  1. Just three weeks later and Baseball Prospectus now has the Brewers projected for 88 wins with 60.7% odds to make the playoffs which is the third highest among all NL teams behind only the Cubs (69.2%) and Nationals (64.5%).
  2. This year’s draft strikes me as still being fluid at the top and very strong in the #15-50 range. I do wish the Brewers had a higher second pick. As it is the #60 and #73 selections will still be plenty important. I don’t think he is likely to fall to one of those picks for the Brewers, but I am a believer in RHP Blaine Knight from the University of Arkansas.
  3. 31-19 Best start through the first 50 games of a season in franchise history. Also held the Diamondbacks to 22 hits over the six game series which according to the Fox Sports Wisconsin broadcast is a new major league record for lowest number of hits allowed over a six game season series. Wow, things are really rolling along right now... oh, and now at a .620 winning percentage which puts them on pace for a 100 win season.
  4. Brewers are up to 6 runners left on base through 3 innings.
  5. Completely agree with this. He changed the zone in the last two innings of a one run game. Regarding his complaint about being passed over for postseason/World Series assignments, I can’t even imagine how infuriating it would be to watch tonight’s sequence of calls happen in the last two innings of an important playoff game.
  6. Brewers are the first National League team to 30 wins, and are now on pace for 99 wins.
  7. Well 10-1 loss for the Cubs, but the most steady member of their rotation thus far, Tyler Chatwood, walked 6 and gave up 4 hits in 2.2 innings pitched.
  8. Seems pretty clear Angel Hernandez is trying to make things extra dramatic tonight.
  9. Random observation here, Eric Thames suffered his thumb injury 4 weeks ago today. I believe he had the surgery later in that week, so I assume he isn’t quite to the 4 week mark in terms of recovery time just yet, but it is nice to know he is likely past the half way point toward his return.
  10. Maybe this doesn’t matter either, but it seems a little strange having Cain hit behind a much slower player that is likely to get on-base. I would have been more on board with placing Ji-Man Choi in the #3 spot.
  11. Regarding Arcia, just a friendly reminder that things were looking fairly bleak for him through the first 50 games last season (albeit not quite as poorly as this year has been), and then in the month of June he proceeded to slash .326 BA/.370 OBP/.478 SLG. Not saying history will repeat itself, but I think it is worth remaining patient with him. I've resigned myself to the likelihood he will never be an upper half of the order hitter, but I think he will be able to at least get back closer to respectability.

  13. Thanks for doing this, it is interesting to see where things stand at this point in the season. Regarding Yelich, assuming he doesn’t have another DL stint this season I think these projections would be slightly higher, correct? He has played in 36 of the 48 games so far this season. If we assume he plays in the majority of the remaining games (lets say 110 of the 114 left) I believe his projected numbers would be 3.2 fWAR, 4.1 bWAR, 3.7 avg.
  14. I agree with you as I also favor moves that increase the likelihood that the Brewers field a good team for several years, but I would add that even with maximizing the number of playoff appearances there are obviously still no guarantees. I think the Washington Nationals of the past 6-7 seasons illustrate just how difficult it can be for a well assembled team to win a championship even given a longer window to be competitive. The Nationals have won 95 or more games in four of the past six seasons, but yet they have never even reached the NLCS. Imagine how frustrating it would be to have that amount of talent for a stretch of several years and continually fail to advance beyond of the Divisional Series. I am not saying the Nationals necessarily did anything wrong (well maybe aside from shutting down Strasburg in 2012), but I would guess that, barring a World Series appearance this season, many of their fans will consider the 2010's to have been somewhat of a disappointment.
  15. To me this seems close to what it should cost. I could see them requesting someone like Erceg in place of Ray, which may be a dealbreaker for me. It would be a painful hit to the system (as to be expected), but I think I would make the deal you outlined above for Realmuto.
  16. The part I don’t understand is putting him into these tied games late almost feels like waiving the white flag. I get that you can’t use the same relievers every day, but the odds seem really high Logan is going to get hit around in these situations.
  17. I’m starting to think Boone Logan might not be very good.
  18. Williams’ lead off walk in the 8th inning with Boone Logan coming on in a 1-1 game seems like déjà vu.
  19. The defense can’t ask. Only the home plate umpire can. Catchers often point to the base umpire when they think a batter went around, but the base umpire will only respond if the home plate ump asks. I know that is how it is supposed to work, but it seems rare an umpire ever refuses to oblige when the catcher reacts to what they believe is an offered swing. Don’t think I’ve ever seen a home plate umpire willing to check his call after he has just called a batter out on the swing.
  20. Darn, second inning in a row with a runner in scoring position and a strikeout to end the inning.
  21. If the defense can ask for the base umpire’s help on a check swing call why can’t the hitter? Either way, it did look like Villar offered there.
  22. The lineup looks perfectly suited for the DH which should come in handy during the World Series road games this year.
