  1. What has been odd with Prince is how he went from such great plate discipline in '09 to rather awful discipline in '10-11. I don't know yet if he's in the same category as Richardson, Festa, and the other college guys that crushed R+ only to struggle in A ball, but he's getting there.
  2. I am disappointed this merger happened. Southwest is clearly not a low fare airline anymore, and reducing one of the few airlines with a business model that could compete with them will only let their prices rise. What amazes me is how loyal some people are about Southwest. They all adamantly claim that Southwest is a discount airline, yet every time I've looked their price is equaled or bettered by USAirways or others. I think Southwest is living on its reputation from about a decade ago.
  3. Two ways I look at it...1) do you have more winning streaks of value than key losing streaks? 2) Did you win more that you should have lost, that lose that you should have won?
  4. sbrylski, I think that the problems are with poverty in Pakistan. The average poor muslim there is not likely to be educated enough to understand that imams and clerics are telling them lies. It's easy to believe what others tell them, and they have no ability to fact check their teachings. The government officials realize that they need to cooperate with the US for protection both from the US and extremists. The gov't also likely wants to bring lawless tribal regions under its control. A common fear has to be that they will be assassinated, just as Bhutto was assassinated by extremists. Throw in that within the military and the gov't their are bound to be sympathizers with the Taliban/Al Qaeda causes, and it's cause for all the confusion.
  5. dathoser, where did you find the compound details? I can't find that on yahoo, cnn, foxnews, and usatoday
  6. sbrylski06, I've read that Al Qaeda currently has less than 100 members. Most of the people we consider part of the organization are merely other groups affiliated with the super-secretive organization. Yes, lots of militants are out there. But without Bin Ladin's leadership, we'll see how things progress. I'm still worried, but I'm very grateful that most of the top leadership has been killed over the years. I'm actually most concerned about how Pakistanis will view our operation.
  7. Wow, this is just awesome. I remember 9/11 very vividly. I don't think this has fully hit me yet!
  8. If Hart gets going and playing even mediocre, that's a huge boost. With Morgan back soon and splitting time in CF, That would give us a pretty good 7 hitters (Lucroy as 7th),
  9. Logan, I can't fault Fielder for missing the Mitre throw since it was into the runner...but any avg defender at least gets a glove on the the McGehee throw. Casey did as he was supposed to...got to a touch ball, planted his feet, made a strong throw, and kept it low (since the tendency is to backfoot the throw and airmail it). In-between hop or not, Fielder should have at least touched it, and any professional 1st baseman should have completed the play.
  10. Interesting to notice Burgos and Caufield jumping onto my radar for the first time in years. Looking at Caufield's minor league stats, he actually has only had one bad year, and it was in Brevard. I'm starting to get intrigued.
  11. Warning Track Power, that is correct sometimes, but not today. I don't think Yo had a single 0-2 pitch today. He was behind of his first 12, and the streak only continued after that. Point is, he's not throwing strikes, not getting ahead of hitters, and not throwing quality strikes when he does find the zone.
  12. Yo can't throw his breaking pitches, especially his curve, for strikes. Throw in that he's nibbling with his heater, and other teams are just sitting back waiting for him to throw a belt-high heater
  13. velocity is down to 91-93...not like we're talking 88
  14. I'm still waiting for the inevitable to happen... A routine throw from accross the diamond will miss Prince's glove and hit him in the face...and the error will go to the other infielder
  15. I really think Lucroy should hit 2nd. That would put us (soon) at: Weeks Lucroy Braun Fielder McGehee Hart Betancourt pitcher Morgan/Gomez
  16. The article is pretty poorly written. For instance, I had no clue that Salome was signed while Jack Z was scouting the DR. I was under some odd impression that he was a high draft pick out of a HS in New York. It also claims he didn't catch in 2010.
  17. Betancourt is tagging the ball, just right at guys. his avg on balls in play has to be awful considering how hard he hits it. At the same time, I'd rather give Brandon Wood 500 at bats at SS the rest of the way to see if he can develop
  18. exactly fellas. It seems like he pops up lots of bunts as well. He reminds me of a much more toolsy version of Alex Sanchez when at the plate. Sanchez really did nothing for us...he couldn't bunt and refused to. But then a few years later with Detroit he led the league in infield hits, with many of them being bunts. Gomez really needs AAA...I wonder if we DFA'd him to get him to AAA, if anyone would actually claim him. In AAA I'd almost be tempted to let him try being a power hitter....bat him 4th. Either he adapts and thrives, or fails miserably. But expecting he can be a legit 1 or 2 hitter is foolish. Best case scenario would be that he learns to draw a few walks and becomes a Cameron-like 20-homer defensive whiz. Worst case is that we're at least grateful he's not wasting a roster spot
  19. following up my previous post and my edit, I remember hearing that the major difference between being a good AAA player and being a good big leaguer is ample opportunities. For instance, Kieschnick used to mash AAA, but was sent down after a hot start one year and was never the same as a hitter. Kevin Barker and Mat Gamel have been stud Brewers minor leaguers that struggle in the majors in part because of a lack of playing time. Keeping that in mind, his career AAA stats: 330 games (1288 PA) 78 2b 8 3b 77 hr 236 rbi 225 runs 129 bb 327 k .283/.350/.536/.886 by looking at those rates, if he were to play a full season in AAA it's reasonable to expect numbers around: 30-25 2b 30-35 hr 100 rbi 90 runs 55 walks 170 ks knock those down a bit, and it's possible he could be a shortstop capable of hitting around .240 with a .300 obp, good defense (at least early in his career), and 20-25 hr power. So really that's sort of like a Jose Hernandez-type, which isn't terrible
  20. I'd take Wood for AAA/IF depth. The hope would be we find a miracle with a Jose Guillen, Jose Bautista, or Nelson Cruz-like transformation from AAAA player to big league impact player. I'd happily get rid of Almonte, Kotsay, or Nieves to find a roster spot for him. OF course, the best spot is AAA depth. Oh yeah, and he went to the school I teach at!
  21. off topic, but also of note. One year I coached JV softball, and we had a great leadoff hitter (lefty who could bunt very well), so she had an OBP of like .650. I usually had her steal 2nd. But we couldn't always get her in. I also hated having her steal with good hitters at the plate. So I devised a strategy to put a hitter in the 2-hole that was batting under .200. The key is that it seemed that the other 80% of the time she would ground out the other way (to the right side). So most games we had a speedy runner on 3rd with only 1 out, and it led to us increasing our efficiency. Not sure how that relates to Gomez since he's an awful bunter and never goes the other way. But if his outs were productive and got Weeks to scoring position, I wouldn't have as much of a problem as I do now.
  22. It could also be that Braun is finally adapting to pitching styles. His first year he wowed the league. Pitchers kept challenging him. He may never repeat that rookie year, but he may be evolving as a hitter
  23. If he can throw 60-70 pitches, I'd consider him ready. Shoot for 4-6 innings the first 2-3 times out before getting him to around 100 pitches.
  24. PrinceEatMeat...I hate it when the milb.com boxscores do that! It showed Greinke, then they revised it and added the other relievers for the 4th and beyond.
  25. Greinke went 4 innings! 2 hits, 2 walks, 0 runs, 4 K's
