  1. We need to be keeping Hart. He'll accept a below-market avg contract extension, is a good ambassador for the town, and is a darn good 1b. I'd extend him at 3 years $30 million, give or take a few million. He'd do a lot more good for us than Dempster at 3 years $40 million.
  2. Grilli hasn't been very good in his career. I guess he's like Affeldt...awful for many years so I stopped looking, and he became good
  3. SRB, given what Upton got in free agency, I'd try shopping Carlos to see what he can bring back in a trade. It could be worth it since there's a high probability of him having an awful year and we have adequate replacements for CF.
  4. Melvin has had glowing comments in the past about Dickey and other knuckleballers. But that doesn't mean he'll give up Peralta for him
  5. With Weeks and Hart having contracts that are up in the next year or two, I'm not sure why there isn't money for Hamilton. Just cause our payroll is $80 million next year doesn't mean it can't be $90+ million in 2014.
  6. just curious, but has anyone heard if Brandon Katin was attempting to comeback from his knee surgery? He was a good organizational soldier, and has has as much power in the system as anyone since Nelson Cruz.
  7. He demanded his way out of San Diego. He whined when he was with Detroit. Wasn't he shot when he was in Miami (while not his fault, I generally believe good people rarely wind up in these predicaments)? He generally complained about MLB clubs having conspiracies against him
  8. What seemed to stink these past years for Parra was that he focused on the splitter as his 2nd pitch, and it was just never very good. Hitters took it when it was low, and wailed on it when it hung.
  9. Carlos Perez seems intriguing. Why not bring him to camp
  10. I believe Jose Mercedes was a rule V pick as well. I remember Matt Williams, but don't think he appeared for us
  11. he's better than what we've let go...Parra, Loe, and Veras.
  12. I'm not sure why Heckathorn is a concern. It concerns me that he's lost 7 mph off his fastball since college, can't strike guys out, and continually gets shelled. If another organization can turn him into a big leaguer--or even AAA/AA fodder--then he's better off in the other organization. He's behind so many other pitchers here that his chances of seeing the big leagues are probably less than 5%, and his chances of being effective are less than that. Manny Parra has a much better track record, much better stuff, and throws lefty, and he's being phased out. Heckathorn likely will never be as effective as Parra, Loe, or Veras, seeing as he has had little minor league success to speak of. I'm more concerned about Wooten being taken, as I think he has a legitimate shot to be an effective big league reliever.
  13. Brewcrewdue80, I think you need to learn about stats. Edwin Jackson's numbers indicate he was a solid #2 since 2008.
  14. I'd have Gamel as the RF option. He's a heck of a lot faster than Hart. Hart looked so good at 1b that I'd keep him there
  15. Selig may have to look at this rash of deals....BoSox to LAD, now Miami to Tor. Just not really good for the game. And I agree Loria needs to be eliminated. I still blame him for Montreal!
  16. Prince has had two good years in the minors for a middle infielder or utility guy. His numbers are driven by his OBP
  17. Peterson wasn't liked around here? I thought he was loved. I guess I'm wrong.
  18. wasn't Mac Suzuki a free agent that signed out of HS with a US team?
  19. Episode 1 was awful. Episode 2 and 3 helped redeem the trilogy. I know Lucas originally planned 7-8-9...wonder if they'll use his original plans
  20. I would prefer a bat to a pitcher. Wolf and Ben McDonald have been our best successes with free agent pitchers. If we sign no pitchers, or if they are guys that fall to us in late January, then I think we could fit Hamilton in our budget. I'd definitely stick him in RF. 130 games of him in RF opens up 32 games for Gamel. That's likely better than Aoki/Gamel in RF over the season.
  21. I'd take Hamilton, trade Gomez for a reliever, give our young pitching a chance, perhaps sign a starter in Feb for under-value, and be happy with or 6 runs a game.
  22. bobbledude25...don't get me wrong. I've gone to plenty of games besides the 3 seasons I worked in the league. My unfortunate moment was when I broke the news that JJ Hardy hurt his shoulder in a game. Of course, I also thought Weeks played pretty well at SS. The crazy vibe is because for most games (except Surprise and Scottsdale) there are 20 fans there, everyone can hear eachother, etc. It's really like being at a high quality HS game, only without the mom's cheering and the dad's screaming at the ump. Most of the games tend to be offensive, as teams send top-flight hitters and B/C-type pitchers. And the reporting out of the AFL can be amusing (I remember asking Ryan Howard if he owned an OF glove. He said he didn't have one with him in AZ. I pointed out that one of the websites was claiming he was working out in the OF during drills so that the Phillies could keep him and Thome. He laughed and asked if I'd seen him in the OF, because that was the truth). In the AFL one year we had a slight boost in attendance cause we had the Dbacks on the team, but I think most were there to get Jenny Finch's autographs at each game. The Dbacks were some good guys that year....I really hoped we could trade for an A-ball kid named Miguel Montero. He mostly rode the bench, but he was such a great rah-rah team player that you instantly knew Miggy had a chance. Anyways, enjoy the games. I was just shocked because I've never heard of anyone coming to town to watch the AFL.
  23. Brett Dolan (now of the Astros) broadcast games in--I think--2004, 2005, and 2006 when I worked in the league.
  24. bobbledude...seriously? the only people at the games normally are some scouts (not many) and baseball personnel, ASU girls wanting to be trophy wives, a few retirees, and the autograph hounds that hang outside the locker rooms. The night games in Scottsdale can be fun, but you're in for a very crazy vibe if you go to AFL games. The reported attendance usually includes players, managers/coaches, concession workers, clubbies, grounds crew, etc. Have fun. Weather has been nice lately.
  25. I absolutely loved Ben Sheets and miss those great outings he threw up there. However, comparing him to King Felix is tricky since King Felix's prime has been much younger than Ben's. Still, two great pitchers--why argue?
