I wasn't a big fan of this pick at the time, but when you read about how he faced 8 or 9 man fronts far more often than Johnathon Tayor...who it seemed was ONLY facing 8 man fronts or any other back in the draft...and how he just ran over people, and it's hard to not get excited. And now you look at this picture....this dude is ridiculously big. And he's fast. With Rodgers at QB, you're not going to have many 8 or 9 man fronts. I skeptical of this team in general this year, but I do think they've got a chance to be a better offensive team as they transition from a pass heavy team to a run heavy team.

...who's still only 24 years old. At the very least, the Packers are still paying for his prime years. I'm not upset. Just saying. That's a lotta dollars. Hope it works out. The Packers signed Reggie White for 4 years and...17 million. Total. The most coveted FA of all time up until that point(and likely since) and the greatest DL in NFL history(the best defensive player in NFL history IMO). And now a NT is getting more per year than he got for his FOUR years. But that's how the NFL goes. Or at least how it was going before Covid decided the Cap was going up too much and they needed to knee cap it! I love it. I'm confident he's going to be a guy who keeps the same energy he's been bringing. This isn't a Cledius Hunt type signing or a Johnny Jolly. Now...for the love of God, get a big 3 technique who can eat up some blockers so Clark can abuse NT's and Kirksey can make some plays!

...who's still only 24 years old. At the very least, the Packers are still paying for his prime years. He could actually get another big deal after this one if he stays healthy. Grady Jarrett got 4/68 at 26 years old. It's a lot of money, but the way he dominates at times...it's pretty close to what I thought he'd get. If I could change one thing, I'd like to see the Packers sign longer term deals. You add 2 more years at ~25 million. Just makes the cap far more manegable. The way the Cowboys work the cap. They're able to pay just about everyone. Tyron Smith for example...he signed that 8 year 100 million dollar deal that was just considered crazy at the time. Well..8 years, 10 million signing bonus, cap hit this year is ~13 million and the cap hit would be 5.5 million. If you know you've got a guy who's a long term starter...it just makes more sense to go a little longer. Bahktiari for example..two years later they signed him for 4/68 with a 15 million dollar signing bonus. If it's a premiere position, chances are the AAV is going to keep on inceasing with the only exceptions I know of are for RB's and now maybe due to this crazy Covid situation that NOBODY could have foreseen. So for a 24 year old stud NT...would have turned down 7/122 with a 28 million dollar signing bonus? I understand the Packers like to keep their books clean and it makes sense, but if we're worried about being up against the cap, it's a pretty simple solution. Especially considering it's not like the Packers are hurting for Cash. AND I think it'd save you money...like with Bahk. He's going to get 20+ per year next year on a new likely 4 year deal.

Has anyone lost confidence in Stearns

I think at least some of that is the lack of fans in the stadiums and then obviously when you're not hitting well, you're not really having a lot of fun. Aguilar's energy was negligible last year when he wasn't producing. I do agree with the premise though. LA players TEND to play with a little more flair, to be more outgoing. I loved watching Gomez play the game...yet he was pretty well hated by many teams around the league for his "antics." I think we need to see how the rest of the season plays out as I think there is still a lot of personality on this team. Of course it's not just the Latin American players...Lo Cain opting out hurt us a lot in this area as well. But if they can get on a roll, I think we'll start seeing them having more fun in the dugout as we have in the past few seasons. -
He's 7 years into his career. I think we know who he is. He's been getting hammered constantly, not to mention getting kicked in the nuts. I think he's been pretty restrained, save for the little head "tap." It looked much worse in real time though. It looked like he got him much better. Definitely stupid, but I don't think it's any harbinger of things to come with Giannis.

Has anyone lost confidence in Stearns

Many of the team's top prospects have been traded off the last few seasons to keep those teams in contention. The state of the system right now is the price you pay for that. I don't even think the state of our system right now is bad. We lack the assets to make significant trades, but we keep churning out solid major league players. I'm confident Small will be up and contributing in a year or two, Rassmussen could be a elite closer...we've got pitching depth and we do have two elite prospects. Turang and Mitchell. One in his first year of pro ball put up ~300/400 line most of the year in Appleton and the other is already the 69th ranked prospect. It's not great for going out and getting another Yelich, but it's not NEARLY as bad as it looks. Then factor in the young guys we have. Hirua, Urias, Burnes, Peralta, Houser, Williams...all good young players to varying degrees who were either in our system last season or acquired by players in our system last year....when it was considered to be an awful system as well. I'd also point out that we're 2 games out of a WC spot...if there weren't expanded playoffs this year. So even if this was a NORMAL year...like the past few when we've gone on runs to get into the playoffs, even THEN, we'd still be a whole 2 games out. But as has been pointed out, it's not a normal season. It's a weird, 17 game sample size. So no, I'm not losing faith in Stearns. I have ZERO issues with what they did in the off-season. I was actually a fan of most of the moves. -

I really doubt the Dodgers consider trading Lux for Hader. -
Lorenzo Cain opts out for remainder of 2020 season
HiAndTight replied to Eye Black's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I'm sure he'd be interested in joining a SD team that's just starting to bust out. They don't really have much of a DH. The Giants absolutely LOVE players like Ryan Braun...AZ seems to be sorta half in and half out of trying to win. For a year though...I could see him going to any number of places that have a chance to win. He doesn't need to just go somewhere he already owns a home. I would think winning a World Series would be the most important thing to Braun at this point. If that's the case...SD looks like the most best option for next year and hell, I don't think we're a far fetched choice either. I love the cheap guys that Stearns brought in this past year on 1 year deals with club options. I think our pitching situation looks better than it has in....honestly I can't think of a time outside of when we THOUGHT we'd have Yo, Sheets and Greinke for a full year. Anyway, I just don't think it's hard to imagine Braun being willing to play for a contender outside of LA or Milwaukee. It was different when he was closer to his MVP year and had the ability to refuse trades and could help any team, but I see a lot of potential options if he wants to spend one more year trying to get a ring. -
Lorenzo Cain opts out for remainder of 2020 season
HiAndTight replied to Eye Black's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
no. any player who wanted to opt back in to his team's club player pool had to do so by 1 august. i believe that it's possible, however, if that player were released from his contract and became a free agent, that he would be eligible to sign with any other team and be added to their cpp. and from what i've gathered, i'm pretty sure that if the brewers traded cain (players on the restricted list can be assigned to another club via an approved transaction), he could join that new team's cpp. we know that clubs may only trade players in their cpp, but we also know that a player who spent time in his team's cpp but was later removed was allowed to be traded and assigned to his new team's cpp. but, i'm not certain on this possibility. but, i say with certainty that cain cannot return to playing for the brewers in 2020. he is done. he is forfeiting salary and service time with his decision. Ok, appreciate you letting me know. I just saw that Markakis had opted back in(I believe that was on the 29th) so I wasn't certain how this worked. That sucks, but I'm sure he spent a lot of time thinking about it, so I'm sure he was pretty resolute in his decision. He could have been placed on the 15 day or taken a leave if he wasn't sure, so it was unlikely he would have come back in any event. I really liked the Trent Grisham trade, but damn...it'd be nice to have him back at the moment. I'm still glad they made the deal on balance, but I don't think Urias is going to make the big impact this year, it'll most likely be next year(and he COULD be a big time stud). -

HiAndTight replied to Eye Black's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Agreed. 6 months from now we might have herd immunity...we might have a vaccine as mentioned. There should be far fewer variables. I understand him opting out...but I'd be really surprised if he opted out again next year(he was willing to play this year until ~20 Marlins came down with Covid and the series was cancelled vs the Cards). I wonder if there is any chance he opts back in if by some miracle MLB looks like they have this somewhat under control and don't experience any more significant hiccup's? That seems to be incredibly unlikely and I don't know if there is some "opt in" deadline or if there is if that passed as I only know of one case of someone opting back in. But if the Brewers are battling for a playoff spot and really struggling in CF and Cain wants to re-join the team, can he come back? -

I love Braun...but I'm not sure he's in that class. Cruz .311/.392/.639 1.031 41 HR's in 120 games(his average for the past 5 seasons) Davis signed coming off a 48 HR season and 4 straight 40+HR seasons. Encarnacion is a bit closer, but still has been quite a bit more productive in recent seasons. And then there's the financial impact Covid is having on all sports and is inevitably going to have on the Brewers. I would love to see Braun back next year, but I would guess if the number is the 11 million, it'll be Mark A who makes that call. I just can't see Stearns devoting that much to a declining hitter for what would be at least in part sentimental reasons. But I hope it happens. -
I don't follow recruiting like I once did, but looking at Penn State's signings plus the guys they are still after in 2021, it appears like there is a good chance that they won't be signing a TE in 2021. So if they told Cross that he would be the only TE they would recruit in 2022, then he goes in as the only tight end in 2022, with no 2021 tight end ahead of him. Wisconsin tight end numbers, 2019 = 2, 2020 = 2, 2021 = 1. Penn State, 2019 = 1, 2020 = 2, 2021 = 0 (not finalized). Playing time could have been a pretty significant factor in this. Sucks as a Badger fan. Bucky may have legitimate numbers at the position now (they sure didn't last year), but the fact remains that there isn't one pass-catching tight end on the roster that has done anything of note in a Big 10 game once you get past Jake Ferguson. Is it a given this guy is going to be a TE? I seem him listed at WR'er on ESPN recruiting rankings.

Centerfield Trade Options (Red Sox - JBJ, Pillar)

Not special, but a nice LH'ed option in CF. I guess it'd depend on what you'd have to give up, but I'd gladly take him for cheap. -
Is it time to restructure the scouting department
HiAndTight replied to brewers888's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Turang's first season as a 19 year old he reached HiA and was around .300/.400 most of the year in Appleton. It's just an incredibly flawed way to look at a prospect. Look at the number next to his hit tool and then go back and compare that to a former top 10 prospect who hasn't developed like most hoped and say, "see, that's proof that our system is terrible." They're VERY different players. Turang is a far more patient hitter, takes a lot more walks, has elite speed. And I'm not even sure he's our #1 prospect at this point. 2nd-You've got THREE YEARS worth of results. That might be more telling if this was the NFL, but it's not, it's baseball. You need a helluva lot more time than that to expect to draft and develop players. Also, pretty much every team has to sign guys like Smoak and Sogard to fill out their rosters. -
Glorified preseason game. Who cares? Right, these regular season games don't matter for the Bucks. What is predictable is they will be the #1 seed no matter what happens in these games. Giannis plays 16 minutes and we lose by 3 to a team we could face in the first round. I don't find that game the least big embarrassing...or predictable. We SHOULD have been able to win but it's more about getting guys legs back under them. The ONLY thing we're playing for right now is to get guys in shape and hitting their stride. And we'll still have a easy 1st round series to help with that.
-
I bet if universities threaten to pull the scholarships of those that don't want to play they will change their stance. I'm sure college athletics would love to trim the fat right now. Yeah...a school could do that. And that school would look absolutely terrible in every imaginable way.
-
I think there are a lot of people who get easily distracted and will have other tabs open during class. Plus, the class discussion and the lectures just aren't the same when you're not there in person....in my opinion. I suppose the point about the test grades improving due to them being online is probably true.
-
Remember this name: Reggie Begelton I was more excited about him before the pre-season was nixed...but everything I saw from when we signed him looked promising enough...looks like a tough, physical WR'er who can get some YAC yards. This group is easily talented enough...but MVS needs to be tougher mentally and ESQ has to improve the work ethic that dogged him coming out of ND. Two guys who are 6'4, 6'5 and run sub 4.4 40's with good hands and ability after the catch?
-
I'm sure most college football players would opt for an online experience with their tutors and not attend classes in person. I hope this doesn't become a trend post-covid. I just can't imagine taking classes online you get nearly as much out of class. I bet you'd see a pretty drastic decline in test results.
-
I'd say when you start saying things like that...you realize the biggest difference between the crowds in Seattle and Green Bay is in the ages! What type of 3rd down? You're AT the game! If it's 3rd down on the 3rd series of the game, does it matter? That's pretty much the whole point of HFA! Anyway...most people I know think it's better to watch the games at home. I went to games all the time growing up, in my 20's. Now...just doesn't seem nearly as fun and like you both said, just a pain.
-
I love going to Lambeau...but I hate the drive up, the traffic and all the rest, so in that sense, I usually sell most of my tickets and only go to one game a year. I don't really find the Timeouts and all that to be the problem...it's the fans at Lambeau. You get up and stand during a 3rd down on D and you have people tapping you on the shoulder. It gets so annoying. It's an older fan base, so...I get it and maybe it's just the section I have, but it feels like you're supposed to act like you're at the Master, not an NFL game. Baseball games I love going to on like Wednesday afternoons when you had 18K people there and I can kick back. I would say it depends on the magnitude of the 3rd down. No one wants to stand for every play, people are eating/drinking and in the bleachers things are pretty tight. I do get annoyed when someone stands up in front of me every other play, must be getting old. But I am with OldSchoolSnapper on the experience at an NFL game, it's just a pain in the ass these days to go and the games are so much better on TV now than 30-40 years ago. I think the long security lines sort of were the last straw for me but I did make 2 of my games last year(gold) and had a good time, once you get to your seat it's great. What does everyone think about maybe getting Everson Griffen? Seems like a mistfit for our D but I am always hoping we move away from the 3-4 anyway. I like the 3-4, but if you're signing Griffen it's for pass rush situations anyway and then you're out of your base D. I don't think they'd be signing him to have him start(though Pettine has kinda used a hybrid system). It's a nice signing...for maybe 5 million. With the Cap questions next year, not sure he's going to help this team where they really need the help(run defense) anyway.
-
Surprise, surprise. He's still a guy that can't go deep into games and doesn't know where the ball is going half the time. Hard, hard pass. Which is probably a good sign that he'd thrive on the Brewers. We had starters go through an order 3 times fewer than any team in history last year. Counsell doesn't like pitchers to pitch 3 times through...so if he can dominate the first 2 times and hand it to the pen...don't see much of a problem.
-
Well that's good to know. My billing cycle starts on I think the 18th of every month, so I just keep putting it off. ALSO...did NOT know that I should be getting Hulu for free. Now help me out. My sister got a phone on my plan...she gave me the cash for the phone, they told me I couldn't pay it off right now, that I'd get charged 40 bucks a month for it but I could pay it off after a month. That was a couple years ago. Now they're saying it's a "leased" phone and not one that I bought and that she has to return the phone...which she's just a nightmare, so I'd rather pay a 40 dollar a month penalty than have to ask her to go out of her way at all, but seriously, I was there when they said they'd charge me for 2 years or until I paid it off. You look like you're already saving me 30 bucks a month...any advice you can give me on this one!
-
Probably. I have no idea why I thought they had another scandal recently, but I just googled it and couldnt come up with anything. They've been investigated for a couple things since Sandusky. One had to do with Hazing IIRC. All relatively small things.
-
Meh...he's an animal, but you add Adams and you lose Clowney. Not seeing a big difference. Clowney was ruining game plays last year when healthy even though he did put up big sack numbers. Now if they bring him back and add Adams...that's starting to get back to being a dominant defense.
