  1. teams don't have very good rates of keeping pitchers stashed away in pens, even though theoretically it should make sense. He could get taken, but I don't really foresee it. I think teams would rather take a likely reliable reliever than a prospect that may leave the bullpen short-handed all year long.

  3. say what you want about giving away free outs, but the safety/suicide squeezes have worked at a fairly high rate. Trading an out for a run isn't always a good thing, but in many cases it can be a valuable strategy. Plus, we also seemed to have terrible success with the contact play resulting in runners being thrown out at home. I don't like all bunts, but I also don't criticize them. Many resulted in productive outs, and if they had been run-scoring groundouts to 2nd people would be praising the effective situational hitting. Sometimes with 2 men out they not only scored runs, but also avoided double plays thanks to the bunts. It's a tool to have. You can't over-rely on them, but the Rays have sure been very productive over the years and they were the first team I ever heard talking about safety squeezes
  4. I wouldn't mind us considering Bedard, Liriano, or Edwin Jackson on the right contract. I have a feeling Jackson will be more expensive than we'd like, but the other two could possibly be had
  5. Brewers are 75-72 (15 to go) and Cards are 78-70 (14 to go). What will it take for the Brewers to win the wild card? Does going 9-6 do it? 10-5? My thinking is that 10-5 could put us in position for a playoff game to be the 2nd wild card, although I think we really need to probably go 12-3. The Cards have 3 games each vs the Reds and Nationals, with 5 more against the Astros and 3 against the Cubs. We really need the Nationals and Reds to take 4 of 6 from the Cards. If the Cubs and Astros can take 4 of 8 against the Cards, that would put them at 84 wins and give us a great shot given how we are playing. Unfortunately our rotation currently lines up with 3 starts each for the starters with no off-days, so we can't skip a guy to get Yo an extra start.
  6. I could see Bucci with a strong AFL, but I could also see teams failing to take him. I definitely see Wooten getting taken in the Rule V

  8. heck yeah!!! 1-0 on 10 game trip. Good start to it. And with Philly and Los Angeles now likely adding doubleheaders, that could be positive as well. Let's beat the Pirates while they're down. I feel bad for them for the 20 years of futility, but I'm greedy for wins!
  9. Interesting the notes on changeups. I thought 2-3 years ago people were saying his success was because of his advanced changeup, not his 90 mph heater (before velocity spike). Frankly if I had a 96 mph sinker that got beaten into the ground, I'd throw it at least 70% of the time.
  10. Mass, I'm not sure all the Latin players are eligible. I thought there was a rule that if a player is in a summer league in a foreign nation (eg, DSL), that does not count towards their clocks for rule 5 eligibility.

  12. Yes, they get rings for every championship in baseball. Even fall league champs get rings (I worked for three Phx Desert Dogs teams that got rings...3 for 3 baby!). I assume all players that contributed get them, but that could be a lot in the minors...great question TheCrew07
  13. pogo, we had a stretch in May, June, and July where it seemed like a 3 run lead wasn't enough. That's something that would be interesting to look at when trying to blame the bullpen
  14. logan, I wasn't trying to make it sound like I was in the minority. To me 20-40 could be "a lot of people" because they were a vocal group. I most definitely didn't mean to claim that I was one of only a few. It's just that for me, I'm 31 now. I've followed the prospects since the late 90's when we got one minor league breakdown per week in the Journal-Sentinel (or it might have been Sentinel or Journal before the merger). I remember staying up late for boxscores on usatoday.com. I really enjoy following prospects. But it's been a 10-15 year transition from a team with no budget in perpetual rebuilding mode to a team that can selectively keep star players with a decent budget. It's been a joy for most of these last 5 years, except for the Macha years.
  15. congrats boys, can't wait to see the pics of the MWL Championship rings.
  16. I wouldn't mind having him back this year. If he can help out, I wouldn't mind him on a 1 year deal with Bianchi at Utility and Segura in AAA
  17. It makes me wonder if we have any possibility of adding a position player, given that the rotation looks worth taking a gamble with Yo Estrada Fiers Peralta Rogers The position player would have to be SS, CF, or RF. Would be interesting. I can't say it's disappointing anymore. We legitimately should have 8 more wins. It makes me feel better coming to Brewerfan because I'm not reading lots of comments about trading our star players anymore. Those really were bumming me out and frustrating me, because I was seeing a team dramatically underachieving while others were seeing a team that they felt needed a massive overhaul and couldn't contend despite arguably 9 potential all-stars in any given year. Glad to see us over .500, and hoping for my bet to payoff (along with pitchleague)
  18. I'd take Meek. He always is throwing 95+ gas against the Brewers. I like power arms
  19. i looked it up. He's already signed. So gaining (or not gaining) an extra year of arbitration is meaningless
  20. for some reason I thought we already locked him up for 4-5 years. Why would Super 2 matter? I guess I'm wrong
  21. After rotator cuff surgery, I'm not holding out hope for Chris. I would rather a guy coming off TJ surgery anytime. I really liked Narveson before, but I'm not sure if we'll even tender him a contract now
  22. pogo, I could never wish for Dempster. His stupid glove maneuver would drive me insane every 5th day.
  23. pitchleague, I'm with you. I put $5 on the Brewers to win it all back in late August in Vegas. payout would be $2505. I thought it was optimistic but fun. Surprisingly the fiance asked "wait, if you think they can do it, why not put $20 or $100 on them?" I had no answer, since I was up $2k and can find lots of other stupid things to wager it on.
  24. LouisEly, you could be onto something. Remember the Cardinals won the Series last year primarily because their awful regular season pen became unhittable in the playoffs.
