I just don't understand how acquiring Beltran helps us given that he isn't a CF anymore, the Mets won't want to take on salary ala Corey Hart and it will likely cost a lot to acquire him. The rumor yesterday from Heyman was that the Mets were asking the Phillies for Domonic Brown! I just don't see how this trade happens barring it being a 3 way deal with a Corey Hart involved. Even then I don't think replacing Hart with Beltran is such a significant upgrade that it truly makes that great of a difference. On a related note to acquiring an additional OF, I would love to see is us acquire Kosuke Fukudome, essentially taking Mark Kotsay's role. Fukudome as the 4th OF in Milwaukee for the stretch run would be very nice. Throw in him LF to give Braun's leg a rest. I'm sure the Cubs would listen given his $13.5MM salary. All of a sudden that bench looks a little stronger with backup OF of Fukudome and Gomez.

Exactly. Desmond is a very intriguing buy low candidate. At worst IMO, Desmond pushes with YuBet in terms of offensive production (AVG, OBP, OPS) the rest of the season. Desmond adds a dimesion of speed on the bases that YuBet doesn't (20 SB, only 4 CS). The upgrade in D alone would be worth the trade but Desmond also brings the secondary speed element. I'm not saying he is going to be Reyes or Ramirez at SS, but he doesn't have to be. We don't need a leadoff hitter or a cleanup hitter at SS. Whoever we acquire needs to be sure handed with the glove and able to be counted on to get on base and swipe a bag out of the 7th or 8th spot in the lineup. Desmond is only 25 and is improving on D. I say it's worth it for 2011 and he COULD be the answer at SS long term as well.

Aramis Ramirez

As much as I "hate" Ramirez, he'd be a very welcome addition to fill our 3B hole. The problem is that the Cubs are our most hated rival. I seriously doubt they trade him in the division, let alone to us, for anything short of a Gamel/Thornburg/Peralta type prospect, which just puts him out of our price range. If that's the cost, I'd rather take my chances on: 1. A Casey McGehee turanround 2. A Taylor Green callup 3. A Chase Headley 4. A Ian Stewart or Wilson Betemit type deal FWIW, Ian Stewart is a really underrated possible target for me. I would acquire him in a heartbeat to platoon with McGehee the rest of the season. I don't know what the cost would be but I doubt it would be too high given his slump this season. -

Honestly though, I'm beginning to expect something big in the next week or so. I think you're going to see something unexpectedly big to upgrade 3B. Judging by DM's past I wouldn't be surprised in the elast if he somehow figures a way to acquire a Aramis Ramirez, David Wright or Mark Reynolds type 3B. How that happens is anyones guess because I have no clue, just like I had no clue about us acquiring Greinke. You may well be right on this part. I hope you are right. I understand the market for acquiring a shortstop via trade is tough right now. That still didn't preclude Melvin from DFAing Betancourt a month ago, or at least making sure Roenicke used Wilson and Counsell earlier in the season. There was a stretch where those two were rotting on the bench and Betancourt was allowed free reign to suck every day at shortstop. I realize the internal options aren't great hitters, but at least their defense would have been better and they would have exhibited something resembling plate discipline. I'm with you on DFA'ing YuBet, however our other options are equally poor in my opinion. Counsell looks done. Nothing he has shown me in 2011 gives me any confidence he could hit over .200 and no matter how good he could he be on D, we can't start a sub .200 singles hitter. I'm definitely not comfortable with Wilson in anything other than a platoon. I don't mind him in the backup role he has now (6th IF/emergency OF) but I wouldn't even trust him in the Counsell role for 2012.
