  1. Between the glacial pace and the missed opportunities this is “one to forget” as they say that in reality won’t be easily forgotten if the rest of this 4-game series goes sideways.
  2. Kyle Freeland was 4th in the NL Cy Young voting and they beat him already this year as well! Edit: And they’ve beaten Miles Mikolas who was 6th in the voting last year.
  3. Definitely a waste of a challenge. Someday I would like a better explanation of who/how the advisory role works for the Brewers on those challenges.
  4. As others have mentioned, the Super Two cutoff has no bearing on his years of control, but does delay his eligibility for arbitration by a year (the difference is 4 years of arbitration versus 3 years of arbitration). That obviously matters most if he turns into a star and would be in line for a much larger raise prior to the 2022 season if he was arbitration eligible. At this point the Brewers will have Hiura under contract through the 2025 season regardless of when he is called up. That would be his age 28 season. The only way the Brewers could ensure an additional year of control at this point would be to wait until mid-April of 2020 for him to make his debut. The cut-off for a player to gain a complete year of services is 172 days even though there are 187 in the MLB calendar from start to finish. That is why players like Vlad Jr. didn’t come up until late April. Making sure he was under the 172 services days for 2019 basically gave the team a 7th year of control, but he will be eligible for arbitration a year earlier than if the Blue Jays had waited until June to call him up.

  6. After how large the zone has been all night this pitch to David Bote was called a ball...
  7. Here is the footage of the cameraman being tossed if anyone’s interested...
  8. It is the 7th inning already, probably wouldn’t have been a bad idea.
  9. Tonight’s strike zone is making the game not so enjoyable to watch. You shouldn’t have to hold your breath on every pitch 3+ inches outside the zone.
  10. I think they’re right to criticize Aguilar’s base-running on that play to home. He may have been out regardless, but he never really gave himself a chance between the lack of anticipation for a ball in play and the fact he kept looking back at the ball as he was “running”.
  11. I don’t understand why Aguilar was staring at that ball in play the whole time. Once you’re committed just run home full steam ahead.
  12. Alright, got something cooking. Time to put up a crooked number while simultaneously chasing Lester from this game!
  13. One thing I somehow neglected was the fact Lewis Brinson was obviously called up in the Stearns era as well. He was called up on June 11th in 2017. For now I am sticking with my June 4th prediction for Hiura’s first major league game.
  14. Seems like Lorenzo Cain is channeling Carlos Gomez on some of these swings tonight.
  15. That call completely changes the complexion of the at bat with the bases loaded. Frustrating.
  16. Aside from having the bases loaded with a possibility for more runs this has been a big inning in terms of limiting the distance Lester can go tonight.
  17. I thought Aguilar did a nice job of focusing on making contact in his at bat versus Lester.
  18. Orlando Arcia’s Statcast sprint speed (26.5 ft/sec) is slower than Pete Alonso’s mark (26.6 ft/sec). Edit: Arcia’s sprint speed ranks tied for 234th among major leaguers this season.

  20. I guess one not exactly apples-to-apples comparison of a recent post call-up service time manipulation is Tampa Bay sent Austin Meadows to Triple-A last August/September after they acquired him from the Pirates even though he had been holding his own at the major league level since mid-May.
  21. Thing is, you can get him up now and still make sure he misses the cutoff. Just plan to send him down for awhile later when you've got some righty heavy matchups coming up or he goes into a bit of a slump. That is true, but I am curious if that is an approach they are willing to take with a top prospect? To this point the only top position prospect called up during Stearns’ tenure is Orlando Arcia, and it is hard to glean much from that example. They called Arcia up in early August of 2016 and then kept him up the entire next season. It wasn’t until his performance dictated being sent down last season that he was shuttled to the minors. Certainly a different set of circumstances in many respects. Does anyone remember or know of an example of a top hitting prospect that was called up early in a season and then sent back to the minors seemingly for service time manipulation? There may very well be some, but I can’t think of a recent example. There are examples of guys like Kyle Tucker being called up midseason who returned back to the minors, but that was mostly performance driven. When they do ultimately call Hiura up I think it would be in his best interest for it to be within the context of being a major league contributor for the foreseeable future. Obviously performance could dictate other outcomes, but I will be somewhat surprised if they call him up with idea of shuttling him back to Triple-A very shortly thereafter.
  22. There is no way to know for sure, it depends where the cutoff is going to be set when calculated in a few years. The goal would be that at the end of 2021 his total number of service days would be outside of the top 22% of players with between two and three seasons of MLB service. Below are the past cutoffs for number of service years and days... 2018: 2.134 2017: 2.123 2016: 2.131 2015: 2.130 2014: 2.133 2013: 2.122 2012: 2.140 2011: 2.146 2010: 2.122 2009: 2.139 On June 1st there will be a 121 service days remaining in 2019. That would be lower than any number in the past decade, and likely safe from the Super Two cutoff. Tuesday, May 21st would be 132 service days remaining which is very close to the typical cutoff. This coming Monday would be 140 service days remaining and would very likely be on the wrong side of the Super Two cutoff.
