  1. This is true against lefties. Against righties we have Morgan in the 2-spot and Hart at 6. Since we'll be facing a lot more righties than southpaws I don't really see it. The only consistent hole on the team is Betancourt and whenever Gomez plays. McGehee should at least have his moments, as well as Lucroy. Also, when 3 of the top 4 guys in the lineup are of MVP caliber I think the offense is just fine.
  2. Yeah, I don't get this at all. The only problem with our pitching staff is a rash of injuries/disorders out of the bullpen and 3 bad outings by Loe. Overall, everything else has been dandy. Inconsistency is actually to be expected from pitchers, so you basically have to look at the overall performance and results, and there is a good discussion about that in the Greinke thread. If Gallardo and Greinke still have these numbers in September then there might be a case to be had for those guys underperforming, but they have each passed the eye test and enough advanced stats say that things will even out for them in the long run that any concern right now is a bit premature. I never really expected Stetter and Dillard to ever pitch for us this year, so anything positive that they would have given us would have been a bonus. The injury list of: Greinke, Hawkins, Saito, Parra, Braddock, and Kintzler is far more to blame than Kranitz.
  3. Zack's pitching to lower his FIP is very interesting and could perhaps be telling. It would support the theory that he isn't careful enough with guys after he is behind in the count, since a walk would hurt his FIP a lot more than a double, even though a double would hurt the team a lot more than a walk. The goal should be to win the game, not lower your FIP. Sometimes you need to be more aggressive with batters and sometimes you need to be more careful with batters in order to maximize your chances of winning the game. Fielding is a large part of playing winning baseball, so ignoring that within the context of a single game just doesn't make sense. I'm probably reading too much into those comments, but I still think it's pretty interesting.
  4. Good question, and I'd follow up with why don't we hit more 3 run shots? These two questions have been epically frustrating this year.
  5. Saito and Braddock can't get back soon enough. Or Kintzler. Why Dillard gets more time than Mitre is a bit odd to me.
  6. God Bless Uke...but hopefully this game gets out of hand so he can really shine. Fielder's hit sounded like it was going to be a single, and then suddenly it was a double play. Just playing with me.
  7. He has turned the corner, yes. How long he continues to head in the direction he is facing is yet to be seen. There is plenty of time for his numbers to head south again.
  8. Just being a technical nit-picker here, but you likely had a "lower respiratory infection" if you had pnemonia/influenza. URI infections can spread and lead to other things that are very nasty (which you can die from), but I'm not sure if anybody has ever actually died from a URI.
  9. Bill: "Home run's a rally killer here." It was tongue-in-cheek, but sometimes you just aren't sure with him.
  10. ugh. Niemann misses by the width of the plate but paints it on the black anyway.
  11. Casey just missed a couple of very hittable pitchers there. Good AB anyway.
  12. Nice job of Roenicke stepping in front of Morgan there before he completely goes ballistic.
  13. That was very un-Narveson like, getting out of a major jam.
  14. In what way? I could see that a left handed 2nd baseman would have an easier time throwing to second base (at the cost of making it more difficult to throw to first), I don't see how left-handedness would be helpful for a SS on a DP. There is a reason why no infielders (other than 1b) are left handed. Not one inning in 14 years, according to Baldkin. Because a SS is moving to his left as he is making the turn, both toward 1st base and away from the runner. Still, it's a lot easier for a right handed SS to turn DPs than it is for a left handed SS to make any routine-to-difficult play while ranging to his right.
  15. Earlier in the home run AB, Coleman (KC pitcher) had the gall to throw a high and tight fastball to Pujols. Albert stared him down and looked like he wanted to charge the mound. It was basically a pitch near his elbow. I guess Albert wasn't intimidated.
  16. Wrist injuries for baseball players are pretty devastating, as Rickie Weeks can attest. Pujols' injury probably has nothing to do with tendon sheaths, but it is still going to be very difficult to swing a baseball bat without discomfort for a long, long time. Luck almost always has to be on a team's side to make the playoffs, but this isn't the sort of luck anybody hopes for. Wainwright out for the year and now this.
  17. Wow. I've never seen that before. Wakefield tried to pick Scutaro so he wouldn't collide with Gonzo on the pop-up. It looked like mass confusion.
  18. So bad starts happen, but the odds of Greinke, Marcum and Gallardo having starts like this back-to-back-to-back are not very good and very annoying. At least Wolf stepped up big yesterday.
  19. Sure beats good managing and bad results /Macha.
  20. Heck of a job by Loe. Three soft grounders just like the script.
  21. Well, we are almost halfway through the Randy Wolf contract, and so far I'd have to say that it has been a success. He started off so poorly last year that he had a lot of ground to make up with the fans. His last 30 starts or so have been relatively outstanding.
  22. I can't think of a worse possible matchup for Loe than the Red Sox. On the other hand, Braddock wouldn't be too bad (relatively speaking).
  23. Oofta. That would have been great if Wilson just backpedaled there and made the catch instead of trying for the leaping stab.
