  1. Final: Brevard County 7, Daytona 6 Rubio walk-off snaps Manatees losing streak By Donald Rieber, Jr., Manatees Examiner http://cdn2-b.examiner.com/sites/default/files/styles/image_content_width/hash/c4/20/c42023429bcaf523e1b39c4d9fffcfa2.jpg?itok=K4DqcyrF Elvis Rubio's walk-off home run was the difference Wednesday, in the Manatees 7-6 victory. (Brevard County Manatees - Tim Holle) PHOTO GALLERY LINK (7 photos available including some impressive action shots) *** Brevard County Box Score Lots of positive production at the plate. Review the linked game story and box score for full details. 2013 7th round draft selection Omar Garcia (2-for-5, triple) was playing in his first game since being pulled from last Friday's game which was noted at the time as a "managerial decision". Garcia's triple was only his second extra base hit this season (the other a double) in 138 at-bats (31 hits). The speedy Garcia could use a further boost to his .246 slugging percentage. Brevard County has the second lowest total team home runs (26) in the Florida State League, but tonight they had three players hit round trippers: Dustin DeMuth (2-for-5, HR, but also 3 strikeouts), Gregory McCall (2-for-4, HR), Elvis Rubio (3-for-5, HR). Zero walks recorded in the game for either Brevard County or Daytona although Clint Coulter was hit by a pitch. Pitchers Cody Ponce and Angel Ventura combined to go all nine innings on the mound. Each gave up two earned runs apiece in outings that were solid, but not spectacular. Each pitcher gave up a home run to Daytona CF Ty Washington. Despite the box score saying Ponce only threw 24 pitches, Donald covers in the game story that it was actually 46 pitches thrown for Ponce. Brevard County Game Log Down 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and one on base and Elvis Rubio steps to the plate and delivers a walk-off home run. For Rubio it was his 5th home run of 2016, and 4th since joining Brevard County. Brevard County Bottom of the 9th Omar Garcia singles on a line drive to left fielder Aristides Aquino. Blake Allemand out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Brennan Bernardino to second baseman Blake Trahan. Omar Garcia to 2nd. Dustin DeMuth strikes out swinging. Pitching Change: Ariel Hernandez replaces Brennan Bernardino. Elvis Rubio homers (4) on a line drive to left field. Omar Garcia scores.
  2. Very brief video of Jean Carlos Carmona batting (note the apparel)...
  3. The Fangraphs July 2 Sortable Board projects two players to sign with the Brewers, SS/2B Jean Carlos Carmona and OF Pablo Abreu (same players that have been linked to the Brewers previously). For those that want to bypass the article and go straight to the board, here is the LINK. The first thing that stuck out about Jean Carlos Carmona is that his name is a combination of two Dominican players that were implicated in having falsified their ages. Jean Carlos (Batista) chronicled in the movie Pelotero alongside Miguel Sano, and Fausto Carmona (Roberto Hernandez) who pitched six years with the Indians under a false identity and age.
  4. Brevard County with 13 hits, 7 runs, and a walk-off home run to WIN! The losing streak is finally over and with it being a home game we can expect some upbeat quotes from Manager Joe Ayrault in tonight's linked game story.
  5. Former Brewers farmhand Anthony Banda also named to the Futures Game US Roster. Below are the complete team rosters for the US and World teams. The game is scheduled to be played Sunday, July 10th at 6 p.m. CT at Petco Park in San Diego. As was the case when Zack Greinke was traded to the Angels, some of these players may end up in the Brewers organization by the end of July. U.S. Roster World Roster
  6. Final: Tampa 5, Brevard County 2 Walk-off slam by Conde leads Tampa to series sweep By Donald Rieber, Jr., Manatees Examiner *** Brevard County Box Score Starter Jon Perrin lasted 5.0 innings allowing eight hits (all singles), but only one earned run and one walk while striking out four. Kender Villegas had a nice relief outing allowing just one hit and striking out three over 3.0 innings pitched. The Manatees batters managed just four hits and struck out nine times. On the season the Manatees are one of three Florida State League teams to have more strikeouts (633) than hits (560). The Manatees trail the FSL in both Slugging % (.299) and OPS (.606). Dustin DeMuth reached base in all four plate appearances. DeMuth went 2-for-2 including a double, and also reached base via a hit by pitch and a walk. Since joining the Manatees last week Blake Allemand has gone just 2-for-22 at the plate with seven strikeouts. Brevard County Game Log I think it is safe to say (at least for this week) that the Yankees Vicente Conde is the biggest Sea Cow killer of them all. He was the star of Monday's doubleheader, but saved his best for last. In the bottom of the 9th with the Manatees leading 2-1 Conde finished off Jon Olczak's tough outing with one grand swing. Tampa Bottom of the 9th Pitching Change: Jon Olczak replaces Kender Villegas. Abiatal Avelino singles on a soft ground ball to shortstop Jose Cuas. Zack Zehner singles on a fly ball to right fielder Clint Coulter. Zack Zehner to 2nd. Abiatal Avelino advances to 3rd, on a throwing error by right fielder Clint Coulter. Jon Olczak intentionally walks Jake Skole. Vicente Conde hits a grand slam (1) to left field. Abiatal Avelino scores. Zack Zehner scores. Jake Skole scores. Olczak coincidently has given up runs in just two of his past ten outings and both of those outings were against Tampa. Unfortunately in those two outings Olczak has recorded only three total outs while giving up a combined seven hits, nine earned runs, and three walks. Quite the ERA buster!
  7. Final, Game One: Tampa 2, Brevard County 0 Final, Game Two: Tampa 2, Brevard County 0 Tampa starters steamroll Manatees in doubleheader sweep Donald Rieber, Jr., Manatees Examiner *** Brevard County Game One Box Score All three Manatees hits were infield singles, and just one Brevard County baserunner reached second base. Win-loss record is mostly meaningless in minor league baseball, but Eric Hanhold was tagged for his 14th loss as a member of the Brewers organization versus just two wins. Hanhold lasted all 6.0 innings giving up six hits, two earned runs, and one walk while striking out one. Brevard County Game One Game Log Malik Collymore began the 4th inning with a bunt single, but quickly fell victim to a pick-off to first base. Brevard County Top of the 4th Malik Collymore singles on a bunt ground ball to second baseman Thairo Estrada. With Blake Allemand batting, Josh Rogers picks off Malik Collymore at 1st on throw to Bo Thompson. Blake Allemand flies out to right fielder Austin Aune. Dustin DeMuth singles on a ground ball to pitcher Josh Rogers. Elvis Rubio grounds out, second baseman Thairo Estrada to first baseman Bo Thompson Brevard County Game Two Box Score The Manatees collected five hits in game two, including a pair for George Iskenderian (2-for-3). No extra base hits for the Manatees in either game. Kodi Medeiros pitched 4.0 innings versus a tough Tampa lineup. Medeiros gave up five hits, one run, one walk and struck out three. Clint Terry pitched two innings in relief. The 2013 draft pick from Lee University has averaged almost a strikeout per inning throughout his professional career, but this year he has totaled just 19 strikeouts in 38 innings (4.5 K/9). Brevard County Game Two Game Log In what has been an all to common occurrence the Manatees suffer a pair of shut outs bringing the season total to 13 games in which they have not scored a run.
  8. College stats don't directly correlate with pro stats. If they did, Rickie Weeks would have been a multiple MVP winner, which people still thought he would be when he was in the minors. Yes, some high OPS hitters don't pan out, but that's not the discussion here. I'm looking for an OF who didn't have a high OPS who did become an impact player. Can you name one? Please, help me out! I didn't search too hard, but looking at some past All-Stars here are a few that match your criteria. All links are for Baseball Cube which includes college stats. I put Corey Ray at the top for those not familiar with his college stats. Corey Ray NCAA career (3 years at Louisville) OPS of .928 Michael Bourn NCAA career (3 years at Houston) OPS of .802 Brett Gardner NCAA career (4 years at College of Charleston) OPS of .930 Curtis Granderson had a ridiculous Junior year, but his first two years at Illinois-Chicago he had OPS' of .822 and .932. Ian Kinsler is not an OF, but an NCAA career (1 year at Central Arizona, 1 year at Arizona State, 1 year at Missouri) OPS of .923
  9. That's a bold move, its been a while since the Brewers took a college bat so highly in the draft, I'm not used to seeing a kid jump right to A+. Braun didn't go to A+ until his 2nd pro season, and that was after having an OPS 250 points higher in college. This is as poor of placement as putting Medeiros at A+ this season. After Rays pedestrian collegiate production, it would be doubtful he'd hit well in A ball, much less A+. I wasn't a big proponent of the Corey Ray selection (although I think he's likely a future major leaguer), but you've made the point about college OPS several times throughout this thread. I would be interested to see how closely college OPS either does or doesn't align with professional success. I am not convinced it as closely associated as we may think, but I could certainly be wrong. A recent example of a player with a low college OPS (much lower than Corey Ray) is 2015 first round draft pick Kevin Newman who had a .817 OPS in 3 years at Arizona and went on to hit for a .929 OPS in 41 Florida State League games this year before being called up to AA. Small sample size, but at least an interesting parallel. Similarly to Ray, Newman was a guy Keith Law had near the top of his draft board.
  10. Brevard County's game at Tampa was postponed due to weather. The game will be made as part of a doubleheader between the Manatees and Yankees on Monday beginning at 4:00pm CT.
  11. Final: Clearwater 9, Brevard County 2 Green leads Clearwater's 18-hit barrage against Manatees By Donald Rieber, Jr., Manatees Examiner http://cdn2-b.examiner.com/sites/default/files/styles/image_content_width/hash/76/0c/760cf52bdd10d80794de2a9343be40a3.JPG?itok=GMQJX9zh Cody Ponce pitched three innings Friday night, in a 9-2 loss to Clearwater. (Brevard County Manatees - Tim Holle) *** Brevard County Box Score During 3.0 innings pitched Cody Ponce allowed 8 hits, 5 runs, 1 walk, and recorded 3 strike outs. Most of the damage against Ponce was done in the first inning (5 hits and 4 earned runs) The Manatees multi-hit games came from Elvis Rubio (2-for-5, double) and Clint Coulter (2-for-5). Brevard County Game Log According to the game story removing CF Omar Garcia from the game following his first at-bat and replace him with Brandon Diaz was a "managerial decision". Brevard County Bottom of the 1st Omar Garcia doubles (1) on a line drive to left fielder Cord Sandberg. Blake Allemand pops out to second baseman Scott Kingery in foul territory. Dustin DeMuth grounds out sharply to first baseman Zach Green. Omar Garcia to 3rd. Elvis Rubio doubles (5) on a line drive to left fielder Cord Sandberg. Omar Garcia scores. Clint Coulter singles on a line drive to center fielder Carlos Tocci. Elvis Rubio scores. George Iskenderian singles on a line drive to right fielder Jiandido Tromp. Clint Coulter to 2nd. With Fidel Pena batting, wild pitch by Elniery Garcia, Clint Coulter to 3rd. George Iskenderian to 2nd. Fidel Pena grounds out, third baseman Mitch Walding to first baseman Zach Green. Clearwater Top of the 2nd Defensive Substitution: Brandon Diaz replaces center fielder Omar Garcia, batting 1st, playing center field. Cord Sandberg grounds out sharply, pitcher Cody Ponce to first baseman Dustin DeMuth. Carlos Tocci lines out softly to center fielder Brandon Diaz. Scott Kingery walks. With Mitch Walding batting, Scott Kingery steals (17) 2nd base. Mitch Walding strikes out swinging.
  12. Final: Clearwater 7, Brevard County 4 Threshers take second half opener from Manatees By Donald Rieber, Jr., Manatees Examiner http://cdn2-b.examiner.com/sites/default/files/styles/image_content_width/hash/b9/74/b9747fb91955fd406eb046e2b2ca2765.JPG?itok=avcaw89v Jon Perrin pitched 4.2 innings on Thursday, in the loss to Clearwater. (Brevard County Manatees - Tim Holle) LINK: PHOTO GALLERY (5 PHOTOS) *** Brevard County Box Score Jon Perrin allowed 11 hits, 5 runs, 1 walk while recording 4 strike outs over 4.2 innings pitched. Seven total hits for the Manatess, the only multi-hit game came from Elvis Rubio (2-for-4). Extra base hits from Clint Coulter (double) and Fidel Pena (448ft home run as mentioned in the game story). Blake Allemand in his first game back up with the Manatees since early this season went 1-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored, and 3 strikeouts. Brevard County Game Log Tough luck for CF Omar Garcia who was charged with an error that according to the game story was actually a ball that Clint Coulter lost in the twilight sky and Garcia attempted to get over to help Coulter. Two unearned runs scored following the two-out error. Clearwater Top of the 7th Kyle Martin grounds out, first baseman Dustin DeMuth to pitcher Kender Villegas. Chace Numata grounds out to first baseman Dustin DeMuth. Malquin Canelo singles on a sharp ground ball to third baseman Blake Allemand. Jiandido Tromp reaches on a fielding error by center fielder Omar Garcia. Malquin Canelo scores. Jiandido Tromp to 2nd. Herlis Rodriguez singles on a line drive to center fielder Omar Garcia. Jiandido Tromp scores. Carlos Tocci pops out to second baseman George Iskenderian in foul territory.
  13. Final: Dunedin 5, Brevard County 1 Manatees swept by Dunedin to end first half By Donald Rieber, Jr., Manatees Examiner *** Brevard County Box Score The Manatees combined for just 11 hits and 3 runs over the three day series with Dunedin. Of tonights 4 hits only Jose Cuas' home run was an extra base hit. It was Cuas' third home run of the season. The Manatees were 0-for-1 with runners in scoring position.... Yes, just a lone at-bat with a runner in scoring position. Kodi Medeiros went 4.0 IP allowing 6 hits, 5 runs, 4 walks, with 2 strikeouts. Medeiros threw just 42 of 82 pitches for strikes. Brevard County Game Log
  14. : Footage taken by 2080 Baseball's Mauricio Rubio from a previous game gives a nice 2-minute visual of Isan Diaz and some of the things outlined in the Baseball Prospectus screenshot linked above (including the noted head shake).
  15. I was able to attend a Timber Rattlers game this past weekend, and came away very impressed with Isan Diaz. He just seemed to have a great feel for the game, and for lack of a better way to identify it he just "looked the part". I know it is easy to gush about a guy when he hits two doubles ( of first 2B and of second 2B), but aside from just that I was very impressed with his abilities on the field and the way he carried himself. I'm not a scout obviously, but his bat speed appeared very quick. His swing seemed smooth and he really squared some of the balls. Even his ground outs to first base weren't weak contact. There weren't a lot of challenging plays in the field at SS during the game I attended, but he seems constantly engaged, constantly interacting with guys both in the field and in the dugout. It is hard to pinpoint what "it" is, but he looks to me to be a guy that has great maturity on the field for a player his age. I don't want to make too far of a leap here after seeing just one game in-person, but it is fair to say I am very excited to watch him progress in the Brewers organization.
  16. Final: Dunedin 6, Brevard County 0 Dunedin hurlers overpower Manatees in 6-0 win By Donald Rieber, Jr., Manatees Examiner *** Brevard County Box Score Returning to the mound for the first time since June 10th it was a forgettable 4.0 inning start for Eric Hanhold as he gave up 11 hits and 5 runs. Zach Hirsch and Kaleb Earls did combine to allow just 2 hits and 1 run over the final 4.0 innings while also recording 6 strikeouts. The day after a 4 hit effort the BC bats mustered just 3 hits. The only extra base hit was a double from catcher Dustin Houle. Brevard County Game Log Manatees look to turn things around tomorrow morning with Kodi Medeiros on the hill.
  17. The @BrewersPD Twitter account adamant that 7th round draft selection Daniel Brown has not signed yet, here is the LINK.
  18. Final: Dunedin 3, Brevard County 2 Dunedin returns from All-Star break with walk-off win over Manatees By Donald Rieber, Jr., Manatees Examiner *** Brevard County Box Score George Iskenderian (1-for-4) extended his hitting streak to nine games and has raised his batting average 19 percentage points over that period (now up to .265 on the season). The Manatees only had four hits in the game, two of those were off the bat of Elvis Rubio (2-for-4). Starter Bubba Derby went 6.0 innings giving up 7 hits, 2 runs and just 1 walk, but somewhat surprisingly recorded 0 strikeouts. Brevard County Game Log Manatees fall victim to a 9th inning walk-off. Dunedin Bottom of the 9th Jorge Saez grounds out, shortstop Angel Ortega to first baseman Dustin DeMuth. D. J. Davis doubles (8) on a ground ball to center fielder Omar Garcia. Gunnar Heidt walks. Wild pitch by pitcher Junior Rincon. D. Davis to 3rd. Gunnar Heidt to 2nd. Dickie Joe Thon walks. Pitching Change: Josh Uhen replaces Junior Rincon. Jonathan Davis singles on a ground ball to right fielder Clint Coulter. Davis scores. Gunnar Heidt to 3rd. Dickie Joe Thon to 2nd.

  23. Final: Daytona 11, Brevard County 6 Tortugas trounce Manatees first half finale By Donald Rieber, Jr., Manatees Examiner *** Brevard County Box Score Cody Ponce's 44-pitch 3.0 inning outing is recapped in the game story. Dustin DeMuth hit a triple and scored on the same play with the help of a throwing error. It was DeMuth's 19th extra base hit of the season which leads the Manatees, no other player has reached double-digits extra base hits yet. The only multi-hit performance for Brevard County was Malik Collymore who finished 2-for-4 with a double. Brevard County Game Log
  24. Final: Palm Beach 7, Brevard County 4 Back-to-back homers not enough in 'Tees loss to Palm Beach By Donald Rieber, Jr., Manatees Examiner http://cdn2-b.examiner.com/sites/default/files/styles/image_content_width/hash/1d/fd/1dfd9608adafa1452342be15e36393c9.jpg?itok=iRw7aTLx Clint Coulter went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. (Brevard County Manatees - Tim Holle) Article includes LINK to PHOTO GALLERY (5 Photos) Also included in the text of the game story is an excellent PHOTO of spot starter Clint Terry. *** Brevard County Box Score Despite the loss, the game story and photos are worth checking out. Per usual, the game story does the heavy lifting so I am going to keep things short here. George Iskenderian extended his hit streak to eight games and he is batting .314 in the month of June. Nice offensive night for Clint Coulter with a pair of hits including a double as well as a walk. Coulter could use a string of positive production as his OPS for the season currently sits at .607. The back-to-back homers from Jose Cuas and Gregory McCall were the Manatees 20th and 21st HR's of the year which is higher than only Palm Beach in the FSL. Brevard County Game Log As mentioned previously, Brevard County manager Joe Ayrault did not last long in this one. Palm Beach Top of the 1st Oscar Mercado walks. With Cole Lankford batting, Oscar Mercado advances to 2nd on a balk. Brevard County Manatees Manager Joe Ayrault ejected by 1B umpire Dave Attridge. George Iskenderian singles on a line drive to center fielder Blake Drake. Clint Coulter to 3rd. Jose Cuas homers (2) on a line drive to left field. Clint Coulter scores. George Iskenderian scores. Greg McCall homers (2) on a line drive to right field. Pitching Change: Kyle Grana replaces Ian McKinney. Brandon Diaz strikes out swinging. Malik Collymore walks. With Angel Ortega batting, Malik Collymore steals (2) 2nd base. Angel Ortega lines out to left fielder Jhohan Acevedo.
  25. ARTICLE: Fangraphs KATOH projection system thinks pretty highly of Braden Webb projecting him to have the second highest through age-27 WAR of any college player taken in the draft. ARTICLE: This Fangraphs piece published the day prior to the one linked above focuses on Day One draft picks and their KATOH projections. Below is Corey Ray's projection, but please note the system projects most draft picks to have very low WAR through age-27. The system did give Corey Ray the second highest percentage chance among college draft picks to make it to the majors at 75%.
