  1. In other words, the cancel culture is much more entrenched so ruining a person's life and career over an offhand word or two is much more accepted. I'm not defending what he said, but he didn't assault anyone. I really have a strong disdain for the words "cancel culture." "For people who are in favor of it, for people who actually say, "lets cancel" a certain celebrity because they did blackface on SNL 20 years ago. It's just an annoying words that IMO has come about because twitter and people on twitter think(perhaps correctly so) they have FAR too much power and influence in the world and whatever offends their delicate sensibilities should offend everyone's and therefore we should "cancel" that person. I don't really see this as "canceling" him so much as his bosses...who run businesses know what he said was offensive, they know that a portion of their audience is going to be disgusted(though not a large enough portion from the Reds Message Boards I've read) and they're making a decision...not because people on twitter are telling them to, but because it's just basic common sense. Also...he DID verbally assault a whole group of people. But yeah, it'st a false comparison to try and equate a player using homophobic slurs and the light sentence he got vs a play-by-play guy using a homophobic slur and then trying to draw some connection to "cancel culture" in this country. Announcers have been getting fired for the ignorant things they've been saying on air for decades and there usually isn't a whole lot of wiggle room.
  2. What Jackson said was just SOO much more ignorant...and in a way that makes it so much LESS harmful. He didn't know what he was saying, the whole thing there is a mess. But two points. A-Athletes are going to be able to get away with saying much-much more. Riley Cooper dropped the N-bomb in a very aggressive way and was suspended a week(From practice during camp) and then got a 3 year extension). B-On air personality, their entire job is to be refined speakers. To be inordinately articulate. You don't expect that out of every professional athlete. Some are...some are not. So I wouldn't compare a player and an athlete to begin with even ignoring the players unions and other reasons why you can come back from that. But just in this specific case, it really sounded like Jackson was just spewing some ignorant nonsense he'd heard someone else say and was just...ignorant about the actual context of what he was saying.
  3. Give me a break. What break would you like? I've had to work with people who see another white guy and think it's perfectly alright to just start using these types of awful slurs. It's obnoxious if he's using hate speech all the time and just assuming everyone else at his place of work is alright with it because his ego is SO large that he just assumes most people think like he does. I mean...that might be a bit dramatic since we don't know how he talks on a daily basis, but I think the assumption is if you're that lose when you're about to go on air and you have a mic on, you're probably a REAL clown after 3-4 beers after the game or on the road trips. And I'm sure there are gay people working there. It's almost kinda funny(if it weren't so insulting) the way people of his ilk think about Gay people. As If they're all marching down a gay pride parade wearing the chaps and leather and playing up that stereotype to a 10. MOST gay guys I know...you'd have zero clue(and for a REAL good friend I grew up playing FB and BB with who is ~6'2 220 and was a helluva MLB'er) he'd really put the stereotype on it's head. So I'm assuming the "give me a break" was because you don't actually think it's that big of a problem working with him...and that MAY be true if he isn't like that normally, but if he is, I'll bet he's been homophobic in front of at LEAST a couple gay men who work there and I'm sure that is extremely harmful to those people.
  4. Yeah, I'm completely with you...a couple years older, but we used that word CONSTANTLY. Just the one sylable, not the two. And to me that genuinely took away the homophobic aspect of it and just made it another type of insult entirely. Louie CK is certainly not a shinning beacon for how one should act, BUT he does have a whole joke about this that was HUGE because it did resonate with a lot of people. But the thing here.....A, you're an adult, you're 58 years old and you're in media. You have to be pretty obtuse to NOT know that it's rooted in hate. And B-EVEN if you were trying to use the "logic" that me and all my friends used back in HS, that it wasn't about being gay, it was about being annoying or soft or whatever(and there were a couple gay guys we hung around with who'd hurl it back at us...for what little that is worth) don't pretend you don't actually know what the word means or that it's rooted in hate. Even if you're using it differently. Long story short, I could get past someone saying THOSE exact words and coming back at some point if he'd said them in a very different way, but the way that he said them and to then pretend you're just totally ignorant about the hatred behind them. That's...more gauling.
  5. I was never on the fence. I was a BIT on the fence if he should ever be allowed to call games again or what the punishment should be. I do think there needs to be SOME room for people to improve themselves and try to be redeemed and given a 2nd chance. Good strong chance though that anyone who's still on the fence about whether or not what he said was wrong...they already like Schilling and that's not gonna push them off of it!
  6. Why does it matter? Whatever he says is obviously nothing more than attempted damage control at that point. An apology is fine when you have a slip of the tongue on the air or make a joke that you later realize is in bad taste, both of which happen. This is nothing like that, what was said was fully intended and he obviously believes it so I don't really know what the point of any apology is as it is meaningless. Fair point. I think my thought is that you should at least make the apology sound sincere rather than a carefully worded spin attempt. I looked at it as just the opposite. He was likely told that he was being taken off the air, the tone was as important to me and it felt the opposite of a carefully worded spin. It sounded like a man who was genuinely sorry. Sorry he'd been caught or sorry he'd said something hurtful, I don't know, but it sounded better than one of those press releases that have no personality to them at all.
  7. You're certainly not alone in saying it was a weak apology...but what would have been a strong one? I actually thought...given what he said, his apology was a pretty solid one. Not that it'd change anything, but is there an apology you can make after that-that would be considered good?
  8. Same here....but I feel like it'd be just as bad if I made a guess. This really is just mind blowing. Not like he's new to this gig. And even if he was, not like he didn't grow up around it. How are you not more aware that the mic could be hot?
  9. Didn't he suggest playing in the "most Southern stadiums first?" Like the first two weeks would be in the most Southern Stadiums? Beacuse it's a balmy 30 degrees in NeBraska? I mean...maybe Maryland is warmer(I'd assume). And I don't know if Lincoln is further South than say Columbus or Springfield, it just feels like it is and if it isn't...I'm sure the difference is negligible and it's not gonna be warm in those places either.
  10. I think anyone who thinks they can predict what's going to happen in another 6-9 months with ANY level of confidence is also kidding themselves. You have the entire world working on making one vaccine at the moment.
  11. Hill hit 46 pct of his 3's Middleton JUST barely missed a 50/40/90 season Korver hit over 40 pct. Matthews 36 pct. Bled hit 34 pct. Slightly below average. And they have bigs who can shoot Ersan has been extremely consistent at 36.5 pct for his career and is right around there again this year. Lopez-Didn't he smash Dirk's record for most 3's made by a 7 footer in a season last year? So he's not shooting it at a great clip for a SG, but he's a proven shooter for a big man. That looks like enough shooters to be effective to me.
  12. Beal would be just about the ideal fit on this team...but what would that take? DiVincezo to really break out next year and become a star and then trade him and Bledsoe's non-guaranteed salary for the following year? I don't agree either that Giannis is the problem or that he demands the ball. I think he'd be thrilled to have someone else who could take more of the load off of him. I think he knows...as does everyone else, he's the best option by far.
  13. Good read about the injury Burks dealt with last year. https://www.espn.com/blog/green-bay-packers/post/_/id/49378/third-times-the-injury-free-charm-for-packers-linebacker-oren-burks Hopefully we get a Kevin King like 3rd year resurgence out of him as I don't think there will be a 4th otherwise.
  14. Also took J'Mon Moore in the 4th round that draft. Oof....that's true. I tried to forget about him. I didn't like him at all. And they did try to sign Allen Robinson.
  15. I think the pressure is more on the front office and Horst than on Bud. I may be wrong, but the owners weren't in total agreement about him in the first place and I really don't know what Bud is expected to do with this team. This team is really only missing one thing IMO and it's a 2nd guy who can take someone of the dribble and get to the rim, score or kick it out. Bledsoe has all the ability in the world to be that guy but when we get to the playoffs, instead of going up and drawing contact and staying under control, he totally out of control, flailing and either turns it over or he misses badly. I just have lost all confidence he's ever going to figure it out. And it's going to take a very creative GM to try and get an impact player here. You're left with the MLE that you can sign a guy for ~4/40 and a bi-annual and little more. We've got the shooters, we've got length, we're only lacking that 2nd playmaker. Giannis can't do it all by himself...and Middleton is better with his back against the bucket in the mid range game or as a spot up shooter. He's a really nice player, but not the penetrator we need. So they've got to figure out how to get it done with who they've got now and that means playing much better defense, getting going earlier and then of course knocking down the open shots that come with some fast break oppurtunities. I think they'll win the next 4 vs Orlando....but given what we've seen since the shutdown, I'm not sure it's more than a coin flip at this point in a potential series vs the Heat. I do think you're right about home court or the lack of really hurting the Bucks. If these were normal playoffs, you'd have game 1 at thome at 7 PM, you'd have the place going nuts and I think obviously that would translate to the court. But I mean...c'mon. We've still gotta be good enough to be able to beat a team like Orlando even in the sterile like atmosphere that is the bubble.
  16. I was pretty defeated after Game 1 vs Boston last year...I really thought Boston had a chance to slow down Giannis with Horford and the wings to be able to score. Today's game...they just looked flat. I don't even think their offense was the problem as much as the defense. The Bucks just haven't been playing as hard defensively. When they do, they get some fast break points, that takes the pressure off the half court game and it changes everything. But they're not what...4-10 in their last 14. It's not time to panic obviously...but it'd pretty damn alarming. I can't see them losing in the 1st round, but I could see a round 2 loss vs the Heat if they don't start to gel and get back to where they were earlier this season. I really don't want to think about the Bucks heading into next year with Giannis due to become a FA having gone backwards thereby putting even more pressure on the team.
  17. I didn't care about it beacuse we had Jones. I'd be shocked if Jones starts 16 games next year again. I would plan on him missing a handful, so I was hoping we'd get a RB at some point. It was more that I didn't know much about Dillon and this was supposed to be a REALLY weak class for RB's after the top 4-5 and he was It was more about just wanting to see a WR'er who could come in and help. Mimms had just gone off the board, I was looking at someone like Duvernay who might not be all that well rounded, but who has the speed to make an impact right away. And sure, lots of physical freaks don't end up doing anything in the NFL...but they usually don't have the resume of a guy like Dillon. By now I think it's become apparent that Gute and Lafleur have a "type" that they look for in WRs, and players like Devin Duvernay just aren't it. They want those big, tall guys with huge catch radiuses ... even in the slot. There were several WRs that fit that bill, but the top guys were taken by the time the Packers were on the clock, and the 2nd tier of them wasn't good enough to warrant a selection in the top two rounds. I think if Mims would have been there, he'd be a Packer. I too was disappointed that they didn't grab a WR, but watching the way the board fell, it was understandable why they did what they did. I'm not really convinced that's the case. I don't know that you can gleen much from LaFleur's time here. They tried to trade for Emanuel Sanders last year. That certainly doesn't disprove your theory, but he also doesn't fit it. They just haven't invested much capital in the WR'er position since he's gotten here. Their WR'er roster was what it was pretty much by default. It was the same group McCarthy's last year for the most part. And sure, Gute did grab MVS and EQ, but...again, he picked them in the 5th and 6th IIRC? I certainly hope they're not just writing off guys LIKE AB, Hill, Mecole Hardman....smaller, athletic guys with great speed. I'd like to believe that if a Henry Ruggs would have been available to them, they'd have picked him up(maybe not over Love since they seemed to love-Love). Hey...maybe the Packers start 1-4, the season gets suspended, they end up with the 5th pick and they grab Jamar Chase and have a ready made #1 right out of the gate! He'd have been the top Wr'er off the board this year according to most...
  18. How was most of that 2018 team's success thanks to what he started with? Wasn't HE responsible for the trade of Yelich, the trades that brought the players he traded Yelich for, the signing of Cain... Who were the significant pieces on that team that he started with vs the players who he acquired?
  19. 20. Taylor's going to be the best back in this class if he can get the fumbling under control. I knew he was going to go in a spot that was unrealistic for us....too early for a 1st, wouldn't last until the 2nd, but his patience, his vision and then just the physical abilities. I think he's going to be a monster in the NFL.
  21. I actually think the offense is going to be a bit better than last year...just being in the 2nd year of it, hopefully one of the two young guys, MVS or EQ finally breaks out. Overall I think the Defense will likely regress and not get many picks and the team will probably have a worse record. But the offense should be interesting.
  22. I like Arcia more than most people. I just don't believe you can look at the defensive metrics with all the shifting(and he had been hitting well this year coming in with a .300 avg)...BUT, Urias and Keston up the middle...that's gonna be a fun combo for the next ~6 years. You could pretty realistically have 2 guys hitting ~.300 playing SS and 2B. For the time being, I like the idea of Urias being able to play 2nd, 3rd and SS.
  23. 1,000 DEATHS per day. Not just cases.
  24. Agreed...completely. To me this was a sign of his frustration. Frustration that they're on a pretty bad run that pre-dates the bubble winning 4 of their last 13 and that Giannis himself is constantly getting hacked out there, but because he's so much bigger and more physical, he doesn't get the calls that perhaps he should. I remember Shag losing his mind and throwing a wild punch...and I don't think anyone thought or thinks Shaq is a bad guy or has some character flaws. Sports obviously get very intense and Giannis is the player he is because he has an ALMOST Jordan like tenacity that he plays with...so it's not a shock that he'd get emotional at times. Lets ask this...if Donic did the same thing...would people be talking about it? Of course. Though I'm far MORE convinced that it's not a sign of any flaw in Giannis than I would be with basically any other player in the league given how earnest and genuine he's been so far in his career. Maybe he does a complete 180 and we see him going into the stands taking out rows of people with a single swing...but I kinda doubt it and think the apolgetic version of Giannis after the game is a better indicator of what he's like moving forward.
  25. This seems like a ridiculous thing to ask. What conversation? NOBODY was talking about our MVP-Superstar who got ejected for head butting someone until someone said...basically 'why is nobody talking about this.' And then added, "hope he doesn't turn out to be an idiot," a comment in which not one person agreed with and in and of itself also has nothing to do with race. It WAS a significant event and Giannis is an emotional player. That said I can't fathom how you could suggest that this is being talked about because he's not white. I haven't seen any evidence of racism on this forum(not saying it hasn't happened, but I haven't seen it) and I have no idea why it'd begin now? I don't see how it's unfair or even dog whistle type racism to actaully talk about it. Giannis is one of the most beloved players in the NBA and he's certainly loved in Milwaukee like no other player I can recall. Maybe Ray Allen was loved...but not like Giannis. This seems like the type of topic that you'd talk about on a forum dedicated to a State's sports team no matter who the player was or what the sport was. If anything, I think the question should be, "does Giannis only get 1 game if he's not an MVP." The penalty was a bit light. There was a significant flop, but he did try to headbut someone and I think you get 2 games or more for that if it's a normal player and the playoffs aren't starting.
