  1. Over the past month (since April 5) Orlando Arcia is hitting .287 BA / .330 OBP / .435 SLG. Since this is the optimism thread I will say that .766 OPS is likely the new normal for Arcia, but I will acknowledge there is a chance he may currently be outperforming expectations with the bat.
  2. Took a look at where Brandon Woodruff currently ranks among all qualified major league starters in a handful of categories... 13th in Strikeouts (54 total) 9th in K/9 (11.48) 15th in K% (29.7%) 40th in BB/9 (2.55) 25th in HR/9 (0.85) 59th in ERA (4.25) 9th in FIP (2.87) 13th in xFIP (3.32) 11th in fWAR (1.2) 68th in WHIP (1.37) Dead Last in BABIP (.385) There are only ten guys even within 50 percentage points of his BABIP. That is seemingly an unsustainably high BABIP that is almost assuredly going to lower as the season progresses. In other words I am buying into Brandon Woodruff from this point moving forward.

  4. The Brewers are 8-1 against the vaunted National League East!
  5. And on the flip side of that the Nationals have to fly to LA after the game for a series against the Dodgers starting tomorrow. But to be fair it seems like the Nationals have played this entire series with a get-away day lineup.
  6. I should have stated that differently. I do think the Marlins would trade with the Brewers, but I also think with the current perception that the Brewers fleeced them for a league MVP hanging over their heads they would proceed with caution and likely ask for a premium. Is that somewhat foolish? Absolutely. Do I think the Marlins are above acting foolishly? Not at all. Somewhat relatedly, here is the latest example of the dysfunction from the top of the Marlins org chart, Ken Rosenthal: Derek Jeter’s right-hand man is tearing up a franchise and creating enemies along the way (The Athletic) Lastly, I watched some of Caleb Smith’s outing against the Cubs last night and he looks like the real deal to me.

  8. So now that the Brewers have manufactured four runs this inning I am going to throw this stat out there... the Brewers have just one home run (Yelich) in their last 44 offensive frames at Miller Park.
  9. Aguilar is fine. Kurt Suzuki is hurt. Edit: But staying in the game apparently. He was bleeding out of the ear after the ball deflected off Aguilar’s stomach into the side of Suzuki’s head.
  10. Gamel sort of epitomizes the theory of “put it in play and good things will happen”.
  11. Travis Shaw currently has a lower BA (.174), OBP (.259), and OPS (.565) than the Orioles Chris Davis. He also isn’t too far from surpassing Davis in K% with Shaw currently sitting at 31.1%.

  13. I saw someone recently comp Hiura’s career projections to Michael Young. I actually thought that was a pretty good baseline to use for an over/under type performance projection for Hiura’s career. Personally I think he’ll have a touch more power than Young with a bit lower OBP. Some will probably scoff at that baseline comp, but remember that Young was a solid player (and a 7-time All Star).
  14. Hauser starting tomorrow in the role of “the opener” with Freddy Peralta coming into the game following Hauser. I’ll go on the record saying I like it.

  16. Let’s just assume the Brewers do want to get Hiura’s bat in the lineup this season. I think a possible date to call him up would be Tuesday, June 4th. It is coming off of a road trip and following a Monday day off for both the Brewers and the Missions. It is the start to a home stand versus the Marlins and Pirates. It would also likely be just clear of the Super Two cutoff. It is impossible to know for sure at this point and they would obviously have to alter the roster in some significant way, but if they are already certain they want to bring up Hiura when he clears the Super Two hurdle then June 4th is my prediction.
  17. Here are the number of innings pitched per start this year for both of today’s starters: Vargas: 5.0, 0.1, 4.0, 4.2, 5.1 Davies: 5.0, 5.2, 7.0, 5.0, 4.2, 5.1 If ever there was a day where the teams needed their starters to go 6-7 innings, today is it. After last night’s affair whichever starter can go the furthest may have a big impact on the outcome of this one and leave the teams in a better position for their games heading into the week (Mets play a series at San Diego starting Monday night).

  19. If you extrapolate each NL Central team based solely on current winning percentage here is the pace every team is on: Cardinals - 98 wins Cubs - 97 wins Brewers - 88 wins Pirates - 82 wins Reds - 69 wins
  20. Counsell said Chacín would have pitched next although he had thought about using Hernan Pérez. The latter would have left them with an interesting shortstop situation.
  21. Corbin Burnes with a nice outing out of the bullpen tonight. He seemed to command the edges of the zone much better than his previous appearances. I am hopeful he can serve as an above average bullpen arm for the time being.
  22. If anyone is curious Flexen has had reverse splits for his (short) career and right handed batters hit him very well. As in a 1.081 OPS for RHB.
