  1. When he hits a bases clearing double to win game 6 in the NLCS, yes. A good move. We can't trade him for known MLB roster filler. It's either young high ceiling prospects or we hold onto him.
  2. Sadly yes. I'm not losing sleep over not having those two though. Well put. If we end up keeping Braun and making the playoffs before he retires, holding onto him will be the best non-move Stearns ever didn't make.
  3. Because no patience. The hate for Arcia because he looks like a rookie while still in his rookie year. Cant have that at 22. Its .950 OPS or move on. Oh but wait, is that right? With Villar and Santana its the lacking of GG defense. Brinson, Perez, Dubon are all going to be these requirements. AS or bust! Well, when you come up within a year or two of Corey Seager, Xander Bogaerts, Francisco Lindor, Trevor Story, Manny Machado, Carlos Correa, and displace guys like Jonathan Villar and Jean Segura... expectations might be a little skewed.
  4. I thought Archer was 26. He's 28. Those are 2 important years, even if I kind of supported the opposite argument in that other thread. I'd try to keep Arcia in that case, maybe put in Lopez and McClanahan instead.
  5. Are you talking about 2015? They made the playoffs in 2015 after trading for Gomez and Fiers. I'm guessing jericho was joking? Since clearly, Houston mortgaged their future with that trade. What are they, 30-15 right now? Perhaps Stearns will trade Santana, Phillips, Hader and Houser this summer. Hopefully we are 30-15 at this point in 2019.
  6. Because Archer, Cobb, Garza, Guerra, and Nelson is a good rotation. Archer, Garza, Guerra, Nelson, and ??? might be an okay rotation. We have the depth to trade and Tampa is going to need a haul to pry Archer away from them, and they are losing Cobb anyway after the year (so would we, but this would only theoretically work if we are in it in July and they are not in it. It's still probably only theoretical)
  7. While I am all for acquiring TOR talent like Archer and Cobb...this would absolutely GUT the system. This would likely mean Villar moves to SS, Brinson moves to RF, Perez/Franklin/Sogard at 2B. While I would love to acquire these guys, (especially given Archer is not a FA until after 2021, although Cobb is one after this season) it seems more like a Dombrowski-big market move than a Stearns-small market one. Cordell and Dubon are still there too. And Woodruff, Hader, Ortiz, Lopez. And Burnes, Bickford, and Pennington. And the Carolina lineup except for Ray.
  8. We still don't know what we have with Broxton, but at the very least it looks like he is a starting caliber CF with what, 5 years of cheap control? At most, he's an all-star. If he is still hitting in July, then I'd think that Broxton-Davies-Bickford would be a decent offer for Quintana. Arcia-Davies-Phillips would work for me too. Maybe Santana-Arcia-Davies. I'm still pushing for a Santana, Arcia, Phillips, Ray, Davies, Medeiros and Supak for Chris Archer and Alex Cobb. Tampa loves controllable young talent, right?
  9. It might be worrisome to "buy" at the deadline if we were a fringe contender with a roster full of aging veterans and a depleted farm system. That isn't this team, though, and we aren't at the deadline yet.
  10. Yeah. You can't do major deals within the division. Bench moves, minor league roster filler moves, sending veterans back home a la Aramis Ramirez-to-Pittsburgh type moves are fine, but this one is a little too risky for both sides. That said, if the Brewers, Reds, and Pirates all trade with each other in order to keep the Cubs or Cards from winning the division...
  11. Almost every one of the pitchers you listed as Top 16-30 are VERY inconsistent. Quintana is the only one I'd consider to have anywhere near a playoff caliber ACE type track record and he's 28. You pretty much illistrated my point. I think both sides have a point here. If you take all pitchers 26 years old and under, there might be one guy who is considered an ace. Further, it is difficult to predict which pitchers of the dozens of guys 26 and younger will be an ace when they are 29. However, if you look at all the 28/29 year olds in the league, it is much easier to predict their next 2 or 3 years of production. Perhaps they fall off slightly from their 28 year old peak, but they are usually still aces at 31/32.
  12. Zack Greinke is still better than all of those guys.
  13. Bump, cuz I was asking these questions in this years thread. Thanks to all of you who posted in here last year .
  14. Interesting not a huge fan of the pick, but the fact that we're supposedly cutting deals is news to me. http://www.scout.com/mlb/scouting/story/1779690-ward-mock-draft-3-0 This is where I get confused. A guy like Tristan Beck may be available at 34, but he may/will demand a slot value of maybe the #10 pick in order to sign him? Since he can go back to Stanford next year? So we'll draft a guy who will sign for underslot at #9 who likely won't be available at #34, but enable us to keep more bonus pools signing money? EDIT: I think I got most of the answers I was looking for in that other thread i bumped. EXCEPT: Why is Tristan Beck eligible for the draft after his Soph year? I thought the rule was 3 yrs in school? Also, why aren't there more juniors who are drafted? It seems like most of the college guys are "4yr senior sign" guys. TIA.
  15. BPA is totally correct as far as the draft goes, but that won't mean I might wince a little if we get Jeren Kendall at #9 and we don't make any trades this summer. ThassalottaOFers. Plus, the MLB club picked up Broxton, Perez, Shaw, Thames, and Bandy for next to nothing, and they are all young (minus Thames) and are all producing like all-stars. It sure seems like pitching is once again at a premium league wide right now. Four years ago that wasn't the case, so maybe 4 years from now the cycle might switch back again. It's hard to say.
  16. That took some work. Nice post. Quibble: Brandon Phillips will be 38 in 2020.
  17. Rangers? Cole Ragans, Alex Speas, Jonathan Hernandez and Mike Matuella?
  18. I'd say those $200M contracts don't work out even less so for pitchers. Harper and Machado are going to get paid, and I think they'll be more worth whatever deals they get than paying Max Scherzer $35M/yr in '19, '20, and '21.
  19. What about the Yankees? Chance Adams, Albert Abreu, Nolan Martinez and Ian Clarkin? Would this be good enough for both sides? Throw in Jorge Guzman for fun?
  20. Yeah. There are like 6 of them in the world. It would be nice to have one.
  21. I'd wait. If Cozart is still OPSing .900+ on the 4th of July and Arcia is still sub .650 and we are still in playoff position, then those guys could help the team. I think it's more likely that Cozart comes back to earth and Arcia slowly improves, which means that acquiring a 32 year old SS would be kind of dumb. Same story for Storen. They just don't improve the club enough in either the short term or the longer term to make much sense. We don't need more offense.
  22. I like the way you think. What tandem is more valuable? Arcia-Villar or Dubon-Diaz? Or some other combination? Villar just turned 26, and has the best MLB track record, so he may have the most value--but I'd have no problem trading him to get some pitching.
  23. YES! If we trade away Ray, Hader, Cordell, and Reed and for Marco Estrada and Roberto Osuna-- Then trade Braun away in December for 3 more young guys--did we buy or sell?
  24. I completely understand the re-build, and I'm all for it. The thing is, the MLB Roster is already very young. Our farm system is very deep (or so I'm told). We can only put 25 guys on the roster at the same time, and we keep drafting more guys every year. If we don't trade some of these guys, we lose them for nothing, so we might as well try to improve the MLB club for a fun little run while we are in it. Of course, you should be smart about it--you should always be smart about--but it shouldn't be wholly dismissed right of the bat.
  25. 60 degrees, overcast with a little bit of wind is miserable weather?
