  1. I don’t have a great feeling about Monday’s game, but I am confident the Brewers will win at least one in LA and bring it back to Milwaukee. I think this series is going to last seven games. I can’t even imagine how stressful a Game 7 in this series would be.
  2. I completely understand being skeptical of any prospect, even the most highly rated of them. The reason I am so excited for Hiura’s future is that I believe he has an elite ability to barrel the ball, and I think that skill is the most predictive of future success. I believe he is going to develop into a high contact hitter at the major league level. He has a chance to become a very valuable bat hitting near the middle of the Brewers lineup as early as part way through next season.
  3. Also noticed the first couple of the rows of seats in some of the Loge level sections have been removed for additional network TV cameras.
  4. I think those stats are fairly telling. The Brewers have hit more home runs (4 vs. 2). And have had both games decided by one run. Even just a couple of more hits with runners in scoring position and the Brewers are likely sitting on a 2-0 series lead with a great chance to advance to the World Series.
  5. Why does my heart feel like it’s dropping into my stomach on every pitch so far? Being at the game yesterday was less stressful than watching on TV today.
  6. Both Dave Roberts yesterday and Chris Taylor today alluded to having an advantage in that they got a chance to face most of the Brewers relievers last night. Seems like they think the more looks they get against those guys early in the series the better off they will be later on. I am not sure if I prescribe to that line of thinking, but found it interesting.
  7. I was looking at those splits last night. He has fairly large reverse splits both this year and for his career. 2018: Career:
  8. Well, I have news for you: Baseball Prospectus Mid-Season Top 50 I realize I cherry picked a little since that is the only publication to currently rank him in the top five, but I think his stock arrow is definitely pointed up right now. I also think Baseball Prospectus is one of the better prospect resources.
  9. The Brewers could finish the season by going 7-6 from here on out. If they did, they would be World Champions.

  11. Angel is on the graph, he isn’t listed as great but also isn’t near the worst of them. For some of the umpires you have to click the dots to have their names appear.
  12. They left off Scott Alexander which is equally a surprise, but if I was a fan of the Dodgers I would rather have Urias than Alexander as the lefty out of the pen. Alexander made 3 appearances against the Brewers this season, pitching 3.1 innings and allowing 2 earned runs on 3 hits, 3 walks, and 4 strikeouts. Rolling the dice with Urias may appear to be a bit of risk, but it could payoff big-time if Urias has his best stuff.
  13. The schedule for the home plate umpires in this series is as follows... Game #1: Scott Barry Game #2: Alan Porter Game #3: Gerry Davis (crew chief) Game #4: Hunter Wendelstedt Game #5: Jim Wolf Game #6: Brian Gorman Game #7: Greg Gibson Here is a great resource for evaluating how accurate each home plate umpire is: Plot of Called Balls in Strike Zone (BiZ%) and Called Strikes Outside of Strike Zone (SoZ%) You have to zoom in to find some of the umpires. The “best” home plate umpires are the ones in the upper right corner of the graph. Game two home plate umpire Alan Porter for instance is very good as compared to his peers. Of the pitches Porter has called balls just 6.2% were actually in the strike zone (good), and of the pitches Porter has called strikes just 13.9% were actually balls (very good). Others in this series have a much higher SoZ% including Davis (20.5%), Gorman (19.9%), Wendelstedt (18.4%), Barry (17.9%), and Wolf (17.6%). Potential Game #7 home plate umpire Gibson is also solid at 15.6% of his called strikes actually being outside the zone.
  14. NLCS Game #1 In-Game Thread now posted and open for commentary. Let’s Gooooooo!

  16. Only 36 hours to first pitch of this series! I can’t wait.
  17. One thing that has oddly given me a bit a confidence heading into this NLCS matchup is how the Cardinals beat the Brewers in 2011. That series the Cardinals didn’t have a single starting pitcher go more than 5 innings pitched in a game (their starters IP totals were 4.0, 4.1, 5.0, 4.1, 4.2, 2.0). In the 6 games, they had two relievers that appeared in 5 of them (Lynn, Rzepczynski) and three other relievers appear in 4 of the games (Dotel, Motte, Salas). Those five relievers combined to pitch a total of 24.2 innings throughout the series and gave up just 3 earned runs to a potent Brewers offense. The Brewers were just totally shutdown in the second half of most of those games. For the Brewers to beat the Dodgers I think they will need a similar blueprint.
  18. Christian Yelich in his career is 9-for-17, with a double, 2 home runs, and a walk against Clayton Kershaw.
  19. I watched the clip, and it seemed pretty innocuous. I think getting riled up over that is close to the equivalent of Cubs fans throwing a fit about Jesús saying the Cubs know they have a problem on their hands prior to Game 163.
  20. On the one hand the Dodgers look really, really good. I believe they had the best hitting and best pitching in the National League over the second half of the season. They look close to a complete team to me, maybe the bullpen is the one spot they could be a little stronger. On the other hand this is baseball, a sport in which the Dodgers lost a combined 10 games to the Reds (1-6) and Marlins (2-4) this season. One thing that gives me a little extra hope is that the Brewers record against the rest of NL West this season was 23-6. The Brewers really dominated the teams the Dodgers played the most frequently this season. The Brewers were 3-4 against the Dodgers, but with the exception of one really poor performance by Milwaukee they were mostly competitive games.
  21. I think the biggest name starting pitcher likely to be traded this off-season is Madison Bumgarner. The starting pitcher that I don’t think will be available this off-season, but has a decent chance to be available leading up to next season’s July trade deadline is James Paxton. I don’t know if the Brewers would realistically make an attempt to acquire either of those pitchers.
  22. I guess we can add another accomplishment to the board... Yet another celebration...
