  1. Slightly surprised Hiura is in the starting lineup today just because I’d put the odds of him catching up to a deGrom fastball in the upper half of the zone at an extremely low probability.
  2. Maybe I was wrong about his defense at 1B. The numbers didn’t look stellar on FanGraphs, but according to the Blue Jays beat reporter for The Athletic, Kaitlyn McGrath, Tellez is solid there… ”If Tellez can regain the consistency he found in 2020, the Brewers are getting a defensively solid first baseman with definite pop from the left side. And after getting squeezed out of Toronto’s plans, a change of scenery in the National League could be what Tellez needs to regain his power stroke.”
  3. Burnes and deGrom facing off in a 7-inning game is extra fascinating in that the bullpens may factor into it very little. If there was ever a game to find a way to scratch across a run first, it’s probably this one.
  4. One of the co-writers of the FanGraphs piece, Kevin Goldstein, mentioned that the blurbs about where teams preferences are leaning was much more important than than the specific player mocked to a given team. In the Brewers case they seem to believe they are targeting college pitching with their early picks, but which players are available will obviously be based on how the board falls. I personally am not that enamored with the college pitching expected to be available in the middle of the round, so I won’t be too upset if the FanGraphs belief that they are lining up for college pitchers proves incorrect.

  6. Below are some quotes from David Stearns about the trade. On Rowdy Tellez: “This is a player who has consistently put the bat on the ball and he’s consistently hit the ball hard. Those are two pretty good attributes for major-league hitters. He’s had success in the major leagues. He’s had a long track record of success in the minor leagues. He got off to a little bit of a slow start this year at the major-league level, but we think the underlying ingredients are pretty sound. We think he should be able to perform at the major-league level.” On bullpen depth: “We’re probably nearing the edge of our depth a little bit and I’m cognizant of that, but in order to make trades like this, where two contending clubs make a deal, we often have to give something up off our major-league club, and we’ve now made two of those.”
  7. Sort of amazing the number of players the Brewers have recently acquired that had previously been with the Blue Jays… Justin Smoak, Travis Shaw, Billy McKinney, Derek Fisher, Daniel Vogelbach and Luke Maile. We can add Rowdy Tellez to the list.
  8. The Reds were winning 6-1 entering the bottom of the 8th inning. They lost 7-6.
  9. Mets owner Cohen with another update: Hang in there everybody , we are going to play tonight Just spoke to Sandy
  10. From Mets owner Steven Cohen on Twitter… Looks like weather delays but they are going to try and get the game in Weather looks great at 11 pm Looks like weather will improve between 8-9pm Reminder the times mentioned are referring to the Eastern Time Zone.
  11. From Will Sammon: Rowdy Tellez is expected be here in New York tomorrow with Brewers.
  12. Just a friendly reminder that the Brewers have no incoming corner infield help to speak of in their farm system and these have been their opening day first baseman since Prince Fielder left… 2012: Mat Gamel 2013: Alex Gonzalez 2014: Lyle Overbay 2015: Adam Lind 2016: Chris Carter 2017: Eric Thames 2018: Ryan Braun 2019: Jesus Aguilar 2020: Justin Smoak 2021: Keston Hiura Rowdy Tellez provides another possibility at coming up with both a short-term and potentially long-term solution at the first base position.
  13. Yeah, I remembered mentioning Tellez at one point so I went and looked it up but then realized it was as part of the discussion about possible Hader trade returns… so I probably won’t be bumping that one.
  14. I’m not sure if Tellez will prove the long term 1B answer in Milwaukee, but I am certain I’d rather give him a shot (especially knowing he has 3.5 remaining years of control) than 31-year old free agent to be C.J. Cron.
  15. More from Ken Rosenthal: Expect Brewers to remain active. Willingness to trade Richards, who struck out 25 but also walked 9 and allowed 3 HRs in 19 2/3 IP with MIL, indicates team will seek additional bullpen help at deadline. Previously moved Feyereisen/Rasmussen to get Adames/Richards.
  16. Had to chuckle at the opening line from a Jays Journal article published yesterday titled, Blue Jays: Could Rowdy Tellez be on the trade block this summer?: Garnering fan favourite status similar to former Blue Jays infielder Justin Smoak, Tellez burst onto the big league scene three years ago as a September call-up and produced fantastic results in a short sample. Through 23 games, the hard-hitting lefty batter slashed .314/.329/.614 with nine doubles, four home runs, and 14 RBI through 70 at-bats. Since his debut back in late 2018, Tellez has accumulated a career .241/.301/.458 slash line with 37 home runs, 99 RBI, and a .759 OPS. Should be another fun personality in the clubhouse.
  17. I’m okay with a deal that takes a shot on a 26-year old with massive raw power, but a little concerned that he appears to be poor defensively at 1B.
  18. Per Ken Rosenthal: Brewers acquiring 1B Rowdy Tellez from Blue Jays, sources tell @TheAthletic. Return believed to include RHP Trevor Richards. Unclear if other pieces are in deal. Tellez has been in Triple A since June 22. Richards came from Rays in Adames trade. Per Jeff Passan: First baseman Rowdy Tellez is headed to the Brewers, as @Ken_Rosenthal said. Didn’t have a spot in Toronto. Jays need relief, and right-hander Trevor Richards, sources said, is going to Toronto. He’s now been dealt twice in the last six weeks. EDIT: Brewers also included RHP Bowden Francis in the deal.
  19. This Ken Rosenthal article for The Athletic has some good insight and quotes from Willy Adames including the hitting instructor that Adames used at the suggestion of Mookie Betts… Rosenthal: What Mookie Betts told Willy Adames

  21. That seemed like a pitch Jace should’ve been able to get the bat on.
  22. I’m not sure I’d give Diaz a free out. His command seems lacking at the moment.
