To Extend or Not Extend: Jeremy Jeffress
HiAndTight replied to Harold Hutchison's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Not a chance IMO. He's a reliever who doesn't have a history of being dominant. He's had a dominant year last year in Milwaukee, but that was really his first great season. I see zero reason to commit 5 years and 40 million to him. If we were gonna do that, I'd have much rather signed Ottavino to a shorter deal. I guess I'd give this type of deal to Hader....MAYBE given he's a much more unique reliever, but even then probably not until he was healthy and had another strong season. I honestly don't even feel that confident Jeffress is going to be a good high leverage pitcher or the Brewers THIS year much less in 2024... -
I don't really see any comparisons between the two. Mason was a big who needed the offense to run through him...at least a little bit. Jordan doesn't require the ball in his hands....ever really other than when he's rebounding it, or when they're out running. I guess they're both bigs who would be added to a winning team. But I don't see why he'd be a bad fit in any way like Mason?
-
Yes, literally based on one ambiguous video. I'll trust the Bucks and the age they have him listed at which is 21 years old. But I think every thing I've seen you talk about the Bucks was how awful they were run. This included the Giannis draft as they got lucky at one point and then it was prior to that. They've got the best record in the NBA and you can't let your blind disdain let you enjoy it without already complaining about the off-season and how much Brodgon is going to get overpaid. I guess if you just decide you're right(Brogdon is going to be overpaid) then no matter what he gets, he can argue he's overpaid. Either way, he's a tradeable asset. That's a face. Wilson is a tradeable asset. Fact. Maker, tradeable asset. I never suggested they could get AD or Walker, but you came in and definitively stated they had absolutely none. Also, the jump in the cap is not going to be like the year Delly and Telly were signed. So I don't know what Brodgon is going to get, but I'm I think I'll at LEAST wait and see before I declare him overpaid. Hell, I'll wait and see how he plays AFTER he signs before I declare the contract he's yet to sign overpaid.

That's an interesting interview. I was always under the impression the Bradley Center was built to draw in an NHL Franchise and that's a big part of the reason why it wasn't an ideal Basketball Arena. Also, when you think that Jerry Jones bought the Cowboys for 150 million in 1989 and we're talking several years before this, that 30 million dollar fee sounds high, much less the 50 million dollar fee. I realize there's not a direct correlation, but the most valuable or one of the most valuable franchises in sports is just 3 times more than the right to build an NHL franchise in Milwaukee? Who knows, maybe had the city gotten an NHL franchise, things would have worked out great, but I feel lucky as a huge Wisconsin sports fans to have 3 teams on VERY solid footing with two of them having new arena's and experiencing a lot of success at the moment and the 3rd one of the cornerstone franchise in the NFL. I was worried about the Seattle Bucks for a while, so... I do like watching the NHL Playoffs. I'm mostly ignorant about the game and only know the main teams and main players, but in the post-season, the game becomes so intense and the import of each shot goes up so much, it's a lot more enjoyable to me. Not sure I could get on board for 82 games season though.
-
Right. He's been really good for us this year. He's hitting 45 pct of his 3's. His biggest asset though is he's active, a willing defender, and has improved a great deal from last year. I think every Bucks fan is loving what they're seeing from Wilson this year. Especially compared to what most people thought of him coming into this year and a guy who was playing in the G league this yearI'd also add that Wilson is turning into a pretty nice looking trade asset as well for the poster who said we have absolutely zero trade assets and then repeated the same thing 3 times. Though I hope unless we manage to somehow add a real impact player, he doesn't go anywhere. Anway, on the topic of DeAndre Jordan, anyone think there's a chance he's bought out by the Knicks or the Bucks somehow make a play for him? As I said eaerlier, it seems foolish for a team like NY to give him much playing time when they're basically planning for Zion, Barrett and then all the Superstars that they believe will be flocking to play for their clown owner after the season. But I do think he could have a very positive impact on the Bucks...especially in playoff basketball when the pace of the game slows down.
-
I definitely thought Wilson was a bust coming into the season. I wasn't suggesting I was right on him. My point is that they're both young, both have physical talent(I think Thon has more) and most Bucks fans had written Wilson completely off. And with Maker, it's 2 years where he's been a nice player for us in the post-season. So still a tiny sample size, but more than 6 games. But we disagree on him. I can see him carving out an important niche role as a stretch 4 who's brings a lot of energy and who and be a rotational piece. I think you're embelishing his lack of physical talent a bit, but that's fine. As for Giannis, I'm not suggesting he should focus on becoming a 3 point shooter, I'm just saying he needs to take that open shot a tiny bit more often and that if he gets to be a better shooter in the next few years...and given how much he's improved every aspect of his game, there's no reason why he shouldn't be able to. He's amazing at getting to the basket and his footwork is just impressive as hell to watch, and with his length, his game should AWLAYS be attacking. I don't think you have to worry about him becoming a passive player standing around waiting for the ball to start jacking up 3's. I just see that as really the last area of his game that he needs to improve upon and while I think he's already on his way to becoming the best player in the league(just as soon as LeBron slows down or retires), this would make him that much more dangerous. We all agree he's at his best attacking. I'm merely suggesting that this would make that aspect of his game that much stronger....which I'm sure you'd agree with.
-
Yeah that thing seems odd. My guess is Rizzi threw some number out there and once he got it he thought he could do better. Apparently, he got along really well with LaFleur. Apparently Rizzi didn't want to uproot his family from Miami, and the distance between Green Bay and Miami was just too much. Green Bay definitely met his asking price, so money wasn't the issue. He was just hired as the special teams coach for the Saints, so mission accomplished on his part. People tend for forget that you have a real life outside of the game. That unless you're making a significant move, ie, HC, OC, DC and progressing in your career, it's a LOT to pick up and move your family from Miami to Green Bay. Especially with young kids who have friends. I am curious how you KNOW definitively that GB matched his asking price? I'm not doubting you, just asking.

No, that was not the logic of Shaq. You don't need to interpret what Shaq said because he was pretty blunt about it. He said that he's so good attacking the rim, he shouldn't even bother improving his shooting because he doesn't need it. Which Charles said was stupid and Kenny more diplomatically said, "yeah, but when he develops into a better shooter, he's going to be impossible go guard." There was no mention of him dribble around the perimeter...though he does that now before he attacks, nor was there any discussion of him hanging out on the perimeter...though again, that's where he has the ball before he attacks. So he's doing both of those things anyway(though neither were part of Shaq's argument). They sag off him making it that much tougher for him to get to the hole. If he can become a threat as a shooter, he becomes that much more difficult to guard. So finding logic in what Shaq said is....difficult as the rest of the panel agreed. The greatest player of all time had to imrpove his shooting to continue to evolve. Jordan wasn't a great shooter. Again, neither was Kidd nor Nash IIRC early on. He has the stroke, he has all the room in the world. He lacks the confidence. If he starts hitting them more like he did last night or the previous game when I believe he was 3-5, and he gets guys running at him, he's going to get that much better. As for Thon.....not buying it's a fluke. He's an extremely talented basketball player. I don't know what the issue is, but the last two years he was one of our catalysts for us in the post-season. He's an agile 7 footer who can hit the 3. And my point was to be continually putting fresh, long, athletic people on KD to make it more difficult for him. But I guess he's just a bumbling fool who was lucky to be one of our best players two years in a row in the post-season. I STRONGLY suspect you would have had a worse opinion of Wilson entering this season. Though I could be wrong. Maker needs regular playing time. As it doesn't look like that'll be on the Bucks, I'm fairly confident he'll have success moving forward and I'll take the bet that he's out of the league in 3 years.

They don't have anything to trade. They don't have anything to trade. They don't have anything to trade. They cannot trade a first round pick until 2024. DDV can't shoot. DJ Wilson is playing 10 minutes per game, and while better, still isn't that good. Thon is actually 26 years old (and the entire league knows this) and can't catch a basketball. 4 of their 5 starters are on expiring contracts. They aren't getting AD or Kemba. 4 years of complete mismanagement of the team has come back to bite them. They've got the best record in the NBA and I'm enjoying the ride... but man am I scared for this off season. SMH...this old refrain again. They have Brogdon to trade. They have Brogdon to trade. They have Brogdon to trade. They also have a large expiring contract to trade. Certainly not suggesting either are enough for AD, but c'mon. Also, everyone knows he's 26? Is this like everyone knows Pujols is 4 years older based on anecdotal evidence and reddit forums?
-
I can understand if they were to suggest that he doesn't NEED the 3 point shot to be successful, but he literally said, "don't worry about them shots, don't even practice 'em, just keep doing what you're doing." That's....just crazy to me. I also agree that he seems to take 3's begrudgingly. I think if he got himself into a better rhythm, a catch and shoot, or off the dribble, that he'd be more successful. But he seems to measure it up, take a last look around, make sure there's no other play, THEN shoot it. I'm also talking about like 2-3-4 years down the road him shooting a 35 pct clip. I do think if he gains more confidence in his shot, he could see a jump quickly as he does have a good stroke as you said. As for those fadeaway's...if he's posting up, that's one thing, but he's not Jordan. I can't stand seeing him shooting 15 foot fadeaway's either. The worst part of his game. All that said, in every game, there are so many plays that get missed that he makes that are just so huge. Another yesterday, he was playing D and his guy(I thought it was Kawai) was cutting. Giannis reached back, got his hand in the passing lane, knocked it out to whoever was on the wing, they got out and ran scored...because he was playing hustle D. Just the most entertaining guy in the game right now IMO.
-
I actually like Snell out there over Hill because he's so long and capable of defending multiple positions...which is exactly what you need. And he can knock down the open 3. Hill's obviously experienced and very good, he just doesn't quite have the size if he needs to switch to Klay or especially KD. Playing on the "Thon's good in the playoffs" idea, I'd like to see Wilson, Thon and then hopefully another athletic big we may still add thrown at KD to try and wear him down.
-
Well, we'll still have playoff Thon who keeps looking really good and aggressive in the post-season and has the athletic ability to close out and defend the 3. Why he's unable to translate that into the regular season is beyond me, but he has been a big sparkplug in the last two years come playoff time. This should be in a light shade of blue...because I'm not totally being sarcastic, but I also don't want to depend on him right now. In fact, I have no idea what to think of him at the moment other than I'm fairly certain if he does to another team he's going to become a Clint Capella type who can shoot the 3.
-
Exactly. To do what they did, and withstand the rush by Toronto without Giannis on the road, is pretty impressive. 3 out of 4 from Toronto, and won both games at Toronto. I'm more worried about Boston. Not sure why they aren't clicking; maybe not enough shots to go around and nobody is happy. If they start clicking though - Irving, Tatum, Horford (who has owned the Bucks for a decade), Morris, Hayward, Brown... lots of guys to defend. How about Giannis just absolutely taking Leonard to school a few times when they were matched up 1 on 1? That was impressive as hell. Especially the spin move to get to the basket and then the easy layup. By the way, anyone see where Shaq said that Giannis shouldn't even bother trying to get better at shooting the 3 because he's so good now? Was this his approach to his free throws? Because it'd make a lot of sense. If Giannis could develop into a 35 pct 3 point shooter....how in the world do you possible even TRY to defend that dude? You close out, he's gone. You give him 4 feet like last night, he can nail it. I'm not talking about Jason Kidd or Steve Nash type improvements from the start of their career towards the ends, but just an average 3 point shooter would make Giannis SOOOO much better than he already is...
-
Man...I could NOT disagree more. Every year they ask executive's who you'd rather start a team with and it's been between Giannis and this guy the last few years with him only getting dinged for injuries. I think he's a historical, transcendent talent who has a chance to be a top 10-15 player when all is said and done. I agree it's always tough to tell how good a guy is when he's the main guy on a bad team, but that applies more to guard and ball handlers IMO. When you can dominant defensively, without the ball, rebound like him...I think he's a top 5 player in the game right now with LeBron, KD, Giannis and I don't even want to name another because I'll be leaving too many people out. I just don't think it's realistic. I don't see what assets we have that match up with them. If we had our 1sts, or even Middleton or Bledsoe signed it'd e one thing, but we don't.
-
On a FAR more realistic note, a athletic 5 who grabs 13-14 rebounds a game, has been a multiple time all NBA defensive 1st teamer, and requires very few touches offensively SHOULD become available in the near future. I always thought while he was with the Clips, he'd be an ideal big man to pair with Giannis, however I haven't watched him play with Dallas at all recently. I know his D hasn't graded out where it has in the past. Is that the result of playing for a Clippers team at the end that had no direction and then a Mavs team that was not very good....or has his athletic ability eroded enough that he's no longer a good defender? Could this be the Maker trade? We move...say George Hilll and Maker for Jordan and a 2nd rounder this year? Or a 2nd rounder next year(I would like to recoup a draft pick). Or is it possible that the this is one of those moves where the Knicks just buy him out and aren't even trying to recoup anything for him because they're so desperate to not lose any cap room next year and they certainly don't want Jordan hurting their chances at Zion or even Barrett(personally, I'm going out on a limb and saying the later is going to be the better long term pro). So two parter, does he make the Bucks THAT much better, particularly in the post-season where we could face the likes of Horford again, Serge, and then Embid and Simmons(not that he'd guard Simmons). A guy who's less likely to get pushed around than our current bigs and is a much better rebounder than Lopez? I'd be interested to see what others have to say because I've been a big fan of his for a long time and while he certainly doesn't provide any spacing, he fits perfectly as a big man foer the Bucks in transition and gives temas another big, athletic guy to contend with. Plus...the Bucks achiles heal in the post-season the last two years seemed to be big men in the post that we don't really have an answer for. The idea of a Jordan block, Giannis picks it up, pushes it ahead to Bledsoe, Jordan trailing and a Bledsoe lob(a little reunion right there also) could actually bode well for the offense also. Given the Bucks serious interest in Jordan in the past, I'm guessing they've already inquired about the Knicks intentions with him. They did say that the players they acquired would be good veterans for their younger players, but they're tanking and not signing them after this year since they want KD and Kawai or whoever they think they can get, but will actually end up settling for Jimmy Butler and Kemba Walker. So they might as well lose as many games as possible. And like I said, George Hill+Maker(which I hate to do because I still love his upside) for Jordan+Knicks 2nd...that'd make me happy.
-
What if Milwaukee is where AD lands? There were one of the teams being talked about as having inquired about AD. Although it's nearly impossible to see how we could possibly pull off such a trade. Our most tradable assets are all free agents after the seaons. The next best are good players like Wilson or high potential players like Maker, but they certainly haven't proven anything yet. And even if there were some scenario in which the Pelicans wanted to just go all the way in the tank and dump Jrue in the same deal(I don't happen to think he's as good as others do, so I could see them wanting to move his salary)....we don't have nearly enough to make the salaries work. Still curious what the Bucks offered ASSUMING the report is true that the Bucks, Raptos and other teams have made offers.
-
No one has ever viewed Greinke as the mentor type. No idea where that notion is coming from. If the expectation is that you get Anderson circa 2017 production, then why not just keep Anderson? Isn't it just as likely that he bounces back as Greinke is to reverse a downward trend? No idea what Milwaukee would gain from that trade except all of the risk. No, definitely not in the traditional sense. I could see him helping a guy like Jimmy Nelson who's mentally tough and doesn't question that he belongs in the big leagues. I could see him asking some questions and Greinke answering. But he's not going to take out the young foursome of our young potential starting rotation to dinner(I'm throwing Brown in there) and really get to know them, and then share some of his stories along the way. I don't think he'd be a detriment...mainly because he was here, he wasn't. But it'd take a pitcher with a thick skin and a lot of confidence to work with him. So basically the anti-Manny Parra.
-
It's still not just 12 million per year. It's also almost 33 million in years the Brewers ostensibly hope to be competitive also. And I'm not sure how Greinke is going to make Burnes,Peralta and Woodruff aces. I really like Greinke, and if AZ wants to eat 60 million or so, and the Brewers want to give away remaining flexibility and they believe that he can reverse some of last years trends, I'd be on board. But you're making some huge assumptions to justify this and then ignoring others, mainly the money by presenting it at just 12 million year year in added revenue. The 33 million may come in handy when the time comes to try and extend a guy like Hirura or Burnes or someone who's not in our system yet. Again, lets just keep in mind, aside from the obvious payroll deterrent, Grinke was hit harder last year than just about any year of his career, had better luck and his BABIP was way down(IIRC it was like 30 points below his average while his hard hit pct was around 40 pct, much higher than his normal years) and his velocity was down below 90. And he doesn't exactly have the delicate touch to nurture young pitchers if they start struggling. He's more likely to tell them "you really suck right now" than anything else. Not saying I don't like him, just saying....there are a whole lot more reasons to NOT sign him than there are to sign him.
-
Same here. 99 pct of the names thrown out on here I'm totally indifferent to.....and I'm by no means confident he would be a stud for us, but he does seem like the type of guy who could catch lightening in a bottle as a more seasoned, smarter pitcher in a small market playing for a new contract(he is going to be a FA, next year, right?).

Yankees signing Ottavino, 3 Years - $27m
HiAndTight replied to JDBrewCrew's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
They must have been busy watching the Brewers when they got eliminated. They also saw firsthand what Tampa Bay was doing (even more extreme with their "opener" strategy), and while the Rays failed to make the playoffs, they exceeded predictions by a sizable margin with their bullpen strategy. I remember when Ramos first started being the first "out getter, and it was pretty universally mocked on the sports talk shows. Yet I THINK they had the best record in baseball the rest of the way. Of course Snell being a beast and several other things played a bigger role, but the point was that it didn't backfire like most of the "experts" said. And I'm talking about like Woody Paige and Skip Bayless. So there isn't a bright enough shade of blue for the word "expert" there. -
Yankees signing Ottavino, 3 Years - $27m
HiAndTight replied to JDBrewCrew's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I don't think that means they're overpaying. I hate the Yankees, but I like this type of thinking. They've got some small holes here or there, but they're making their strongest area even stronger(though Britton was a dumb move unless they can somehow make him miss more bats in the zone). I was kinda hoping that the Brewers would end up with him on a cheap deal. I knew it was irrational so I never even mentioned it....but I was holding out hope for either him or Miller. The latter got more than I'd have been comfortable giving him and the prior was likely always going to be able to get this type of deal. Still, when you look at what he did, I do think this qualifies as a bit of a bargain relative to free agency and what he did in Coors last year. -
Never claimed I predicted those acquisitions. I said those were the guys I wanted. As for predicting some of their changes to how they use their staff, you could easily look that up in last year's free agency debates about adding a starting pitcher. Are you aware of Kidd's history? Drunk-driving, wife-beating, kicking teammates in the head at Cal, the Lawrence Frank incident, sleeping with his own teammate's gf behind his back in Dallas? I think you're in over your head here. Saying "Kidd is not terrible" should have tipped me off right away. Are YOU aware of what the word scociopath means? Let me tell you what it DOESN'T mean. Arguments with your assistant coach, a drunk driving which in Wisconsin is a municipal ticket, sleeping with another guys Girl Friend or rumors of fighting in college. That's commonly refered to as dime store psychologist who in this case is going to absurd extremes to make their point by using every accusation against a guy from the time he was 18 through 43 because you're trying to argue he's a terrible coach. I think YOU telling me I'm in over my head here is laughable.
-
He's not guarding the other team's best players very often. Bledsoe guards the best guards and Khris guards guys like Kawhi and Durant. He would be easier to replace than those two. He's shooting and scoring? LOL, that's like ignoring WAR and looking at runs or RBI's. He's good, but he's not the 2nd-best guy on the team. He's way behind Bledsoe, Lopez, Khris, and of course Giannis in RPM. He's even a tick below Hill, albeit in a small sample (that basically means the Bucks struggle more when any of the other starters come out of the game, but don't suffer when Brogdon comes out, although there are conflating variables of course). His contributions aren't that hard to replace. As for Wilson, I think he's literally quicker than Brogdon on defense (not just quicker for a big man but literally quicker) with legit center size and strength and possibly comparable shooting at a position where it's much harder to find good shooting. He also has a small fraction of the experience Brogdon does. He started playing at a late age, had a stress fracture in high school, underwent extensive rehabilitation for biomechanics in college, and missed time in college with ankle injuries. He has a much higher ceiling than Brogdon. A-Who said he would defend Kevin Durant? Is he suddenly a backcourt player? B-Being a 40/50/90 guy is nothing CLOSE to the same as using RBI's as a barometer for a baseball player. C-Wilson's not quicker than Brogdon. D-Never said he WAS the best player on the team other than Giannis. E-I don't care how much time Wilson missed. When did this become a referendum on Wilson vs Brogdon? This was originally about who we should prioritize re-signing and if he's BECOMING the 2nd best player on the team. You can keep taking things I haven't said to argue with, but I'm not sure what purpose that's serving other than you becoming less reasonable in this thread. But fine, Brogdon is not great, he's easy to replace and Kidd's a sociopath......where exactly is that "ignore" button fellas?
-
How anyone can watch what's happening and not conclude Kidd was terrible is beyond me. He's an arrogant, stubborn sociopath whose personality has poisoned every city he's been in at some point. When he was playing, his talent made up for it. Coaching? Not so much. Not missing that isoball offense at all. Yeah....and this is where I'm just...out. There's ridiculous(claiming you predicted the Cain, Yellich and then Grandal acquisitions as well as how the Brewers would eventually use their pitching staff in the post-season a full off-season before)...that I can just ignore and move past. Then there's this....just absolutely ridiculous level of hyperbole. Have you ever met the guy? Don't answer, it's rhetorical. I'm just wondering how you can conclude a guy is a "sociopath," from "watching." Unless you're not talking about basketball. Nevermind you said that coaches don't get credit for players improving, becuase improving your skills playing basketball is just a matter of doing something over and over again(ie, Rote). So developing young players doesn't even take coaching apparently. All they need to do is shoot a certain number of shots a day and repeat the same things over and over and then they're good.

Packers Roster Analysis - Building for the Future
HiAndTight replied to CheezWizHed's topic in Other Sports
I don't know. To me it seems like they simply replaced Hundley with a younger, more contractually-controllable version of Hundley. Maybe there is something there with Kizer that can be unlocked, but right now based on his time with the Browns and the albeit very small sample we saw of him in the preseason and regular season, he's an athletically gifted QB who looks like he's in way over his head in the mental part of the game. He's still very young, though, so that may improve. It didn't with Hundley, though. He does absolutely look like he's in way over his head. But given the complexities of playing the position and given that he doesn't get first string reps, AND that he's had 4 different offensive systems in 4 years, I think that's to be expected. I think the NFL ruins too many talented QB's a number of ways. If he were given a chance to sit for a couple years behind Rodgers and work with a good QB coach like Rodgers had with Clement and McCarthy, I think he'd be a very capable NFL QB. He's certainly not there yet, but I don't think anyone they draft is going to be at this point given that they'd likely be drafting that QB in the middle rounds. We're certainly not going to be looking for the heir apparent to Arod at this point given that he's made no secret of his desire to play into his 40's(or at least through the age of 40 more recently). I wouldn't be looking to use a top pick on a QB for another 2-3 years at least. So until then you're just looking for a backup. I still believe Kizer can be that guy. Though I certainly understand why people would disagree with that opinion given his performacne to date.
