  1. There is no way Tampa can keep up with Bos, NY, and Baltimore this year. I'd sell the farm for Archer, but that won't happen. What about Cobb or Odorizzi or Andriese or Snell?
  2. I would do that with no hesitation but don't think that will be nearly enough. Estrada has been a pretty solid starter for the Jays the last few years. If they make him available at the deadline he'd be a pretty attractive rental for most contenders and it wouldn't take much to outbid an offer of Reed. Of course if there were a bidding war, somebody would offer more than just Reed--but the point is there are guys other than just Estrada too. Who might they be, and how much would we be willing to give up? Matt Cain? Who else?
  3. So, disregarding the dream scenario of getting a decent TOR starter that is not a rental--are there any other more traditional type of rentals we could pick up for fairly cheap at the deadline? Assuming that Toronto continues to have most of their aging roster on the DL, they are done for the year. I'd have to think that we could pick up Marco Estrada for somebody like a Michael Reed, no? That might even be too much, and Estrada is pretty good and Reed is somewhere around our 25th best prospect buried a dozen guys deep in the OF. Who would not want to make that trade? Who else could be picked up for cheap?
  4. If Guerra can step in and pick up where he left off last year and Peralta can make the transformation into a very good late inning bullpen guy...Along with Garza finding something...this pitching staff moves from bad to at least decent very quickly. 2 Ws from the back end of the rotation the last couple of days to put us 7 games over .500 could be an important turning point.
  5. Well it was a pretty lengthy delay. 2 hours by the time they get going? It all seemed pretty dumb to me. Anybody can sit and watch the radar and see that it was about to rain. And that it would rain for a couple hours max, and then it would stop. They should have stopped the game at the end of the 4th and let it all blow over. They would have got the tarp on much sooner and there would be no need to do much ground work after it quit raining 40 minutes ago.
  6. This had to be a scheduling snafu by somebody, no? Yesterday's game ended at around 6 PM central time in San Diego, then they have to play an afternoon game in Chicago the next day?
  7. I'd rather have Archer and Teheran, but I'd be okay with Quintana and Teheran if we get to keep Brinson, Ortiz and Woodruff. Everybody else can go. Hader, Ray, Phillips, Diaz, Cordell, Santana, Clark and Madeiros for Q and T. They are both off to slow starts. Buy low now, stearns.
  8. This sounds like he wants a job. After all, 30+ year old journeymen named Eric is the new market inefficiency, no?
  9. If Lee Tunnell and Marcus Hannel get caught in a freak traffic jam and miss the plane for a road trip, Darnell Coles gets shingles and is out for a coupla weeks, Counsell and Pat Murphy get thrown out of a game and Windmill Ed catches a line drive in the temple, Is Derek Johnson the 1st base coach, pitching coach, hitting coach AND active manager? Who would coach the yahoos in the bullpen!?!? There are certain ifs, buts, and what-have-yous that are more important than others.
  10. I don't know, I'm kinda ok with talk like that. It's not true at all, and is definitely mostly garbage but it does help give an explanation to the casual fans. The casual fan loves to think his team wants it more and is full of born winners that just get the jobs done. They don't want to hear a bunch of stats they've never heard of. With local sports talk radio, why not simplify things a bit so maybe more casual fans come out and enjoy a game? Even if it's not really true. It may not be true and it is certainly not sufficient, but it is completely necessary.
  11. In a grander organizational sense--Why has it been bad for 30 years? Is it all just dumb luck that we can't develop pitching?
  12. "Usually?" I'm struggling to come up with ONE pitcher who came through the system in the last 30 years and exceeded his projected ceiling as a prospect. It's difficult to even find guys who've MATCHED expectations. Sheets and Gallardo hit their reasonable ceilings. Then...
  13. It's fun to have 2 bench guys who most everybody agrees need to be in the lineup everyday--and that does not even account for the "backup" catcher--whoever that is.
  14. I've been trying to follow the MLB draft for a few years now--the first one I really paid attention to was the Jungmann/Bradley draft. I don't think I will ever fully understand the "slot" system. I guess that is the point. The MLBPA is the strongest and oldest union, thus many lawyers have been involved for many years--thus any chance of a common sense understanding of the system has long ago been lost... c'est la vie. As far as I understand it (ha!) the age and options for the upcoming year for a drafted player gives them leverage to sign or not sign? Thus the term "senior sign?" As a college player with no eligibility left has almost no options/leverage to not sign? Occasionally, HS guys will only sign for LOTS of dough or else just go to college? What about the in between? How many college soph/jrs get drafted, then holdout and don't sign in order to return to school the next year? They are then eligible for the draft the next year? But HS guys have to go to college for 3 years if they refuse to sign?
  15. That sounds like what Doug Melvin did, and that failed pretty consistently. Have to try to win something at some point though otherwise, what is the point? To make massive year-to-year profits, making the books look good to eventually sell the team for a head shaking return?
  16. There should be nothing untouchable about Bellinger. He's a slightly better prospect than Hader. He's about to turn 22 and slashed .263/.359/.484 at AA last year as a first basemen. Big whoop. Braun would is a borderline HOF talent with a few good years left, and Thames looks pretty good. I'll happily keep those guys if the rest of the league is that enamored with their unproven prospects.
  17. How long you been living in Italy? kalle8 IS actually Italian. Not an expat.
  18. It's bad primarily because they have exactly 0 reliable pitchers, which means they need a lot of new guys to come in before it can be considered a playoff quality staff. There are enough decent arms to fill out the back end of a rotation and the backend of a bullpen.....but even then those guys we'd be using would have a short track record of success, so relying on whoever pitches well in those spots to continue to pitch well into future seasons would be a significant gamble. We aren't alone in this problem though. Pitching is fickle.
  19. Aye, "major asset." The masses of us are fanatical rubes, and the spectrum of our assets is wide and vast--sold as Rays of hope to the Haders. If we lose a Cordell or a Woodruff or a Nottingham, only time will tell if "major" was actually "minor." At this point, they are all in the Minors, no? Except for our 21 Wins?
  20. It's difficult to know. We've accumulated dozens of scrapheap players and fringy/aging prospects the last couple of years, and we've kept the guys who have been hot (namely Villar, Guerra, Broxton, Perez, and recently Thames, Bandy, and Shaw). It's not likely they stay hot-- and we still desperately need pitching. If Guerra comes back strong and Garza finds the fountain of youth, it might be fun to acquire another starter and a bullpen arm at the deadline as long as we don't actually give up anything super-promising. We have enough minor league depth that we are going to need to do this anyway as when next year rolls around we will likely be losing a lot of the fringy older prospects regardless--so a trade here or there to make August and September exciting wouldn't be the end of the world.
  21. I haven't read through this whole thread and won't, but what about a Braun+Hader+etc. for Julio Urias? Could we make something like that work? Braun+Thames+Hader for Urias+Bellinger+??
  22. Depends what you mean by "affecting the future" Personally, I'd unload a lot of our prospects plus Braun to land a pair of guys/contracts like Chris Archer and Julio Teheran. TOR WHOAHSSOLVDD. BF goes nuts, Brewers win the pennant in 2017/18, and still have everybody back for '19, '20, and losing only Teheran in '21.
