  1. ARTICLE LINK: Two-way George County High School (Mississippi) prospect Walker Robbins says the Brewers and Padres have shown the most interest in him. Robbins is both a LHP and a well regarded hitter.
  2. I see no possible way Rutherford slips 42 picks.....I have hard time seeing him out of top 10. He's not a signability issue. Unless he tells every team that he will absolutely not sign with them....he's already 19 & hasnt switched to a JUCO.... No way he's going to college If the Phillies were to guarantee him nearly $5 million then there is certainly a chance he becomes this year's Daz Cameron by making it cost prohibitive for other teams to be able to match the Phillies money (with a few exceptions). The Phillies first two selections combine for over $10.5 million in slot value.
  3. Have heard some speculation that the Phillies are in on both Moniak and Rutherford, with idea of paying them both in the $4.5-$5.5 million range. In the scenario Moniak would likely be their first pick and Rutherford would go at #42. If they pull it off it would be an impressive haul. Have to think the Brewers are one of the few teams that could throw a wrench in the plan.
  4. I would still like to see the Brewers draft Groome if he is available, but the fact that he has switched his college commitment to a JC and has backed out on plans to attend the draft in-person seem like ominous signs regarding where his advisors expect him to be selected at this point. If they pass on Groome I really hope Riley Pint is the selection at #5.
  5. Jeff Passan with some conflicting info to John Manuel claiming team have known about drug tests since last Thursday. Makes sense since rumors about Perez dropping started popping up on Friday (Jeff Ellis alluded to it on Scout podcast recorded Friday night). Passan's Tweets...
  6. The most recent CBA requires the top 200 draft prospects to be drug tested. Not sure when the tests take place or how they are administered. According to John Manuel it is the Major League Scouting Bureau that arranges the tests. Here is a series of tweets regarding it...
  7. I think Matt Manning ends up going to San Diego at one of their two picks in the mid-20's for a significantly overslot deal. I'll go with Braxton Garrett for the Tigers here.
  8. Thanks for sharing, obviously a significant leverage move on the part of Groome's camp. I have to think if he made that move than there is likely no current deal worked out with a team (or at least wasn't when he made the switch). The $4 million demand doesn't necessarily mean he has to be selected in the top six. Remember, the Phillies, Braves, Reds, and Padres are all working with pools in the $13 million range. The Padres could take Groome at #8 ($3.6 million slot) and easily find the extra money with an under slot signing at one of their next selections. Also the Phillies, Reds, and Braves are all likely to sign their first selections for below slot value, and as the article points out the Braves are considering Ian Anderson who they would be able to sign for around $3.5 million under slot (he would sign for $3 million of a $6.5 million slot). It would only take one other under slot signing among their many picks to get to the $4 million number for Groome if they select him later down the draft board.
  9. ARTICLE LINK: Adam McCalvy's MLB.com article points out that David Stearns saw Riley Pint pitch in person this Spring and Ray Montgomery witnessed Jason Groome's worst start of the Spring first-hand on May 7th.
  10. ARTICLE LINK: Elon University third baseman Nick Zammarelli can be added to the list of prospects confirmed to have participated in Milwaukee's pre-draft workout. For those interested in Zammarelli's college stats, including last summer on the Cape, here the LINK to his Baseball Cube page.
  11. Great find amt2138! ARTICLE LINK: It is highly unlikely Gavin Lux is a Brewers draft pick unless they shock everybody and take him with their first selection, but as Tom Haudricourt mentions in the article both David Stearns and Doug Melvin have scouted Lux in-person this Spring.
  12. Thanks for clarification! Hopefully the MiLB makes that update to the box score today.
  13. The Padres have picks #8, #24, #25, #48, #71, #85. I have a feeling they are going to get a high upside under-slot player with their first selection and use the savings to make multiple over-slot signings (i.e. Matt Manning, Cal Quantrill) with their next picks. I could see Will Benson being their first pick in this scenario, but I will go with... 1.8: Padres - Alex Kirilloff, OF, Plum HS (PA)
  14. I listened to another radio appearance from John Manuel recorded yesterday (with an Atlanta radio station) and he mentioned he expects Groome to go in the top ten with picks #3, #4, #6, and #8 being the most likely. So much for the idea of sliding outside the top ten picks he mentioned previously. I do think the Padres at #8 are Groome's floor, they have a lot of financial resources in this draft and appear to be heavily weighting upside. Unless they have some other under-slot deal worked out already it seems like they would jump at Groome.
  15. Final: St. Lucie 7, Brevard County 0 Manatees manage three hits in 7-0 loss to St. Lucie By Donald Rieber, Jr., Manatees Examiner http://cdn2-b.examiner.com/sites/default/files/styles/image_content_width/hash/73/6c/736c105cad496291572c61302ea8737b.JPG?itok=6Mqw0OuK MLB rehabber Travis d'Arnaud knocked in the first St. Lucie Mets run of the day Sunday. They would beat the Manatees, 7-0. (Brevard County Manatees - Tim Holle) *** Brevard County Box Score Despite the headline the box score only credits the Manatees with two hits, a single by George Iskenderian and a double from Gregory McCall. Angel Ortega's "hit" was apparently changed to an error. In addition to only two hits the Manatees managed just one walk and had only left two runners on base all day. Brevard County Game Log This game wasn't pretty, but I highly recommend clicking the game story. The final paragraph includes a preview and quotes from Brevard County Manager Joe Ayrault about Cody Ponce's scheduled season debut tomorrow evening (weather permitting). If they can dodge the tropical storm we should be in for a real treat... Happy Cody Ponce Eve everybody!
  16. Well I guess we will know more about how prevelant the concerns are once we see where Groome is actually selected. The talent is undeniable so if he falls outside of the top 5-10 picks than there is probably some legitimacy to the concerns beyond teams trying to gain negotiating leverage. I am quite skeptical that Groome will fall as far as John Manuel suggests is possible, but he went further down the road of explaining specific issues than most have thus far. It is starting to feel like Groome's ceiling and floor are moving towards the extremes (boom or bust). I still lean towards viewing him as a future ace.
  17. Another very interesting podcast LINK (The Felske Files, episode 51). The guest is Baseball America's John Manuel and at the 26:30 mark he discusses why teams are moving on from Jason Groome, and at 32:00 he discusses Blake Rutherford in-depth. At the 34:00 minute mark he mentions that Rutherford, Moniak, and Pint are the only high school players he hears in the top 10 picks currently, and mentions that Groome could fall to #14 "if the Indians deem him signable".
  18. No, Scout's Ellis and Ward have been saying the Brewers were all over Rutherford for quite some time. The 2080 Baseball guys along with Perfect Game's Bryan Sakowski were the Delvin Perez to the Brewers crowd.
  19. LINK: Audio version of Jeff Ellis and Taylor Blake Ward explaining on their podcast why they believe Blake Rutherford is going to Brewers (podcast link also available via this TWEET). The Rutherford to the Brewers discussion begins at the 1 hour and 1 minute mark (1:01:00). Also worth noting that Ellis believes Rutherford is the best player available in this year's draft which is an opinion that does not appear to be shared by many others currently. For those interested in listening to the entire podcast, earlier in the show they mention having information that Delvin Perez's stock is currently dropping.
  20. Follow-up from a previous post here is a LINK to Steve Luhm's article on draft prospect Payton Henry including acknowledgement of his recent workout in Milwaukee.
  21. This series of tweets from Salt Lake Tribune sports writer Steve Luhm provides information about another player that attended the pre-draft workout in Milwaukee, Utah HS catcher Payton Henry.
  22. Final: Brevard County 9, St. Lucie 4 Manatees six-run surge sinks St. Lucie By Donald Rieber, Jr., Manatees Examiner *** Brevard County Box Score Bubba Derby recovered from a rough first inning to go 6.0 innings and earn the win. Two hits including a double for Dustin DeMuth. DeMuth has hit safely in the last 7 games. He is batting .441 over that stretch (15-for-34). Clint Coulter had a double and a home run. The Manatees combined for 12 hits (including 4 for extra bases) and 6 walks. Lots of positive offensive performances to review in the game story and box score. Enjoy! Brevard County Game Log The Manatees first two batters were retired in the 4th inning and then they proceeded to tally 6 runs as 8 straight batters reached base (7 hits and 1 walk). Dustin Houle was the only Manatee without a hit in the game and he did have the dubious distinction of recording two outs in the same inning. Brevard County Top of the 4th Clint Coulter flies out to right fielder John Mora. Dustin Houle called out on strikes. Taylor Brennan singles on a ground ball to left fielder Patrick Biondi. Malik Collymore singles on a ground ball to center fielder Champ Stuart. Taylor Brennan to 2nd. Johnny Davis singles on a line drive to left fielder Patrick Biondi. Taylor Brennan to 3rd. Malik Collymore to 2nd. Angel Ortega singles on a ground ball to left fielder Patrick Biondi. Taylor Brennan scores. Malik Collymore to 3rd. Johnny Davis to 2nd. Dustin DeMuth doubles (12) on a line drive to left fielder Patrick Biondi. Malik Collymore scores. Johnny Davis scores. Angel Ortega to 3rd. Elvis Rubio singles on a line drive to right fielder John Mora. Angel Ortega scores. Dustin DeMuth scores. Elvis Rubio to 2nd on the throw. Fidel Pena walks. Clint Coulter hits a ground-rule double (3) on a fly ball to left-center field. Elvis Rubio scores. Fidel Pena to 3rd. Dustin Houle flies out to left fielder Patrick Biondi.
  23. Final: Brevard County 6, St. Lucie 4 Manatees topple Mets on Houle's two-run double By Donald Rieber, Jr., Manatees Examiner *** Brevard County Box Score Three hits again for a second straight night from Dustin DeMuth. His final line tonight was 3-for-4 including a triple and walk. Two hit efforts from Angel Ortega (2-for-4) and Malik Collymore (2-for-4, triple, walk). Clint Coulter went 1-for-4 with a double. Brevard County Game Log Manatees with the winning runs plated in the 9th inning. Brevard County Top of the 9th Pitching Change: Corey Taylor replaces Mike Hepple. Malik Collymore singles on a ground ball to left fielder John Mora. Johnny Davis out on a sacrifice bunt, first baseman Michael Katz to second baseman Jonathan Johnson. Malik Collymore to 2nd. With Angel Ortega batting, wild pitch by Corey Taylor, Malik Collymore to 3rd. Angel Ortega walks. With Dustin DeMuth batting, Angel Ortega steals (8) 2nd base. Corey Taylor intentionally walks Dustin DeMuth. Elvis Rubio strikes out swinging. Dustin Houle hits a ground-rule double (5) on a fly ball to right-center field. Malik Collymore scores. Angel Ortega scores. Dustin DeMuth to 3rd. George Iskenderian flies out to center fielder Champ Stuart.
  24. Since Perez is still on the board in this scenario, I would not expect Miami to pass on him.... My vote is Delvin Perez to the Marlins at #7.
