nope, CC tempting fate... He is really trying to shoehorn Claudio into a multi-inning role, and I'm just not sure that's who he is. He's excellent against lefties, though, and that has a lot of value. With a 4 run lead and a lefty on deck it's not really a problem for Claudio to face a righty. Unless there are guys on base and that guy has power (a la Alonso the other day)

Might as well bring Claudio back out to face Murphy. Then Guerra. Then have Hader warm to close if needed.

In general I hate bureaucratic legalese just as much as the next guy, but for some reason I get a kick out of djoctogone explicitly stating what is happening to the roster during all of his posts in this thread.. Thank you.

It's weird how some nights guys just don't have a chance against Hader and other nights you are worried about a walk or a gopher ball. Much easier said after getting 6 straight outs, but tonight it sure seemed like he had it.

He's just that bad against RHP. Frankly I'd like to see them try the Joe Maddon strategy at some point where you stick Claudio out in a corner OF spot for one AB if you just need to get through one righty. I'd be all about that! Perfect scenario for that kind of strategy--provided Claudio is a competent athlete--and since he's an MLB player he's probably a competent athlete.

Claudio facing any righty in a big spot is a strategy that is pretty easy to argue with. So, what should have been done? Give up a dinger to Cano or Conforto instead? That was predictable. It's hard to argue with the strategy though. Worst possible scenario and we still have the lead.

I've thought about that quite a bit. It's a credit to them both to bounce back strong after losing their starting spots. Heck, Thames even lost his bench spot to Granderson at the end of last year. They are both talented players who've had quite a bit of success and their resilience is certainly showing this year.

To Extend or Not Extend: Jeremy Jeffress

He has pitched. Poorly. Against weak competition, 3-7 MPH slower than his peak. Perhaps it is all adrenaline with him and everything will be dandy in an MLB atmosphere. Apparently that's what the decision makers think, but it's hardly comical to be skeptical and want a few more innings in AAA where he actually...ya know...pitches decently before being brought up to The Show. -
The Brewers scored a run in the bottom of the 8th to push the lead to 4. Entering the top of the 8th the Brewers were ahead 9-6. Counsell was giving garbage outings to Barnes early. However, Barnes has clearly been one of the more effective pitchers out of the bullpen so far. Counsell putting him in a game in a hold situation against a team 1/2 game behind in the standings with Martinez, Carpenter, Goldschmidt and DeJong due up is a high leverage situation. The thing that always has annoyed me about the foolish "closer" role is, wouldn't it have made more sense to have the #1 reliever pitch against these guys? But that's another discussion. I'm not exactly sure what you guys are saying. If it was a 7-6 game, Hader likely would have had the 8th and 9th. In a 3 (or 4) run game, you give Barnes the ball and KNOW that you have Hader to come in if things go south and you probably still get the win. If you bring Hader in right away with that lead and he gives up 2 or 3 runs you probably still have to keep him in the game AND risk losing the game AND lose Hader for the rest of the series. That's a whole lot of bad things that could happen if you plan on Hader for 2. With Barnes, you might slightly lower your chances to win the game but will still have Hader for today or tomorrow.
