  1. what if we win out? it could be like the Rockies several years ago
  2. I don't know why it's unpopular. I think the majority of posters on this board expected the offense to be around the same--or ever better. There was simply no justifying the Brewers giving a first baseman that much money when we expected we could adequately fill 1b for about 1/50th the price.
  3. Forgetting platoon ideas and I'll actually acknowledge for the first time that Gomez may return and start....what about Gomez in CF most of the time, Gamel in RF most of the time, and Aoki spelling both of them to the tune of 100 starts (Gamel playing some DH, too)? Aoki makes for a very good option for 4th OF. We could carry Schafer, Gindl, or Morgan as the 5th OF. Aoki could log 2 starts a week in RF and 1 per week in CF.
  4. I'd definitely move Mat to RF for next year. OF should be low stress on the knee. Aoki can play CF for a season or two
  5. I used to work at Phoenix Muni in the AFL. It's a nice place for a game during the day. Night games are rough. I'll try to get to a game for old times sake since the Brewers aren't in Peoria or Surprise for once
  6. Villanueva was always pretty good. The problem was that when he had bad games, they generally were very bad. Still, wasn't he more a victim of his salary and our already full rotation than anything? He was a great long man in the pen and a pretty good starter. Where he got miscast was as an 8th inning guy.
  7. Rogers would have great potential as a 5th man in the rotation. He'd be a 5-6 inning guy with great stuff. If he figures out some efficiency, he could quickly become our #2.
  8. Sure it does...it's a chance for him to audition as a 1b/dh/lf/rf for Milwaukee and other clubs. It makes about as much sense as when we sent minor league free agents like Bausher, Narron, and Wolf to the AFL. It's a chance for him to make up at bats before the deadline to be added to the 40-man roster
  9. I assumed he was in the rotation plans. He's been outstanding this year. Perhaps the success has been quiet because the wins aren't there, but he hasn't been a concern
  10. He's in great position to hold down the 4th/5th spot while continuing to improve. Really happy for Mark.
  11. Dang iPad lost my post. Yes, I do need to apologize. You never really gave up on the year (that I'm aware of), but you did advocate a rather large rebuilding effort from day 1. I'm sorry I have mixed those two up. And yes I advocated trading those 5 guys. But I felt a) they weren't contributing to success and b) they wouldn't be with us next year. Two are gone, and I can't really justify keeping the other three next year (although I can see scenarios where things could change). I never advocated dealing the all-star core of our team-- Weeks, Hart (at 1b), Braun, Yo, Axford, Ramirez, Lucroy, or Greinke. I never felt the benefits of the deals would outweigh the costs (I'm an Econ guy). I was pleasantly surprised with the Greinke deal, though. I felt we'd seen too any great stretches catapault teams into he playoffs to give up in July. The famed Moneyball streak, the Rockies streak, the '11 Brewers, and the '11 Cards come to mind, along with the '10-11 Packers and '11-12 Giants. Do I think we'll win it this year? No. But I've long argued our team should be fine. With an adequate bullpen, we probably should be leading the division....but unfortunately it didn't play out as we expected. Others indicated they wouldn't mind us losing for draft position. Draft picks are nice, but they don't mean you'll have success. Drafting wisely/successfully does. Therefore I always advocate trying hard to win games. I just wish we had recent draft success, whether picking top 10 or bottom 10.
  12. Adam, just cause you gave up on this season in April (or was it March?), doesn't mean we all did. In late July I was advocating keeping Greinke, trying to play to our potential, and hoping for a hot streak in August like last year when we only made the playoffs because we won something like 27 of 32. We're now at 11 of 13 and hoping to keep it going. Is 21-8 possible? It is the way we are playing and would give us 86 wins. Having said that, I fully understand (and appreciate) the Greinke trade. But if we went back to Weeks' injury last year, how many expected us to leapfrog several teams, practically go undefeated in August, and run away with the division? I'm holding out hope for the season. Two weeks ago I put $5 on the Brewers to win the World Series, and I'm holding out hope that I can cash that in for $2505.
  13. Josh Prince at 3b. They continue to let him dabble at other positions, so that's interesting
  14. TheCrew, does Farris have the armstrength to play SS in a pinch? I think of a utility guy as someone that might play roles like pinch running, but also playing some 2b, 3b, ss, lf, cf. To me he wouldn't kill us for a day or two (or 5).
  15. I'd like to see us finish at 84-78. That would be 22-11, and would make us feel better into the offseason
  16. If we timed it right, we could outright him to the minors. As someone who hasn't been outrighted before, he couldn't refuse an assignment. Of course, he could be claimed
  17. As a free agent with some health, he's a 4 year $60 million type pitcher. As a pitcher looking for a bounceback, someone would happily give him 1 year at $6-10 million. If he's strong the next month, he's a definite guy you make the required offer to.
  18. K-Rod's stuff is better this year than last. But his command has been awful. Like many relievers, he'll likely be very successful for years to come. How many lives did closers like Todd Jones, Troy Percival, Jose Valverde, and Brad Lidge, etc have? K-Rod is basically having his first bad year. He'll bounce back next year and begin his second life as a strong reliever.
  19. from comments it sounds like the Brewers may use 6-7 starters and piggyback a few to limit innings.
  20. This after they released Jack Cust a few weeks ago, and he's also having a great year
  21. I remember his two hit game at Coors, he joked that the wind held his ball up and proclaimed that it's a difficult place to bat
  22. Bunting should have a 75% chance of working, unless you're from the Carlos Gomez school of popping up bunts. Getting a hit--even with a Hall of Famer--only has a 30% chance of working
  23. bump...I wish I had the red-phone connection in Doug Melvin's office...for once my GM-cap made me look smart. Of course, my success rate as a GM-wanna be is somewhere around Ben Sheet's batting avg.
  24. LouisEly, I'm glad to see it's up to two A ball guys. It used to only be one. I included a few of them because I could see the Brewers going several directions. I could also see Farris going as a utility guy to see how he does. Halton perhaps, but I have listed lots of others ahead of him
  25. I'd commit to Gomez if at around $4 million a year. But I would probably choose to play a combination of Aoki, Schafer, and Gamel in RF and CF next year (Gamel in RF, DH, some 1b). I'd love for Gindl to be the 5th OF (although I think better offense than Schafer), except that'd be 4 lefties. Morgan and Gomez are okay players, but we have cheaper alternatives that can produce as well
