  1. Except they also paid Holliday $120 million dollars and got him as a free agent, so Holliday's production as a Cardinal now has no merit being discussed as a part of that trade.
  2. I know we are "all in it for this year", but the Cardinals just traded away 3 more years of a 24 year old CF who is a 3-4 WAR guy now and could peak at 5-6 WAR. Beyond this year, they get a LOOGY and type B draft picks. I think Brewerfan should send Tony LaRussa a thank you card.
  3. As for Thornburg vs. Jungmann's ceiling - what? Jungmann's fastball gives him a #2 type ceiling, especially given his frame and the fact that his mechanics offer promise for more velocity. How many pitchers right now in the top 30-40 in ERA year in and year out are 5'11"? It just doesn't happen often, and this is coming from a guy who likes Thornburg. The major guy who is championing Peralta is Keith Law, and he always liked him. Not sure where else you're getting that from. And BA makes their list by contacting scouts. They design their list to mimic the industry consensus, which is a good thing, because I know that industry scouts who do this professionally know alot more about this than either of us. As for the "right and wrong" debate - sure it's all relative. But I bet they are right alot more than people who look at performance. I could be mean and dig up some old Aumary Rivas quotes from this board to accent the point, but it would be a waste of everyone's time. I didn't "knitpick at how his list was created". All I said was that having a blanket philosophy that you need to show dominance in the minors before being considered a top prospect is silly. And I still maintain that. In fact, I never even quoted his list specifically, then said that the actual list doesn't bother me at all compared to the absolute philosophy of how refuses to rank any non-signed prospect in the top 10. And Khris Davis still isn't an impact MLB bat. If I re-did the list, he'd probably be around the Austin Ross area. The dude is 23 and performed well in High A - that's not overwhelming. His swing is long, he doesn't have tremendous bat speed, and he's stuck at two positions where he would need to absolutely rake to be a valuable player. I don't see it. If he rakes at AA, he'd move up my list a fair bit.
  4. The reason that making players "earn their rankings" is because better pitchers are put lower on the list. It's really that simple. Anyone who does this professionally will tell you (as Jim Callis of BA has done repeatedly) that Jungmann and Bradley are in our top 3 prospects right now before they sign. You lean with whoever you want. I'll go with the people who get paid to do this for a living.
  5. Yes. The extreme example does a great job at pointing out the questionable logic of "I'm not putting any guy without pro experience in the top 10". You can sugarcoat that all you want, but it doesn't make sense. If Jungmann is a better pitching prospect right now than Scarpetta, he should be ranked higher. EDIT: It's worth noting that, while not having Jungmann or Bradley in the top 10 is really extreme, it's not that ranking I have issue with. It's the "no prospect can be a top 10 prospect without pro experience" absolute attitude that was in his first post.
  6. Gotta love Narveson just hacking away at like 7 pitches and making contact. The sooner we get rid of Dempster the better.
  7. I used the example of Strasburg not because it was realistic, but because I think the logic of saying a guy has to do something at the minor league level is foolish. A good prospect is a good prospect regardless of what league they are in.
  8. So you would have rather had Wily Peralta in 2009 than Stephen Strasburg because Strasburg was just "potential to be good"? If the Pirates said they would trade the rights to Gerrit Cole for Cody Scarpetta (I'm aware this is illegal, but hypothetically) and I was Doug Melvin I'd probably have an aneurysm saying yes so quickly.
  9. I'm assuming you mean discount his April, since his May was his best month. Anywho, it's the D'Vo platoon splits that are interesting (for 2 reasons):vs. LHP - .206/.239/.338vs. RHP - .310/.365/.421 1. Because D'Vo is a righty, so they are reverse splits and b2. A .310 average and a .365 OBP against righties with plus (plus?) defense in CF is frickin useful. Adjust for the terrible offensive environment, and we could really have something. You could make the case he's our best position prospect at this point.
  10. Lord knows I'd rather have a leadoff walk than a triple to start the inning. (Nevermind that I think HRs also count for this discussion...)
  11. I don't agree with this. I would say 70% of runners would make an effort there.62.4% of all statistics are made up on the spot.
  12. Okay. Mission this inning - get Volgesong to 100+ pitches and get him out of this game for the 6th so we can get to the underbelly of the Giants' bullpen.
  13. Just get the pitcher. Stranding 2nd and 3rd could be huge.
  14. Great AB by Weeks there. Ate up some pitches, frustrated Vogelsong and got a 2B. Now can Casey or Yuni drive him in?
  15. Cody Ross with a textbook dumb AB for Wolf's benefit. A 1st pitch floyout to right when the wind is screaming out to left field.
  16. With this ump, you really shouldn't swing much at all until you have 2 strikes. The single dumbest thing you can do is make an out 3 pitches or less into an AB.
  17. I know Hart struck out twice in the 1st, but I didn't think that was a strike to Casey.
