  1. If he's correct it won't be too cost prohibitive to acquire a bat or 2 to lengthen the bench/pair up with Rowdy at 1st. My goodness do I want to acquire Gallo. Positional flexibility, great defense, and not a rental. Add in his lack of LH/RH split differences and power, and he’s the bat I want. Him and Rowdy at 1st, with Gallo rotating into the OF when Rowdy plays first. Gallo is the one likely available player that I’ll do literal fist pumps if they acquire. It seems most Gallo specific rumors keep mentioning the Padres (and how AJ Preller really likes him), but I’m hoping the Brewers are indeed in on him as well.

  3. This might not be exact spirit of the question, but some of the most likely to get moved are prospects that currently have Rule 5 eligibility: Payton Henry Antonio Pinero Thomas Jankins Zack Brown Gabriel Garcia Lucas Erceg Braden Webb Pablo Abreu In addition to those Rule 5 eligible players, I believe these players will also be Rule 5 eligible if not added to the 40-man roster this offseason (feel free to correct me if any of these are incorrect): Reese Olson Tristen Lutz Korry Howell Noah Zavolas Carlos Rodriguez Je’Von Ward Max Lazar Victor Castaneda Caden Lemons (Injured)
  4. Sounds like the Dean Taylor school of GMing by talking about looking at all the moves "in totality" after getting totally fleeced in the Burnitz trade. Here’s a full quote from Dipoto… “It probably doesn’t as a stand-alone, but it’s part of a context that I believe is going to be an ongoing story over the next couple of days,” he said. “So as we move toward the trade deadline (July 30). We have been pretty open in sharing the idea that we’re trying to both address present and future, and we remain actively engaged in the market and trying to address upgrades now, that will give us a chance to be as competitive as we can over the next 60 games and hopefully into the postseason.” Dipoto admitted that the trade could disrupt the chemistry in the clubhouse and also affect the psyche of the team in the immediate aftermath. “It’s definitely a concern, hopefully the next moves will make a little bit more sense of it for the guys,” he said. “I think they’ll find that we are very committed to adding to the team.” Reading that Seattle Times article, the players (including Graveman) really let loose with their thoughts. I feel like there’s a good chance Dipoto is going to go overboard making a win now move to balance things out. It might be a good time for other sellers to get Dipoto on the phone.
  5. Some Mariners players aren’t exactly happy…
  6. Looks like the Tyler Anderson trade fell through and he’s in the Pirates bullpen right now according to Robert Murray.
  7. From Robert Murray… Sources: Phillies close to acquiring Tyler Anderson from Pirates.

  9. In a vacuum it’s sort of incredible that the Padres are going to give up a better prospect to move Hosmer than they gave up to acquire Yu Darvish… And yes, I understand why.
  10. Tyler Anderson has been very good against the current Brewers bats. The Brewers hitters are 6-for-35 with just one extra base hit (a double), two walks, and 10 strikeouts against Anderson. The good news for the Brewers is that Anderson is expected to be traded this week and there is at least a chance it could happen before the first pitch tonight. Adding the lineups to this post…

  12. The Reds signed the 17th overall pick Matt McLain for $4.625 million. That’s one million dollars over slot, and $625k more than what Sal Frelick signed for. I was disappointed the Brewers didn’t get McLain on draft night, but these financials are a good reminder why it’s so tough to really draw many conclusions on draft night. Without being privy to the negotiations going on in the background it’s impossible to understand all of the motivating factors at play for teams.
  13. And sometimes Michael Brantley and Nelson Cruz are throw-ins. You could also argue that Mitch Haniger was essentially a bit of a throwaway in 2014 as well since Gerardo Parra was riding just an 85 OPS+ at the time of the deal and wasn’t likely to provide an impact bat. Regardless, the point isn’t teams should never make trades just because some will turn out bad in the long run. It highlights the importance of understanding the talent and future projection for the players in your own system and balancing that against assessing the risk/reward of dealing them. You’ll win some and lose some (as every team does), but sometimes hanging onto a player instead of making a big splash proves to be the best thing for the organization’s future. I’ll be as excited as anyone to see the Brewers make big moves, but I also understand they aren’t going to completely mortgage the future health of the organization to do so. If they do trade from their very top tier of prospects I expect them to be for players with control beyond just the next two months.
  14. Sure, and sometimes the player to be named later goes on to be a 5-time All Star.
  15. Remember, this was Ken Rosenthal’s reporting of the Brewers-Orioles negotiations in 2018: It would’ve been so exciting for the Brewers to acquire Machado back in 2018, but imagine if they would’ve met the Orioles reported demands and given up Burnes. Sometimes the less exciting move proves to be the right move.
  16. From Washington Post reporter Chelsea Janes: Nationals are getting a lot of interest in Trea Turner, according to person familiar. Sounds like they haven’t ruled out dealing him, but would need to be presented with a total no-brainer of a deal. I wonder if the Reds would be a team that could use some of their prospect depth to piece together a big package for Turner.
  17. I wonder if the Brewers would indeed ask him to play some in the outfield. Sort of fascinated to see how they would utilize him.
  18. From Robert Murray: Donaldson is one of the names the Brewers are considering. As reported this morning, they are exploring third base upgrades in addition to first base and bullpen help. No stones being left unturned.
  19. Another notable nugget tucked near the end of that Robert Murray article… I could see Berrios and his 1.5 years of team control netting a pretty good return for the Twins.
  20. Robert Murray does seemingly have very good sources inside the Brewers front office, so I trust the quote. Between this quote, and last week David Stearns giving what seemed like a slightly defensive answer to McCalvy when asked about adding a “big name player” (Link) it sure does seem like the front office is preparing to take a big swing at this deadline if presented the opportunity. It’s going to be a fascinating to see what this team looks like by next weekend.
  21. Assume LaRussa bringing Hendricks in for 2 innings here? Maybe not with Crochet still available.
  22. Who doesn’t want them to acquire a big bat? Is it possible you’re confusing what people “don’t want” with those that are remaining realistic about what might actually be possible.
  23. Feel like a great opportunity here to break through and tie this game.
  24. According to Dennis Lin: The Padres plan to use Adam Frazier in a super-utility role. He has mostly played second base but also has experience at all three outfield positions. From Ken Rosenthal: Mariners also made offer for Adam Frazier and did not ask Pirates to put cash in deal, sources tell The Athletic. Pirates sent $1.4M to Padres in part because they value Marcano highly. If he evolves into Frazier type, Pirates get six years of him for 1-plus of Frazier.
