I don’t think the Brewers will admit to being either buyers or sellers over the next four days, but I wouldn’t be opposed to them taking a chance on acquiring some mid-20s players that haven’t broken through with others clubs based on being blocked or whatever other reason. Every once in awhile those guys click and can turn into future impact pieces (a good example from this year is Jake Cronenworth whom the Padres acquired from the Rays).
Hiura has made a couple of solid defensive plays tonight. He’s struggled defensively this year on some pretty routine plays, so nice to see him make plays tonight.
I’m going to say it one more time, and then I’ll move on (for tonight). Luis Urias should be leading off against LHPs. It’s one thing he’s really good at, yet he only got one at bat against Miley tonight because he was buried at the bottom of the lineup.
Speaking of Hader, it’s sort of incredible that he hasn’t even thrown 10 innings yet this year. If this was a 162-game season he would be on pace to throw less than 50 innings. The past two years he’s thrown 81.1 IP and 75.2 IP.
Coming into tonight Miley had give up 13 hits, 7 walks, 10 runs (9 earned) in just 8.1 IP this season. So far this game isn’t far from ranking along with the Derek Holland game as my most disappointing outcome for this offense versus a starting pitcher.
Not so much on that one, but his exit velocity this year is averaging over 88-mph which is basically exactly MLB average among all hitters. He is among the top 5 players in the game in swinging contact rate, so he’s certainly got some ingredients to be optimistic about.
For his MLB career versus left-handed pitchers Luis Urias is hitting .358 BA / .395 OBP / .543 SLG / .939 OPS. He’ll get his first, and possibly only, at bat against Wade Miley to leadoff the 3rd inning.
From Adam McCalvy: The Brewers will play from behind for the second time tonight. As the season reaches its halfway point, Milwaukee's opponent has scored first in 23 of 30 games.
After the Cardinals pulled off an improbable comeback win against the Royals last night to avoid losing that series at home, the Pirates flew into St. Louis for a one day double header and raise the Jolly Roger by sweeping the Cardinals. The Brewers series against the Pirates this weekend with a looming trade deadline seems very important.
After his first two at bats today his wRC+ is up to 96. If he surpasses 100 by the end of the night an appreciation thread may be in order. Now a 101 wRC+. Officially an above average hitter!
Can you imagine telling your October of 2018 self that with just over a month remaining in the 2020 season there would be a day where the starting infield would consist of: Eric Sogard (3B), Orlando Arcia (SS), Jace Peterson (2B), Justin Smoak (1B)
I support the teams that came to the collective decision they wouldn’t play tonight. I was somewhat surprised by the teams that proceeded despite having players sit out this evening (Cubs Jason Heyward, Cardinals Dexter Fowler and Jack Flaherty).
