  1. Rosenthal tweeted earlier today that the Dodgers would only trade one of Carroll and Furcal.
  2. This is where I am coming from on Furcal... He's the best option in terms of providing offense and defense. Barmes and Ryan provide awesome D but average O. Carroll is a utility IF to me. Furcal is average on both O and D so he wouldn't be a liability on either. His liability is injury. I am an advocate still for Brendan Ryan because of his D, but with Rickie hurt I am nervous about throwing an all D, little stick into the lineup. I wouldn't be unhappy if we somehow traded for Ryan, but I think we need the potential offense that Furcal would bring.
  3. Same for Axford. Wolf is going to have to go long tomorrow. Saito closing or Loe?
  4. I think the real question is if healthy, are we better with Lopez/Carroll or Lopez/Furcal? I know Furcal is an injury risk BUT what makes the team better? Even if Furcal were to get hurt again, are we really significantly better (meaning worth trading a prospect) with Carroll/Lopez than Betancourt/Lopez? I don't think we are. Now if Furcal were to get hurt, when Rickie comes back, can't we stick Lopez at SS? I think Lopez at SS would be better than Carroll but I don't have Lopez's dWAR to back that up. Furcal should be the main focus for DM now.
  5. Fully expecting a 6-4-3 double play to sound like Furcal-Lopez-Fielder around August 5th. Who would've thought that in March?
  6. This is an outside the box idea that actually makes some sense to me. If the Mariners would include Brendan Ryan + $$, I would take on Figgins. So would RR I'd imagine. Figgins is owed $17MM over the next two years. I would take him if the M's paid say $10MM, gave us Ryan and we didn't have to include top flight prospects. His 2011 has been bad but he's only a season removed from a .259/.340 AVG/OBP slash. That would play for us this season at 2B until Rickie returns and he could fill the utility role for the next two seasons. I am definitely intrigued. Figgins + $10MM + Ryan for ....? What's fair?
  7. I would imagine that if Melvin trades for Carroll he'd start at 2B for 3-6 weeks and then move over to SS. At this point, I'd be thrilled if the club is able to acquire Carroll without having to overpay. The deadline is only ~72 hours away, and unless Melvin already has something in the works, that's not a ton of time to get deals done. Carroll is a mediocre player, but mediocre is a whole lot better than terrible.I just can't get behind Jamey Carroll unless someone else is acquired to play SS. If Carroll plays 2B until Weeks gets back, ok; I can handle that. Furcal/Barmes at SS and Carroll at 2B. Carroll becomes the super utility when Rickie comes back. What I can't handle is Carroll being looked at as the solution for SS. It is such short term thinking as well as buying high on a 37 year old player.
  8. Might be willing to take on a portion of Dunn/Rios if Beckham was a part of the deal now.
  9. Welcome back to Milwaukee Bill...you're cheap and free. Ugh. I was all for this earlier this season when Houston DFA'd him but now we need something far more substantial than Hall.
  10. Understood and agreed. I just like that he can play all OF spots, can draw a walk and has some pop, 2 of 3 Kotsay does not have. Additionally, he puts it all out there and always seems to be hustling and trying hard from the games I've seen. A guy I enjoy watching and would be worth to have around as a super utility OF.
  11. He needs to deal for both. Furcal and Barmes would be perfect for the next 3-6 weeks. This would be an ideal as it will provide a decent backup in Barmes at both SS and 2B when Rickie is healthy. Crossing my fingers we can pull this off.
  12. Going to be honest here...If the Cardinals jump out and trade for Furcal it might not matter what move we make to upgrade SS. Adding Furcal to StL would make them the odds on favorite in my opinion. If Rickie hadn't gotten hurt and we traded for a Barmes for SS, I'd still consider us the favorite but Rickie's injury has put us into a situation where we desperately need to make mulitple moves now. Rickie's injury may preclude or limit him even when he comes back. We need to trade for an upgrade at SS and 2B now and role with McGehee. YuBet at SS and Counsell/Wilson/Farris at 2B will kill out chances in my opinion. I think we have to bite the bullet now and do whatever it takes to get Furcal at SS and Barmes or even Carroll at 2B. We need offense in the absence of Rickie and Furcal could bring some of what is missing. While I have been advocating for a D-first SS, Rickie's injury has made that less of a concern. We need an SS upgrade to bring offense and defense and the best option for that is Furcal IMO.
  13. Would have loved him to be the 4th OF in Milwaukee for the rest of the season but that would have meant DFAing Kotsay and we know that's not happening. I would definitely target him in the offseason for a backup role. Love his game.
  14. Not saying that I wanted Rickie to get hurt or anything but his injury may be a blessing in disguise for those of us that have been clamoring for an upgrade to SS/3B. With Rickie's absence, Counsell's abyssmal season continuing, Wilson and Yuni being Wilson and Yuni, it only amplifies the lack of quality players we have on the IF. Farris is not being looked at as a starter at 2B, so our internal solution is Wilson/Counsell platoon? I doubt MA will allow DM to stand pat when we are in 1st so late in the season. This situation screams for the Brewers to acquire someone now to play 2B. Who will that be? The list includes Adam Kennedy, Clint Barmes & Jamey Carroll off the top of my head. Now let's say they acquire Kennedy or Carroll. Carroll has been discussed ad nauseum. Kennedy is 35, but doesn't seem like he has slowed given the last four years his WAR is 1.4, 1.2, 1.0, 1.4. He starts at 2B while Rickie recovers. Rickie comes back and all of a sudden we have a Counsell replacement moving forward. Similarly, with Barmes. We acquire him and he starts at 2B while Rickie recovers. Rickie comes back and all of a sudden we have a Yuni replacement at SS. DFA Yuni, Wilson or Counsell. I hate that it took Rickie's injury to drive home the lack of quality on our bench but if this does not amplify that our bench is terrible, we will be watching StL in the playoffs come October.
  15. Carroll and Furcal will be Brewers if Weeks is hurt as bad as it appeared. Carroll at 2B Furcal at SS.
  16. Thornton is not flat out garbage. He's actually been really really good. This year, I'd say just good, but part of that was being miscast as a closer. His 2008-2010 numbers are pretty awesome. And he's lefthanded. He'd make our bullpen extremely nasty. Rios probably is garbage, but he's a good CF with speed and has hit and hit very well in the past. Now, the $ involved obviously would make this a terrible deal on the surface, but if CWS picks up, say, $40M I wouldn't be too displeased. I'm not high on Gamel really though, so that certainly is part of it for me. I also can't see CWS picking up that much money. Trading our future 1B who is raking in the Minors for two 30+ year old players with bad contracts is the epitome of flat out garbage. Thornton is owed $12MM over the next two seasons. Rios $39MM over the next three. Those are awful numbers. Now, like you said $40MM of the $51MM, yeah I could do that but I doubt they cover that much. Having said all that, I wouldn't mind adding Thornton and/or Rios to be honest with you. However, trading Gamel for these players seems like such an extraordinary overpay to me on the surface. I'm not opposed to trading Gamel but there has to be other teams out there who will deal less expensive, quality players at positions of need (SS/3B) rather than someone to serve as a backup and a relief pitcher.
  17. I think the greater issue is....We are looking to deal Mat Gamel and THIS (Rios/Thornton) is all we can get for him? I mean Gamel is no Bryce Harper, Julio Teheran, Domonic Brown, Jesus Montero type prospect but come on. I would have expected Mat Gamel to at least get a better return than what is being reported. This is flat out garbage and I believe a better deal than this has to exist out there.
  18. Kenny Williams says this and we are in a position to trade a guy like Gamel for him?
  19. Ok. I could get behind this. I'd prefer Braun at 1B though. I still don't like this though. We need 3B/SS. If we are dealing Gamel, why not see if the Mariners would do a Brendan Ryan and Franklin Gutierrez?
  20. Wow...can you say pass? This does nothing to help our 3B/SS situation and we are trading one of our only "prospects" (if you can call Gamel that)/1B of the future for a 30+ year old backup OF and almost 35 year old LRP? This is not a good deal. As a side, if we are dealing Gamel to the White Sox, I think it would almost be mandatory to have Dunn included in the deal. Who plays 1B next season?
  21. If it meant getting Ramirez for Gamel + other prospects, I could get behind a Dunn to Milwaukee trade. Dunn becomes a backup 1B/PH (dare I say RF...YUCK!) for the rest of 2011 and is the 1B when Prince leaves, thereby negating the need for Gamel post-2011. The deal is that Dunn is 31 and owed $44MM over the next 3 seasons. Chicago would have to eat half of that for me to even think of picking him up. Having said that, I'll gladly take over Dunn at 3 years/$22MM if it means also having Alexei at 4 year/$32MM.
  22. I figured that 17 game losing streak might convince them to blow it all up and start over. Anyone with value not named Smoak, Pineda, Ackley or Felix should be up for grabs if I were Jack Z. Ryan would be a perfect sell high candidate in my opinion.
  23. Absoultely second this idea. Once JJ was off the market, Ryan became the best option. I just wish I was hearing more about the Brewers going after him. Firmly believe he is the best option for this team not only in 2011 but also 2012 and possibly 2013. Square away that D up the middle and see what that does for this team.
  24. I still think the best thing the Brewers could do at the deadline is to upgrade SS with a D-first guy like Brendan Ryan and stick him in the #8 hole. I could see them going after a Beckham then for Gamel and sticking Beckham at 3B and going with a totally revamped left side of the IF with Ryan and Beckham. If we deal Gamel for a 34 year old LRP as the centerpiece, I will be quite unhappy.
