in the gutter for a decade.
  15. At what point do we run out of comic book stuff to make movies and shows about? It seems like everything is either comic book related, remake of 90's sitcom, or let's see how crazy of a concept we can come up with and go with it.
  16. Just sit Rock behind the plate with his phone and livesteam it on Facebook and IG.
  17. About 10 years ago I went to Dodger Stadium for a Brewer game with a friend of mine and his sister and her boyfriend. It was the infamous Gabe Kapler robs a homer by falling into the stands game. We were about 5 rows from where he did it. That was cool. But anyway, on the way out of the stands it was a bit congested and my friend's sister bumped into some lady in front of her. The lady immediately turns around and shoves her, obviously looking for a fight. My friend's sister shoves her back. Luckily, the respective boyfriends separated the ladies before anything more happened and that was it. I don't know if my friend's sister was wearing Brewer garb, I'm sure both he and I were, but it was just bizarre how quickly it escalated. And I don't think she was drunk either. On the way to our car in the parking lot we saw some flashing lights and assumed it was a minor fender bender. Heard on the news later that night there was a knife fight in the parking lot. The whole Dodger Stadium experience was just weird.
  18. If all it took was a 2 year deal I would have been fine giving him $40M over those two years. Spending that money on pitching is nowhere near the upgrade spending that money on Turner would have been.
  19. Arcia, fool me once, shame on you. Fool me five years in a row, shame on me. He is what he is, above average glove and no bat. It's not impossible he might become a competent hitter but he's been given more chances than most players and still hasn't done much. Even if you want to say he "broke out" last year his season is inflated by a .455 BABIP in July. August and September he was slightly better than his career but still nothing acceptable for a starting major league hitter. As for taking the money for Turner and using it on pitching, no thanks. This offense is pretty much crap and has been for years. Take out Yelich playing like vintage Barry Bonds for two seasons and you may have the worst offense ever in modern baseball. The pitching is fine. You can never have enough but making the choice to pay for a mid-range pitcher over Justin Turner is just dumb to me. Now if/when he signs somewhere else, sure, spend it on pitching. But choosing pitching over a huge offensive upgrade right now does nothing to fix what has been a glaring hole on this team for years.
  20. If Turner is out of the picture and it's between Urias and guys like Shaw or Candy just roll with Urias. He's younger, cheaper, better defensively, has more defensive versatility, already on the team so he costs nothing, and certainly has more upside.
  21. But why Shaw? He wasn't as bad last year as he was in 2019 but he was still pretty terrible for a corner infielder.
  22. Do the Dodgers really need Turner? I don't think so. He's just a luxury at this point. I think the only way he goes back there is on their terms - 1 or 2 years and "low" dollars. Doesn't mean he'll be a Brewer but I think he's likely not a Dodger this year.
  23. Wilson and the Seahawks aren't happy with each other apparently. If he's traded too, the QB shuffle this offseason is beyond crazy.
  24. Until pitchers stop routinely throwing 95 and up K-rate isn't going to change much. And I think that's your biggest culprit right there.
  25. I don't see it mentioned here but the runner in extra innings rule is staying too.
