  1. What is troublesome is that the 2019 pen wouldn't be a major concern if Woodruff or Burnes were still there and Anderson was in the rotation. So far, this would have probably been the better play. Yet, long term? I don't know. The crew knows the better play is to have all 3 young guns in the rotation and I love it, and so does John Smoltz, who during the broadcast of sat game, said the brewers are doing the right thing, and hopes they can overcome the temptation to move them to the pen. He said their patience will be rewarded. He loves all three of our young guns. I agree. There's no reason to take guys who can be really good starters and move them to the BP. You only do that if they fail as starters and thus far, none of them have. And I think just about everyone can agree CC did an awesome job last year managing this team, usually making the right call at the right times(some complained he had a quick hook, but that was about as bad as it gets). That was the preferred way of winning games last year because it had to be. But I'd still rather see Corbin Burnes develop that change a bit more and become a guy who is capable of going 7 strong than used out of the pen.
  2. I agree. I'm always more skeptical of a guy like Brinson or players who have more movement in their swing and are a bit undisciplined. It's so much easier for big league pitchers to get them out. I may be wrong, but I don't think people are saying it's a slam dunk though. You're right, that's almost never the case with a minor leaguer. Baseball is such a mental game that you can get in your own head and screw yourself up for a dozen different ways. Just looking at the box scores thus far and not having watched him, it appears as though he's getting more aggressive, maybe anxious as he's on the precipice of the big leagues, perhaps trying to hit for more power. I doubt he's running into pitchers with better stuff than he saw in the Fall League. Either way, the speculation one way or the other is probably pointless. We'll know soon enough if he's going to be a good big league hitter.
  3. Ok, but what else are they going to say? "He's ready right now, he's not going to develop any more?" To the second part in bold, can we stop doing this? He's got 18 PA's in AAA. If he goes 4-4 can we come back and say, "see, he's putting up great numbers in AAA?" Of course not...that'd be foolish. The belief in Hiura has absolutely nothing to do with his AAA numbers or lack thereof. And nobody's acting like he's Trout. We're acting like he's an advanced bat and the best 2nd base prospect in the minors...which he is. A guy we drafted at 20 years old just two years ago who recognised as the best hitter in the draft and has done nothing but hit well in advancing up to AAA. Why would that not excite us, especially given what we've had at 2nd base? This year we've got a 3rd basemen signed for 10 million because we didn't have anything there. I just don't know how people can make a statement of fact about something that we've got no way to actually prove either way right now. You're basically just stating an opinion as fact. It's not close? Talk about the unwarranted love for a player. Moustaksas has a career .307 OBP, a .738 OPS at 3rd base. He's gonna hit some HR's, but he is unlikely to hit for a high average or get on base given that he's 1000 games into his career and he hasn't yet. Finally, last part in bold, I haven't seen anyone calling for them to bring him up right now. I don't think people who are more bullish on him want to see him up and obviously, people who don't see the reason for excitement don't want to see him up. I haven't seen anyone say he should be up right now.
  4. I'm confident it'll end up being solid, but I personally am really hoping they don't try to do that with Nelson. If he's not healthy enough to pitch, we've got bigger problems. But at this point, after all the rehab, his shoulder is going to have to get back into shape, he's going to have scar tissue, but using him in the pen for 2-3 innings? Once Nelson is ready to go, I think he slots back into the pen. think there's a very very small chance he becomes a long man in the pen.
  5. Closer to 5-110 or 6-128. I don't see Kimbrel looking for a 2-3 year deal maybe a 4-year deal but he is going to want at least 5-years and his AAV should be around $20-22m. Well, those are the highest numbers we've heard. That's like the 400 million for Machado or Harper. I remember Olney reporting the initial ask was 6/108. Just a little more than the AAV of Wade Davis for twice the years. That was back in October. Not hard to see why he's watching baseball in April. Can't imagine he's still on that number which was just THEIR starting point to begin with. I'm sure he's still high, but I doubt they're asking for 6/128 right now. Especially with all the big boys out of it. Who have his suitors been? The Mets? They have the money, but added a ton already. That's the most realistic one. The Braves as noted are notoriously cheap relative to their revenue and the control they have over that big block in the Southeast. The Sox were clear from the start, the Yanks certainly don't need him, the Dodgers I guess could have been an option given the salary they traded away and Kenley's heart issue, but I never heard them brought up. Cubs, payroll-luxury tax. Not seeing any outs here for Kimbrel. Sooner or later he's got to pick between actually sitting out and sucking it up and taking that 1 year 20 million dollar deal or whatever it ends up being prorated for whatever he's missed. I doubt he'd turn down 3 and 64...but who knows.
  6. Do you think it's at all possible the Brewers would go with a 6 man rotation once Nelson comes back? I think this would be an easier argument if they had the pen they expected with Hader-Knebel, Jeffress and then Wahl emerging as another high leverage reliever and then Guerra, Anderson, Albers and Claudio to round it out. But wouldn't this be a better would this be a better way of stretching these pitchers out and trying to limit their innings. It feels like the extra day of rest has led to some suggesting pitchers coming over from Japan have tired early, but I don't know how much there is to back that up.
  7. .272 with a really mediocre OPS and below average defense at AA. See how I just pulled into the lead? Your welcome for the advice. Happy to lend a hand where its needed. No, actually I don't. Namely, because you can't really pull ahead in how people "believe" a player is going to develop and just stating that a prospect is going to go through "growing pains," isn't really a hot take. But beyond that, just on a fact-based discussion, do we get to pick and choose which stats and what levels we're going to use? Because if we do, then I sure wouldn't be using batting average. I'd also probably look at how he's done as a whole and instead of dinging him because of a .272 batting average at AA, I might look at the fact that he was the AZFL MVP where he hit .323 with a not so mediocre .934 OPS. I'd also mention that nobody believes he's Bobby Grich at 2nd base. Or that he was the most advanced draft when he was drafted a couple of years ago at 20 years old. Again, I would mention this if any of it really mattered since it's not a fact-based argument, but an opinion that some people share regarding how the top ranked 2nd base prospect in the majors is going to do early on in his career. So thanks for "lending a hand" there bud.
  8. To me 35 in an inning is far worse as far as taxing an arm. Multiple inning appearances at least give you the break between pitches. I thought the belief in the baseball world was that it was more taxing for a reliever to get get back up for each inning. Meaning they get loose, pitch, now for a reliever not used to it, they sit back down, pitch another inning and that was the biggest factor in determining risk vs just pitch total.
  9. Does ANY baseball coach let his foot off the gas? It's baseball. What would you do, tell the hitters to not get hits. I had a coach who at a point would tell us no more stolen bases, not to take strikes and stop at 2nd unless it's over the fence, but that was if we were up like 10 in AAU.
  10. I think our upcoming opponents may disagree....but damn, love having that guy...and just as he's starting tot enter his prime years.
  11. I like to think of it as a pick your poison for Maddon. Can someone fill me in? Not watching right now.
  12. Don't know. Sounds awful. Coke seems like a company that just needs to stop messing with its main product. It's like twice as popular as the next couple of brands. Plus they have that Fanta if you really need strongly carbonated orange flavored soda. It'd be like Mark A trying to work with Yelich on his swing or Lasry showing Giannis how HE likes a good Euro step done.
  13. I'd much rather roll the dice with Barnes than Burnes. Burnes pitched yesterday. Maybe if there were one more day between outings and they told him...and it wasn't April 7th. Not that getting these wins now and kicking the Cubs while they're down and pilling up the wins while our BP is a mess isn't extremely important. Just not "pitch Burnes out of the pen," type important at this point.
  14. Yeah, I'm sure nobody in the organization likes that. He came in where he was supposed to come in and the plan was to back him up with Wahl, Knebel and JJ. The best-laid plans....
  15. Hader says hello! Yeah, I would be pretty shocked if Hader isn’t out there for the long haul at this point. He hasn’t pitched since Tuesday, will likely go the distance here and be unavailable until later in the week. Not ideal, but without another run or two at least, it may be the best option. Otherwise...Albers? He'd have to be the next option, right?
  16. Lets see how quickly Harder can get through the 8th. He may get the 9th if he has a quick, easy inning.
  17. Certainly not ideal this early in the season, but 7-2 right now feels like stealing a little bit. If you can put the Cubs away and drop them to 2-8.....
  18. You can hardly fault Stearns for not planning for Knebel and Jeffress going down, but I was in the camp that was hoping we'd add a guy like Ottavino to further bolster the BP in the off-season. It'd have been a luxury move, but a better move IMO than trying to fit Moose in at 2nd base. Of course Wahl also went down. Perhaps Stearns thought he was going to be a viable high leverage reliever without spending the money.
  19. It's just hard to trust a guy who throws 6 pitches in an AB and can't crack 85 with any of them.
  20. I certainly hope they make a move a lot sooner than that. This team has just about everything in place and they jumped out to a great start in a tough division. It's disappointing watching Hader "reduced" to the last 3 outs and saved when we saw how valuable he was last year when you had a great closer. Edit-Of course just minutes after I post this, Hader comes in to put the fire out in the 7th vs the Cubs, meaning he'll likely pitch the rest of the 7th and 8th.
  21. What addition has been made that we had any inkling of beforehand? This would have been the only one, had it happened already. Still, not going to discount it until he signs elsewhere. I've got no reason to believe that he's bluffing about sitting out the whole year, but unless he is injured and is buying time as others have hypothesized, I don't believe it. How long does he really want to sit out waiting for a contract that just isn't going to come? Does he really believe that next year after sitting out a whole year teams are going to be willing to go 6/100 for a closer?
  22. Good catch. I didn't even notice that he wasn't in there. Adams has already surpassed what I thought he'd be last year. I thought he'd be good, but not a clear cut #1 WR'er like he has been. And I agree Jordy's been the best, he and Jennings career stats are remarkably similar. I think both got a bit overlooked outside of GB because of the weapons around them and their QB in their primes.
  23. Didn't get get rocked in SA already this year? Yeah ... but at this point, there aren't a ton of decent options, unless they want to add a guy to the 40-man roster. The only pitchers in the minors on the 40-man are Diplan, Donnie Hart, Adrian Houser, Petricka, Trey Supak, and Aaron Wilkerson. Houser just started on Thursday, Supak last night. I suppose Wilkerson could be an option, but I would guess it'll be Petricka or Hart. My hope is that they put Knebel on the 60-day DL and purchase Sanchez's contract. Good points. All the more reason to be thrilled with the first week+ of the season for the Brewers. You know they'll addres the pen and continue to look for guys who can get outs. What's the scouting report in Sanchez? I see he doesn't have overpowering stuff, but that's about all I can find on him other than his minor league stats.
  24. Not seeing the logic in giving up on Albers right now at all. He's earning a decent chunk of money that you're invested into him, two years ago he put up an ERA well below two and a ridiculously low Whip as well and he's pitched well this far relatively speaking. There is no reason to still want to move him right now. In fact, he's the only guy in the current pen with sustained periods of success as a big league reliever aside from Hader at this point, and he's owed a few million. We should be hoping he's one of the answers, not looking to dump him a week into the season.
