  1. Here's my biggest concern. Prince will likely want a long deal, it seems that 7 years is the norm for elite hitters in free agency. A 7 year deal to him means Braun's contract expires before his. This puts the Brewers in a tough spot down the road. It's unlikely they'd be able to resign Braun with Prince's contract on the books. Prince is certainly the more valuable of the two down the road, but I expect Braun's body will hold up better long term and he will be the better investment down the road. But perhaps a couple of sub-par years at the end of Prince's contract are worth the 5 awesome years of having he and Braun continue to hit together.
  2. I agree about arbitration. I was very unhappy with Melvin for not offering arby to Lopez and Cameron. As it turns out, Lopez remains unsigned and Cameron got less money than he would have accepting arby. Melvin was certainly more astute than I gave him credit for. Does anybody here have a good understanding of the dynamics between a player and an agent? What role does the player have in the negotiations? Specifically, can a player who is employing an agent sign a deal that the agent doesn't approve of?
  3. Wow... do you have any more stereotypes to throw out there?
  4. I recently played through an old version of Out of the Park Baseball, in which Dave Krynzel and Brad Nelson (real names not used in the game, but their equivalents) both developed into all-star talent. It reminded me of how highly regarded they were in the scouting world when they were in the low minors. I'll second Enrique Cruz, and his rule-5 partner Matt Ford. Ford had a very solid half a year in the majors. Cruz was pitifully bad his year in Milwaukee, but hit well enough in the minors for the Brewers to spin him for Brian Shouse. Others: Ben Diggins, Chris Saenz (remember his one major league start? complete game shutout, then sent back down never to see the majors again.) Pete Zoccolilo (sp?)
  5. I loved the David Wallace appearance. Turns out the one guy in Dunder Mifflin who truly respected Michael was also an idiot.
  6. I have a ton of respect for Up. I'll be rooting for it to win best picture, even though it's not likely. I'm glad to see Pixar get a best picture nod. Not only are they making the best animated films by a long shot, but some of the best films period. The "life montage" at the beginning is about as moving as film storytelling gets.
  7. It's entirely possible, though, that Gomez's defense compared to Edmond's defense makes Gomez worth more runs in centerfield, even with the weaker offense. I'd hope that if Edmonds bumps anyone, it's Hart.
  8. This is the "feel good" move of the off season. Davis is solid, relatively cheap, durable, and left-handed. Plus, he was a fan favorite, and he always seemed to genuinely appreciate his time in Milwaukee. What's not to like? I think we Brewers fans will always have a special attachment to him because we got to watch his "rags to riches" story, if you will. I'd love to see him finish his career where it started.
  9. I love Conan. He's the most clever man on late night network TV by far. And he deserves a chance to continue on the Tonight Show. However, I remember thinking when the Conan/Leno deal was first announced a couple years ago that Conan wasn't the right fit for the Tonight Show. Carson and Leno kind of had this "guy we can relate to, down to earth" thing going, while Conan had a puppet dog who smoked a cigar and swore at everyone. The difference between Conan's show and the Tonight Show, in any incarnation, was huge. Conan is still as funny as ever, but I'm not surprised that he's not catching on as Tonight Show host. Granted, more time and people could get used to him in that role.
  10. Is it possible that McGwire breaking the homerun record after taking steroids was merely a coincidence. Similar to coming down with the flu after getting the vaccine. Doesn't mean that the vaccine gave you the flu... There's no way to know, but interesting to think about. Maybe McGwire would have broken that record steiroids or not. His hitting talent was much more than pure muscle.
  11. This should give you exactly what you're looking for. It made me think a lot. http://steroids-and-baseball.com/
  12. My mom loves Jay Leno. I bet a lot of us can say that.
  13. Corey Hart's career may be taking a similar path to Bill Hall's. Tons of physical gifts, fighting to earn playing time, and finally getting it by displaying good power and solid defense. But the lack of plate discipline has made the league easy to adjust to both of them. Hart needs to take more pitches or he's never going to be the 20/20 guy that he should be.
  14. CF is a lot worse. Probably on the order of 20 runs. Replacing Looper with Wolf might close that gap, if Wolf has another good year. Hardy vs. Escobar may be a wash, but Escobar's offense could well make it a downgrade as well. Adding Hawkins and Zaun could close that gap. I think the team is probably about the same unless Bush and Parra step up, in which case they'd be better.
  15. http://philadelphia.phill...p;fext=.jsp&c_id=phi Halladay signs an extension for three years, $60 million.... seriously? He's certainly worth considerably more than that. Imagine what he'd make in free agency... wow.
  16. I hope they can swing a hand-shake agreement for DiFelice to return on a minor league deal, like they did with Capuano. I'd love to see him have a chance to make the team again in 2011.
  17. From the JS blog: "They just cut ties," said McClung. "They said they had no desire for a non-roster situation. Outside of that, everything was positive with my star there. I enjoyed being a Brewer." Sounds like McClung was willing to stay on a smaller contract, but is gone for sure. no minor league deal, ST invite, or anything. This is disappointing. I like McClung. He's not worth what he would have made in arby, so the non-tender was the right decision. But why not sign him to a minor league deal if he really wants to be here? He's a versatile pitcher who's given them plenty of quality innings.
  18. Exactly! Couple that with unproven player at SS and 3rd, and Counsell becomes extremely valuable to us. He can play all of those positions, and (with the exception of Escobar) can play them better than the starters can. Plus he's a local guy and a fan favorite. Counsell is the must.
  19. Very interested. He's the buy-low guy I'd most like to see the Brewers pursue. Probably riskier than Mark Mulder, but the payoff is potentially a lot bigger.
  20. Jim giving Kelly the Twilight poster for her secret santa gift was priceless. This was probably my favorite episode of the season. Michael's interaction with David Wallace has been fun to watch, I hope it doesn't end with David getting fired.
  21. I'm glad Melvin was proactive about replacing DiFelice. This is a very solid addition.
  22. While Wolf has certainly been inconsistent, this is much better than a "Suppan-like" move. Wolf, at his best, strikes out a lot of batters. That is a skill worth spending money on. Suppan's only selling point was "winning games" with no good stats to back up his "talent." I like this move. It's probably the best one they can make in the current free agent market. Plus, he fills the "requisite" lefty in the rotation role, taking some pressure off of Parra.
  23. I'm very happy with Zaun/Rivera at catcher. I'd actually like to see Lucroy and Salome spend time in AAA next season. I'd bet one of Salome/Lucroy is on the trade block, otherwise they have three catchers lined up for AAA with Kotteras. Wow, that's some good catching depth.
  24. I think Andy is the show's most hit and miss character. When he's funny, he's really funny. In this episode, especially in the opening scene "baby talk", he was painfully unfunny. This episode made me realize how much I really miss Jim's innocent messing with Dwight. The whole plot against Jim thing could turn out to be great, but so far it's making me really dislike Dwight.
  25. Not offering arbitration to Lopez is an absolute blunder. It makes that trade pretty much worthless with no draft pick coming back. Ugh. What a bad offseason.
