Apparently, per 1250, the Brewers are attempting to contact Segura to find out if he has any idea when he may be back. Sounds like they really don't have any idea right now. Given the situation, I'm fine with Bianchi and Herrera for as long as Seggy needs to get everything taken care of.

He has 5 HR's this year. How big of an impact is that 4.9 pct difference going to have on his .833 OPS? Doesn't look like much of his power is coming from HR's. It's not like his BABIP is out of line. It's actually lower this year(by an insignificant amount) than over his career. I think sometimes we look a little too hard. He'd be a 4th OF'er and a LH'ed bat and likely wouldn't cost much. Seems like he checks a lot of boxes we could use.

You didn't believe he was going to be an upgrade over Lyle Overbay back in April and May? Perhaps you didn't, but you were in the vast minority at the time. I certainly thought he would be and I still do moving forward. Many posters believed it was a foregone conclusion he'd end up in Milwaukee while many others were just concerned that he'd want too many years or too much money for us to be able to afford it. I'm not saying there wasn't a couple here and there who didn't think he'd be an upgrade..just that looking back in this thread, I don't see many of them.

I'm sure the Reds realized at the time of the deal that they weren't going to get good value the last year or 3 of the deal. And Votto is having a bad year by his measure and has been playing hurt. Yet he still has been pretty damn good. As of 2 weeks ago his line was .273/.410/.443 with a OPS of .853. He was obviously hurting as of late, but even now he's still got a .390 OBP and a .800 OPS. 25 million for a 40 year old is almost never going to work out great, but in 9-10 years, the top AAV for players will likely start with a 4. So unless you believe Votto is going to never come back and be the guy he was last year or his entire career, I doubt it's going to cripple the Reds to this degree.

Agreed. Maybe enough to miss next week's contests? Hopefully enough to knock him out for as long as Kelly was down.
-
No, what's GARBAGE, is that he threw him the pitches, and only after he gives up the 3 runs and costs his team the game does he come out and ADMIT that he did that basically taking credit away from Jeter and the blame away from himself. I just can't stand the entire organization. I don't have any issue with grooving a pitch for Jeter or for Ripken...but shut up after the fact.
-
He'd rather play meaningless games on a last place team than contribute on a contender? I think he'd choose the latter. I think he was trying to make a joke Briggs. What with the 2 kids and half his salary comment. I doubt he'd even think about it, or have a say in the matter at this point in his career.

I'm sure that had something to do with it, but he was traded long after he had started with the whole Islam thing. He started it while he was at UCLA. I'm not sure when he officially became a member, but I also know the first "teacher," he had was a nut who controlled his life. Anyway....I guess it's hard for me to really understand. I suppose if Aaron Rodgers left the Packers after winning the MVP and then came back 4 years later, that would be similar to LeBron. Favre....we won without him. But the hatred would be similar. And I do still have a strong disdain for Favre.

I wasn't either, but he was pretty critical of Milwaukee from what I can recall at the time. In fact, I thought he burned some bridges pretty good on his way out of here. But I don't know, Molitor was mentioned as was Prince and I wasn't upset with either player when they left, so I was just trying to find someone who had as big of a profile. And remember, Kareem forced his way out. LeBron just left as a FA. I think if that played out now, Kareem would be a pretty despised player in Milwaukee. This is what he had to say about Milwaukee; I've also read/heard that he thought Milwaukee was a racist place...though I would think most places were pretty racist in the 70's, but he also had some issues with white people. Again, I wasn't born until more than a decade after he left, so this is all just what I've heard and or read in the past.

Who didn't think Morales was going to be an upgrade? I believe almost everyone did, and I'd be curious as to why someone wouldn't have thought that. All you have to do is go back on this very thread and there were pages and pages regarding Morales. The only arguments against getting him were, 1-He was likely going to cost too much because TOO many teams were targeting him, in particular the Yankees. 2-He would demand a multi year deal. 3-He might start slow because he didn't have ST'ing(*that one seems to be the most accurate since we're talking about 33 games). Morales had put up an OPS near .790 the past two years playing last year in Seattle a very pitcher friendly park, hit 45 HR's and had a BA of .275, AND is a left handed hitter. He had a 2.9 WAR last year vs Reynolds 1 WAR and Overbay's .6 WAR. So 2.9 WAR in 154 games vs 1.6 WAR in 277 games combined. And of course Morales was the youngest of the 3.

The "This Cost Us the Playoffs in 2014" thread
HiAndTight replied to lcbj68c's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I think Roenicke has used the BP very well actually. Of course when Kintzler came in and blew games people were baffled as to why he was in there. Now that Smith has done that a few times, he's taking heat for that as well. But I think that's just how fans react. As for your argument that if they view him as a starter, then 87 innings shouldn't be a concern, I don't agree. How they arrive at those innings is so different, I think it really strains their arm. He's not getting the rest he's used to. He's getting up on occasion(though I think when RR has gotten him up and we'd added runs on, he's let him come into the game anyway) and then setting down. And he's pitching in 3-4 days in a row. I think it takes a while for your arm to get used to that. Some pitchers have no trouble. Some like Thornburg do. Of course Thornburg may have had issues either way this year. This is what is maddening about pitching and injuries. -
They could trade Gallardo and with Weeks gone, Lohse the following year, they could absolutely do it. No they couldn't. Unless the payroll was raised to about 120million annually. By then Kintzler, Peralta, Gennett, Davis, and a host of others will get aribitration raises virtually nullifying any savigs we had with Rickie Weeks. Brauns contract starts to climb as well and regarding next season it looks as though we have no choice to pick up the options on Gallardo and Ramirez. I guess Mark A. could splurge even further, but I find that highly improbable and it definately would be unprecedented in Milwaukee. Hasn't that been the case over the past 5-10 years since we've gone from a payroll of 27 million to one that could easily reach 110 this year? Ramirez 16 million Weeks 11 million Gallardo 13 million Lohse 11 million And that money is going to be made up by Braun's salary going up, Brandon Kintzler and several other people who will be in their 1st or 2nd year of arbitration? How much do you think Kintzler is going to get in arbitration? Braun is going to make 12 million as opposed to 10 next year. Kintlzer doesn't look like he's going to be getting a hefty raise. Peralta, Davis, Gennett, none of them are hitting arbitration next year. So no, Weeks contract is not going to be nullified by those raises next year. Then the following year we'd have several other contracts coming off the books. And if we did trade for Hamels(again, I don't believe we should because of the prospects we'd have to give up, but if) we why would we be forced to do anything with Gallardo? Put it this way. Keep the exact same team, just exchange Hamels and Nelson(and if you'd like, Fiers) for the salaries of Gallardo, Lohse and Estrada. That's certainly one way we could make it work. Hamels and Nelson(and Fiers) would be CHEAPER than this years trio of Gallardo(11.25), Lohse(11) and Estrada(3.25). So I fail to see how there is "no way," we COULD make it work moving forward when those players contracts will be off the books along with several others simply because of some arbitration raises coming down the road. And by the way, until MLB's TV bubble bursts(And it will IMO, just not in the very near future) 120 million in 2016-17-18 is hardly going to be an outrageous figure for the Brewers. But again, they wouldn't even need to push it that far for the sake of this discussion. You could argue we need money to sign FA's at 3rd or 1st, or we need to keep payroll flexibility. Not that we couldn't absorb Hamels contract for 4 years without significantly raising our payroll as our roster is currently constituted. None of this is to say that I think we should trade for Hamels. I don't want to give up the players it take to get him. But I think if he were a FA and the Brewers could sign him for 4 years 90 million, they'd jump on that.

I might consider trading Yo, but that would be the extent of the selling I'd do. Gomez is part of the future. At some point, you have to stop looking at trying to get 6 years out of a guy and be happy with 3 really exceptional years. The fact is you're usually going to spend those first couple years getting that player to perform well, so you'd perpetually be in this cycle. I would have said yes to all of them depending on the return at the start of the season, but the Brewers are in first place, their top contender just lost it's best position player, and while we don't have a legit ace, any of the guys we put out there are capable of dominating a game. I could see Lohse, Peralta, or Garza having an outstanding playoff run. So many things can happen in a short series, I just couldn't get on board with selling right now. Plus, we are really building our system back up right now. We've been very aggressive and are having more success than expected from our young guys.
-
How about Kareem? If he forced his way out but tried coming back 4 years later? There is no perfect comparison, but that one has to be as close as Milwaukee can come. The best player in the game, would have almost certainly brought the Bucks more championships.

I never understood the LeBron hate when he left. He took less money for a better chance to win a championship. Isn't that what fans want out of athletes, to put winning over money? Since when did "fans," ever become one group that unilaterally wanted anything? I'll tell you what they generally DON'T want however. 1-If you grew up 40 minutes away from the city you're drafted to and you have a 4 story sign that says, "the chosen one," that's part of your ad campaign(or we are all witnesses, whatever) they expect loyalty. 2-They DON'T like you making a spectacle and shoving it in the face of the team you're leaving destroyed by going on ESPN and announcing you're "taking your talents to South Beach," after the #2 FA just signed there to put 3 of the top 8-10 players on the same team(And Bosh was absolutely one of the top 10 at the time). And do you REALLY not understand the LeBron hate? I just can't imagine any fan truly not understanding why Cleveland fans were upset. I have to believe you're feigning ignorance here. It's just such a natural reaction. The BEST player in the league left their team after PROMISING to bring them a Championship. And he was a hometown boy. Just use common sense instead of trying to make a logical argument. You REALLY can't understand why they would be upset with him over that move? To me, I would be astounded if all the sudden a large group of sports fans decided, "hey, the best player since Jordan who grew up 40 miles away and made promises left, and he did it in the most obnoxious way possible....but good for him, he choose to collaborate with the best SG(arguably) and one of the best big men in the league to win championships."
-
Don't let your opinions cloud the rules however. He would have to be injured again in September if they don't want him on the playoff roster if there is nobody else on the DL at August 31. You honestly believe the Brewers aren't going to leave themselves any options and are going to go with Wang in the post-season? His opinion isn't clouding the rules. Wang will not be on the Brewers post-season roster. Guarantees and absolute statements are a pet peeve of mine, but I'm willing to make one here. Wang=NOT ON POST-SEASON ROSTER. He'll obviously be among the players who are eligible for the post season roster when the Brewers submit their lists by the 31st, but he will NOT occupy a spot on the playoff roster. Johnny Davis in A ball has a better chance to be on the post-season roster as a pinch runner than Wang does as a reliever. So no, I would NOT fret about it either.

Brewers interested in Seattle RHP Erasmo Ramirez
HiAndTight replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
Seattle is the exact type of place where Estrada could still be a useful starting pitcher. And they're a competitive team. I'm not positive how their rotation is lining up right now, the health of Walker/Paxton, two elite young arms is in question. Walker is back I believe and Paxton is starting rehab soon. But he could still be a serviceable starter for them in that park for the time being. -
Jeremy Jeffress 14 pitches 11 strikes 1 IP 1 H 0 ER ERA 1.59 Henderson, Thornburg both rehabbing. 3 reasons for optimism. 3 potential late inning right handed relievers. I am NOT among those who believe RR handles the BP poorly. I think he does well. With the potential versatility of having 4 good right handed relievers to go with Duke, Smith, and Gorz, we could really shorten games. IF/WHEN we get healthy.

Wow. Yeah, I have to agree with the last two comments. That Jimmy Nelson came up and didn't continue to dominate like he had previously for the Brewers or for the Sounds is telling. It certainly means that he's scared. It also means we might as well have started Estrada because...hey, we lost. Nelson is going to be fine.

2014 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 21-40
HiAndTight replied to 1992casey's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
Sure would be nice to see the Brewers sign him. Dominating the cape league like he has, plus the fact that he's taken 2 years off and his arm hasn't been abused in the slightest, yet he's still got an advanced approach to the game? There is a lot to like there. -
I'd be willing to give up more for Hamels than Price. Price will be a FA after next year. IF we were going to make this type of huge move(and again, I agree we should not) I'd prefer, as always, we give ourselves a 3-4 year window. I think most teams would. So you get a similar pitcher for less than half the FA salary that Price will demand(in terms of years and total money). If Hamels was on the market right now and it took 4 years and 90 million to sign him, I think most teams would be willing to give him that. Price on the other hand, nobody knows what it's going to take. 8 years 200? The top salaries have exploded for pitchers in the last couple years, so the Phillies would and should want a kings ransom for him.

Jean Segura's nine month old son passes away
HiAndTight replied to crossface21's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
My cousin went through something similar. She found out her child had very serious developmental issues and if he survived birth would not live long. It was recommended that she terminate the pregnancy. She never gave it a thought. Even though she knew what was going to happen, I've never seen two people(her and her Husband) so.......devastated. I can't even fathom what he's going through right now. -
I just don't agree. Segura turned the deal down. His agent may have said you can wait and you might earn more money, but his agent works for him. Other players have taken deals and other players have turned down deals. He's 24 years old. I think it's safe to say that it's definitively too early to draw a conclusion on the decision he made. Yes, and I don't like to state things that are not fact as though they are. I should have said I think there is an VERY-VERY good chance he could sign(at least) a deal that would guarantee him 10 million dollars right now. No, it was a 4 year guaranteed deal with 2 option years. So no, I'm not saying anything close to that. I'm saying that Escobar who had not hit at all signed a deal worth a guaranteed 10 million dollars close to the same point Segura is at now WITH two option years. Perhaps that's because you misunderstood Escobar's contract. He signed a 4 year deal with team options in his FA years. It's actually a deal that he was criticized for taking for being below market value, but since people seem to believe that Segura is one hammstring injury from being completely out of the game, I was trying to add some context. I would assume most people who don't play baseball would say the same thing. I wouldn't. But that's fine. I think Escobar signed a very bad deal. But again, my point was that Segura, barring some catastrophic injury, is likely going to be in the game for a very long time, this years slump notwithstanding.
